2024, Day 118 (April 27) Bruce Springsteen, TUNNEL OF LOVE I grew up listening to The Boss but the first album that I purchased of his was NEBRASKA, which seemed an odd one to start with because it was the first one without the E Street Band. But, things would only explode for him once BORN IN THE USA was released a couple years later. Up to this point he always seemed to receive very good critical reviews, and all his albums up to this point deserve it. The commercial success that followed BORN IN THE USA and the LIVE/1975-1985 shot him to the stratosphere. I am probably in the minority in feeling a little more partial to TUNNEL OF LOVE, which came out in 1987. I think that it showed a shift in his songwriting after getting married for the first time and he wrote some great relationship songs from a more adult and settled down point of view. #brucespringsteen #tunneloflove #aintgotyou #tougherthantherest #allthatheavenwillallow #spareparts #cautiousman #walklikeaman #tunneloflove #twofaces #brilliantdisguise #onestepup #whenyourealone #valentinesday #1987 #rock #rickandroll #theboss #365daysofmusic …only 248 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 2018 Godsmack released When Legends Rise. These guys have been a hard Rock staple for 25 years. I still remember lifting in highschool to Voodoo and now these days to Surrender. It sounds like their latest album is the last so it's likely end of an era. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #godsmack

2024, Day 116 (April 25) Joe Satriani, SURFING WITH THE ALIEN Preparing for the show tonight with Satriani’s SURFING WITH THE ALIEN. It was the album that not only introduced me to his music but that of many other guitarists, like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Greg Howe, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, and so many other since. This is his classic all-out guitar driven album that took off for him. On this day in 2000 Papa Roach released Infest. As peak teenager in 2000, nu metal struck a chord with me and Papa Roach was one of the best at the time. I remember seeing them for the first time at I believe was a River Riot concert and Jacoby Shaddix energy on stage was on another level. Every time I've seen them he's always given 100% of himself to the performance. One of the best live bands I've seen over the years. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #paparoach

On this day in 2015 Everclear released Black is the New Black. Everclear has always been a middle and highschool band for me. So Much for the Afterglow CD played on repeat during those years and is easily their best. I lost track of them through college and beyond. It wasn't until they pushed the nostalgia starting with their Summerland tour. The 20-teens renewed my passion for bands like Everclear and extended their careers considerably. This release is a good example of coming back to a band I had spent a decade away from and was impressed they still had it. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #everclear

2024, Day 114 (April 23) Queen, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA I was always fascinated how the members of Queen tended to write separately from one another. I can’t think of another band as successful as they were that made music that way. There’s no questioning that success. From 1974 to 1977 they had one of the best four album runs in rock music: SHEER HEART ATTACK, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, A DAY AT THE RACES, and NEWS OF THE WORLD. Absolutely amazing albums, with A NIGHT AT THE OPERA being the crown jewel. Yeah, it’s the one with “Bohemian Rhapsody…but it’s so much more than that. #queen #anightattheopera #deathontwolegs #lazingonasundayafternoon #iminlovewithmycar #youremybestfriend #39 #sweetlady #seasiderendezvous #theprophetssong #loveofmylife #goodcompany #bohemianrhapsody #godsavethequeen #1975 #progressiverock #prog #progrock #poprock #hardrock #avantrock #365daysofmusic …only 252 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 1976 the Ramones released their self titled album. The Mount Rushmore of punk rock. Almost everything I listen to today is because of these guys. All my favorite punk rock, metal, grunge rock, garage rock, and even pop and hip hop bands were influence by the Ramones. That fast 2-3 minute song structure is perfect and my preferred music to workout to. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #ramones

