When I said that the Ronald McDonald House Charities is a great organization, I was speaking from experience. My third, Iris, has something that needed to be checked out and we were able to stay the night here in one of the Portland houses. It’s been my eldest daughter for years being seen at OHSU and for whom these visits are, so this was almost weird. The hospitality is always spot on and the kids are able to have a good time. I find it pretty sweet that I get to stay the night here at the Ronald McDonald House and then tomorrow I get my packet for the race I used as a fundraising opportunity for them on Sunday! Oh yeah, this also means we get to ride on the tram! Special neurons 🧠 have been created from stem cells and used to stop seizures from happening! 🤯 In this week’s podcast 🎧📹, epileptologist and neuroscientist David Spencer 👨🏻‍⚕️👨🏻‍🔬 tells us about this amazing research which is now in its first trial phase in humans and looking safe and effective so far!! First of all they use stem cells (a type of basic cell which can turn into almost any other type of cell) and turn them into special neurons. They then implant the neurons into the specific area of the brain where our seizures start. Then, voila!! The implanted neuron stops the other neurons from starting the seizures! If this treatment proves to be safe (which it is so far) then it could be used in way more people as an alternative to having bits of their brain removed (a resection) 🧠🔪or having bits destroyed (laser ablation) 🧠🔪. In addition to setting a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title as the largest cut tanzanite at 703-carats, my L’Heure Bleu carving has received several other accolades. It won a first place American Gem Trade Association Spectrum Award for carving. L’Heure Bleu is featured in the book “Tanzanite — Born From Lightning”, by Hayley Henning and Didier Brodbeck. The carving is also showcased in the book “Minerals & Gemstones of East Africa”, by Brian Cairncross. It was on display at the Wilensky Gallery in New York City twice, once in my solo show “Stone in Motion” and later in a group show, “Gemstone Masterpieces”. L’Heure Bleu was exhibited in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History as part of the Gem Artists of North America show at the Wentz Gallery Gems and Jewelry, Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems. It was part of the exhibition of my work, “Exploring the Complex Curve” at the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks & Minerals in Hillsboro, Oregon. The carving was the focus of a televised interview on “Worldwide Business with Kathy Ireland”. L’Heure Bleu has also been featured in numerous magazine articles in the United States, Europe and Asia. L’Heure Bleu is for sale and all profits from its sale will be donated to the world renowned Casey Eye Institute to provide eyecare for the Maasai, whose ancestral lands are the location of the tanzanite mines in Tanzania. Five activists, including campus rep project manager, Sirrus, shed light on OHSU’s horrific OB/GYN drills that have killed 48 pigs. Activists held an impactful counter-protest during a demonstration led by Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, vice chair of research, obstetrics, and gynecology at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine ✊🔥 They exposed OHSU’s cruel tests on pigs and urged the school to stop using live-animals for their trainings and use human-relevant simulators instead!

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Did you know? • In the US, healthcare contributes to about 10% of carbon emissions. • One MRI scan produces carbon emissions equivalent to driving 90 miles in a new car. • Climate change affects human health, especially in vulnerable and disadvantaged groups. Here are some of the ways Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology is taking action against climate change: ✨ Workstation Energy Reduction Pilot Project ✨ The Workstation Energy Reduction Pilot Project, led by Chara Rydzak, M.D., and Mehtab Sal, M.D., was initiated in 2024. The project aims to reduce energy consumption by tracking workstation energy usage and implementing automatic shut-offs for inactive workstations after a one-month trial period. ✨ Gadolinium Reduction ✨ MRI contrast agents are substances that are used to improve the visibility of internal body structures in MRI. Clariscan and Gadopiclenol are two brand names for gadolinium-based contrast agents. We're transitioning from Clariscan to Gadopiclenol for most MRI scans. By making this switch, OHSU will cut gadolinium released into the environment by half, as Gadopiclenol is administered at 0.05 mmol/kg compared to Clariscan's 0.1 mmol/kg. This reduction is a positive step towards minimizing the environmental impact of this heavy metal. ✨ Lights Out Oregon ✨ In support of safe bird migration during peak season (April 15 - May 19), we're participating in Lights Out Oregon. This involves turning off office lights and closing blinds before leaving work to reduce unnecessary lighting that could disrupt bird migration patterns. ✨ Alternate Commutes ✨ Many of our staff use diverse transportation options to commute, which can significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Using public transportation, biking, walking, or carpooling reduces the overall reliance on fossil fuels and promotes cleaner air quality. OHSU offers support and incentives for alternate commuters. “We created the organization in Daniel’s memory, so that other parents would have an easier time going through what we did.” After Stephanie and Duncan Christiansen took their son, Daniel, to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for cancer treatment, they saw what a difference that games, good food and financial assistance make to the families there. 💛 Stephanie was also treated at Doernbecher for cancer when she was a teenager. After Daniel passed away in 2014, his family founded Daniel’s 2nd Chance with the goal of helping others at the hospital.
