2024, Day 128 (May 7) Sting, DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES Always been a fan of Sting. It was interesting to hear how The Police evolved over just a five album span and then, for his debut solo album, he goes off in a jazzy direction. THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES was a commercial success and was nominated for multiple Grammys. He had worked with some other producers and recorded some songs but chose to go in a new direction. He had some excellent jazz musicians, such as Omar Hakim, Daryl Jones, Kenny Kirkland, and Branford Marsalis. The Music Video to “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits This song features lyrics that were written from the point of view of two working-class men watching music videos and commenting on what they see. For this song, Mark specifically modeled his guitar sound on ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons’ trademark guitar tone, as ZZ Top’s music videos were already a staple of early MTV. In an interview, Billy told Timothy White of Musician in late 1985 that Knopfler had solicited Gibbons’ help in replicating the tone, adding, “He didn’t do a half-bad job, either, considering that I never told him a goddamned thing!” From a musical perspective, the song contains a recognizable hook, which appears in the form of a guitar riff that’s inspired by John Lee Hooker and it introduces the song. As the song continues, the riff doesn’t fade away, it continues throughout the song, played in permutation during the verses, and played in full after each chorus. The song also features a contribution by Sting, which appears in the form of the “I want my MTV” line, which followed the melody from his song “Don’t Stand So Close to Me”. As per the classic rock magazine’s feature on the song here’s what bassist John Illsey had to say about this: “Sting used to come to Montserrat to go windsurfing and he came up for supper at the studio. We played him ‘Money for Nothing’ and he turned round and said, ‘You’ve done it this time, you bastards.’ Mark said if he thought it was so good, why didn’t he go and add something to it.