2024, Day 113 (April 22) Utopia, DEFACE THE MUSIC They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that is the case, then Utopia’s fifth studio album is a perfect tribute to The Beatles. Released in 1980 but it really doesn’t seem like it. It feels like it could be from the 60s. This is more than a tribute, though. They wanted to sound like The Beatles. You can hear so many classics from the Fab Four, such as “Day Tripper,” “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I Am The Walrus,” “Strawberry Fields Forever,” and many more. Apparently, one of the songs was intended to be a part of a movie soundtrack. However, the producers refused it because they were afraid that legal action would be taken against them because it was so similar to The Beatles. Of course, Todd Rundgren has never been one to stand still for very long. This is a fun album. I particularly like “Everybody Else Is Wrong,” “Take It Home,” and “I Just Want to Touch You.” #utopia #defacethemusic #ijustwantotouchyou #crystalball #wheredoestheworldgotohide #sillyboy #alone #thatsnotright #takeithome #hoipoloi #lifegoeson #feeltoogood #alwayslate #allsmiles #everybodyelseiswrong #1980 #poprock #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #thebeatles #daytripper #iwannaholdyourhand #eleanorrigby #cantbuymelove #iamthewalrus #strawberryfieldsforever #toddrundgren #365daysofmusic …only 253 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 2000 Grasshopper Takeover released International Dance Marathon. Easily one of my favorite bands in highschool. Local band in Omaha that just never made it bigger than known in the Midwest. I still remember them opening for my first true rock concert and then playing at the Omaha 150th celebration. 2024, Day 112 (April 21) Weird Al Yankovic, UHF: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK I think that a case needs to be made to get Weird Al Yankovic into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He made a career out of writing what most would just consider novelty songs. He should have been a one-hit wonder and a footnote in Billboard magazine. In 1989, he would venture into motion pictures, writing and starring in UHF, the story of a shiftless dreamer who manages a low-budget television station and begins to find an audience with his unconventional programming choices. The film probably hurt his career more than anything, though, and I have to admit that it is a bit of a guilty pleasure movie for me, one that I cannot resist watching whenever it comes on. He would spend a few years recovering from this financial disappointment. He has not released any new albums since 2014, focusing on other projects and using his YouTube channel to continue to stay in touch with his fans. My favorite Weird Al story comes from early in his career, when things were beginning to take off and he had a great deal of success with his first few videos. He had been invited to a big Hollywood party, which he was reluctant to go to because he figured that no one would know him. However, soon after he walked in he heard a voice shout, “Holy shit, it’s Weird Al!” When he turned to see who said it, he discovered it was Paul McCartney. God, I hope that is actually a true story. weirdalyankovic #uhf #originalmotionpicturesoundtrack #moneyfornothingbeverlyhillbillies #gandhiii #attackoftheradioactivehamstersfromaplanetnearmars #islething #thehotrockspolka #uhf #letmebeyourhog #shedriveslikecrazy #genericblues #spatulacity #funzone #spam #thebiggestballoftwineinminnesota #1989 #comedy #polka #parody #geekrock #songwritershalloffame #drdemento #theknack #mysharona #mybologna #dougfieger #paulmccartney #365daysofmusic …only 254 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 111 (April 20) Queensryche, PROMISED LAND Queensryche, one of the pioneering American progressive metal bands, hit a high peak in 1988 when they put out their masterpiece, OPERATION: MINDCRIME. It is still one of my favorite albums of all time. They followed that up with the superb EMPIRE a couple years later. That became a huge commercial success, thanks, in part, to the single “Silent Lucidity.” In 1994, they would release PROMISED LAND, an almost forgotten gem, as it would be one of the last two albums to feature the original five members. It didn’t seem to get the attention that I would have thought it would have after their prior success. It was another (loose) concept album, focusing on mental health and loss, kind of like a combination of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON and WISH YOU WERE HERE. Personally, I thought there were some very good tracks on this, comparable to EMPIRE, such as “I Am I,” “Damaged,” “Disconnected,” “Bridge,” “Someone Else?” and the title track. Unfortunately, this is where things started to fall apart a bit. Guitarist/songwriter Chris DeGarmo would leave the band in a few years, shortly after their record company went bankrupt and the band would have to finance the rest of their tour. Relationships