When Eric Clapton first heard the Band, he knew he was done with Cream. “I’m in the wrong place with the wrong people doing the wrong thing,” the guitarist later recalled thinking, and he wasn’t the only one left stunned by the group’s laid-back revolution. Synthesizing R&B, country, blues and early rock with chops seasoned by years on the road with Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, Canadians Robbie Robertson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, along with their Arkansas-born drummer-singer Levon Helm — once collectively known as the Hawks, and, later on, the Crackers — made everything old-timey, rural and ramshackle seem profoundly cool. For the next eight years, they would craft some of rock’s earthiest, grooviest and most yearning sounds. “We were rebelling against the rebellion,” Robbie Robertson said years later of the group’s defiantly wholesome outlook circa their debut LP, summed up by their decision to pose with their extended family members on the album’s inside sleeve. 4/29 - our day off of #wildhoneycollectivetour was spent paying our respects to @the_band_official_ and #levonhelm and #rickdanko as we made our pilgrimage to #woodstock on a beautifully gray day in the Catskills. We left Trenton and our great friends in the afternoon and got out to the country (but still made a stop at a @wawa , don’t worry) with an impeccable soundtrack of @exocytoticrelease mixes of The Band. Our music geek asses managed to be cranking @bobdylan and The Band collaborations as we pulled into Woodstock and made our way to the cemetery with the post-rain mists rising movie-perfect from the surrounding hills. Tasteful tributes mark the gravestones of this great rhythm section, including Arkansas and Canadian flags to celebrate the lives of these great players that are now both part of the hills where they created magic. To continue breathing this air we got an Airbnb in nearby Saugerties and found The Pig Bar, a great spot to have dinner and meet some locals. We’re rested and ready to hit the road to Boston where shows pick back up tonight at @thesilhouetteallston and hopefully we’ll bring a little bit of Levon and Rick’s spirits with us!