within the other member would become strained and a split occurred, with lawsuit to follow. #queensryche #promisedland #928am #iami #damaged #outofmind #bridge #promisedland #disconnected #ladyjane #myglobalmind #onemoretime #someoneelse #1994 #progressive #progressiverock #progressivemetal #hardrock #heavymetal #operationmindcrime #silentlucidity #empire #darksideofthemoon #wishyouwerehere #365daysofmusic …only 255 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 1993 Primus released Pork Soda. Hard to disagree with Les Claypool that Primus is far from mainstream and is an acquired taste like pork soda, but man he's easily one of the coolest and best bass players ever. 2024, Day 110 (April 19) Van Halen, FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE I am unapologetically a fan of Van Hagar. I think when Sammy was in the band they became a solid, hard-rocking force once again. David Lee Roth was becoming too much of a showman for me, though there’s no denying he was good at that. FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE was the third VH album with Sammy, and it may have been the safest one. 5150 made a statement, and OU812 backed that up with swagger. This one was much more straight ahead rocker, though it seemed to be a difficult one to make for the band. Well, I think that the results were quite good. I love “Poundcake,” “Runaround,” and “Top of the World,” and the single “Right Now” is a great one, too. I’ve been listening to Mammoth WVH’s albums a lot this year so I thought it was time to listen to his Pop. #vanhalen #forunlawfulcarnalknowledge #poundcake #judgementday #spanked #runaround #pleasuredome #manonamission #thedreamisover #rightnow #316 #topoftheworld #1991 #hardrock #vanhagar #sammyhagar #davidleeroth #5150 #ou812 #365daysofmusic …only 256 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 2019 Lizzo released Cuz I Love You. It's been since Lauryn Hill that I feel an artist has blended such soulful singing with hip hop rap. She is easily the most popular flutist I know besides Ron Burgundy. 024, Day 109 (April 18) Violent Femmes, VIOLENT FEMMES Apparently, the only thing that brought Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie, and Victor DeLorenzo together was music. They didn’t seem to have much more to keep them together. When the began playing music in Milwaukee, they were doing it on the streets because no one seemed to take them seriously. However, it was there on the streets that they were discovered by James Honeyman-Scott of The Pretenders when they were in town to do a show. Their debut, self-titled album would become an absolute classic of post-punk, alternative music of the 1980s, often cited as one of the best of the decade. Tracks like “Blister In The Sun,” “Kiss Off,” “Add It Up,” and “Gone Daddy Gone” were ones that really struck a chord with teenagers. However, they never could achieve greater standing, when compared to likes of other artists during that period, like The Replacements, R.E.M., or Pixies. Much like those artists, they had a distinct voice and sound that still makes a connection today. #violentfemmes #blisterinthesun #kissoff #pleasedonotgo #additup #confessions #provemylove #promise #tothekill #gonedaddygone #goodfeeling #ugly #gimmethecar #1983 #postpunk #alternativerock #folkpunk #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #365daysofmusic …only 257 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 107 (April 16) Genesis, ABACAB Not the album that I thought I would be listening to this evening. It just snuck up on me, I guess. While ABACAB is not my favorite Genesis album, it has many tracks that I do love. “Man On The Corner” is one of my favorite Genesis tunes, and I really like “Dodo/Lurker,” “Keep It Dark,” and the title track, though I can’t say I know what it’s about. This album for me draws a line for the band in their discography. This didn’t have Peter Gabriel - he had left years prior to this - but I think that there is still a lot of nice prog elements that cause some of those fans of the hits that would follow to not fully appreciate it. For me, they never fully lost their prog roots but this was an album that didn’t seem as much to be geared to be more commercial on purpose. I know many would disagree with that assessment but that is what I think. For whatever that is worth. #genesis #abacab #noreplyatall #meandsarahjane #keepitdark #dodolurker #whodunnit #manonthecorner #likeitornot #anotherrecord #1981 #prog #progrock #progressive #progressiverock #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #365daysofmusic …only 259 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 106 (April 15) Joe Jackson, LOOK SHARP Joe Jackson started recording some demos in 1977-1978 and got him signed to A&M Records. He was looking for a spontaneous feel to the songs, which were influenced by reggae music. Many of the tracks were first takes, with no overdubs, to contribute to a more live sound. It is comparable in style to what Elvis Costello was doing at the time. “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” was the first single released, though I don’t think it caught on at first in the UK or the US. Other singles, “Sunday Papers” and “One More TIme” were also put out but they kind of stalled on the charts. Overall, the album has had mostly favorable reviews, though Jackson himself has said, on occasion, that there are tracks on here that he would not hold up as his best work. #joejackson #looksharp #onemoretime #sundaypapers #isshereallygoingoutwithhim #happylovingcouples #throwitaway #babystickaround #looksharp! #foolsinlove #dotheinstantmash #prettygirls #gotthetime #dontaskme yougotthefever #1979 #newwave #pubrock #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #365daysofmusic …only 260 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 105 (April 14) George Harrison, SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND As a record company, how do you reject an album by a former member of the biggest band on the planet? Hadn’t anyone learned from that crazy mistake made by Decca Records back in 1962 when they rejected The Beatles? Sure, not every album from one of the Fab Four were bonafide platinum sellers, but still… After George Harrison recorded new material during 1980 and presented the tracks to Warner Brothers, they rejected them, saying that it was too laid back and not commercial enough. He decided he would rework what he had and eventually changed up the track list, adding a few that he hadn’t played for WB before. One of the new tracks was intended to be recorded with Ringo Starr for one of his projects but felt he couldn’t sing in the higher key in which it was written. After the murder of John Lennon in December 1980, Harrison would rewrite the lyrics and the song would become “All Those Years Ago.” That would become the first single, and it performed well ( #13 in the UK and #2 in the US) but the album as a whole would quickly stall. I don’t think that the other single released, “Teardrops,” even cracked the Top 100. Still, the album is enjoyable. I like “Writing’s On The Wall,” “Save The World,” and “Blood From A Clone,” which was a criticism of the executives that rejected his initial album. #georgeharrison #somewhereinengland #bloodfromaclone #unconsciousnessrules #lifeitself #allthoseyearsago #baltimoreoriole #teardrops #thatwhichihavelost #writingsonthewall #hongkongblues #savetheworld #1981 #rock #rockmusic #poprock #thebeatles #365daysofmusic …only 261 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 103 (April 12) Jeff Lynne, ARMCHAIR THEATRE This evening’s selection is Jeff Lynne’s ARMCHAIR THEATRE. I remember listening to this one a lot when it came out in 1990. He put his mark on so many projects back then, as a producer, such as George Harrison’s CLOUD NINE, Tom Petty’s FULL MOON FEVER, Roy Orbison’s MYSTERY GIRL, The Traveling Wilburys’ two albums, plus so many others. It was nice that he was able to release this solo gem in the middle of everything else. I think two singles were released, “Lift Me Up” and “Every Little Thing,” which were excellent ones to put out, but I also love “Nobody Home,” “Now You’re Gone,” and “Save Me Now.” Having grown up listening to ELO’s A NEW WORLD RECORD and OUT OF THE BLUE I got a kick listening to all these other projects he was involved in. 2024, Day 102 (April 11) Bill Conti, ROCKY: ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SCORE Sometimes when you’re fighting through something in life, all you hope for is the strength to get through it. You know that the odds are against you as far as coming up a winner, so you just pray that you can go the distance. Bill Conti was responsible for one of the most iconic film scores of all time. The music he did for ROCKY in 1976 has had an amazing impact on popular culture. When someone hears just a short bit of that theme, “Gonna Fly Now,” it automatically fires up the fighter in them. It’s just such an inspiring soundtrack. That is exactly what I need now. On this day in 1995 White Zombie released Astro-Creep: 2000. More Human than Human was my first exposure to Rob's work and it still my favorite song. I've always been drawn to his movies as well. He is such a an interesting person. He has this larger than life, horror inspired public persona but lives a very quiet, clean, and reserved private life. I've always moved forward with his music from Astro-Creep, but recently took time to move backwards. A bit too out there for me but I can see why Kurt Cobain was influenced by them. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #whitezombieband

024, Day 101 (April 10) House of Large Sizes, HEAT MISER Keeping things close to home with a (somewhat) local band, House of Large Sizes. They began in Cedar Falls, IA and had a loyal following around the Midwest. Singer/guitarist Dave Diebler and bassist/vocalist Barb Schiff were the only two constant members of what was always a trio. They played some kick-ass alternative rock and got signed to a major label. 024, Day 99 (April 8) Del Amitri, WAKING HOURS Listening to one I haven’t heard in a while. Back in 1989, Del Amitri released their brilliant WAKING HOURS. The album is a great mix of guitar pop, alternative, and a healthy dose of their Scottish roots. It fit in well with the musical landscape, whether you were into R.E.M. and The Feelies, or The Smiths, or even Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett. Though this one wasn’t their official debut many consider it to be simply because they spent a lot of time absorbing a lot of influence before coming back with a new sound. Vocalist and bassist Justin Currie recently had an interview with the BBC where he discussed his diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. He talked about how he has to concentrate on things that he never used to as far as performing and he knows that things will only get worse, he just has no way to know how quickly. He said: “That ridiculous cliche, ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’, that’s not true.” WAKING HOURS is great from start to finish, with classics like “Kissing This Thing Goodbye,” “Hatful of Rain,” Move Away Jimmy Blue,” “Stone Cold Sober,” and “Nothing Ever Happens.” I’m glad that I chose this one tonight. “And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The needle returns to the start of the song And we will all sing along like before And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all The burn down the synagogues at six o’clocks And we’ll all go along like before And we’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.” #delamitri #wakinghours #kissthisthinggoodbye #oppositeview #moveawayjimmyblue #stonecoldsober #youregone #wheniwantyou #thissideofthemorning #empty #hatfulofrain #nothingeverhappens #1989 #alternativerock #rockmusic #rockandroll #poprock #janglepop #rootsrock #folkrock #365daysofmusic …only 267 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 1997 Third Eye Blind released their self titled album. The whole first half of this album is basically the greatest hits of their career. The lyrics are more intense than the jovial melodies, it's always been a wild juxtaposition. Lead singer Stephan Jenkins must have pissed in a lot of fellow rockers Cheerios, as he is one of the most hated to tour with by multiple sources. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #thirdeyeblind

2024, Day 98 (April 7) Bryan Adams, CUTS LIKE A KNIFE Ah…high school. I hated it, but at least there was good music to get me through it. Such as Bryan Adams’ CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. He really began to show his talent as a songwriter, along with his frequent collaborator, Jim Vallance. One track was even written with Eric Carr. The album peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200 on the strength of “Straight From The Heart,” “This Time,” and the title track, which was one of the most popular videos on MTV in 1983. At the end of 1984, he would release the hugely successful RECKLESS. #bryanadams #cutslikeaknife #theonlyone #takemeback #thistime #straightfromtheheart #cutslikeaknife #imready #whatsitgonnabe #dontleavemelonely #lethimknow #thebestwasyettocome #1983 #rock #arenarock #rockandroll #rockmusic #365daysofmusic …only 268 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 2014 Black Label Society released Catacombs of the Black Vatican. Zakk Wylde is my generations through line to the unholy trinity of metal as Ozzy's guitarist, Ozzy being primarily a reality TV star than rocker for me. Again that southern rock groove metal is what I am always drawn to. While some argue Zakk isn't great enough to be one of the elite metal guitarist, you can't deny his ambassador role in metal in the 21st century. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #blacklablesociety

On this day in 1993 Tool released their debut studio album Undertow. My fandom for Tool did not start until Lateralus and my favorite Tool song is still on that album. But as I listen back to their discography these days, Undertow and Aenima are the only albums I can listen through start to finish. Undertow is so raw and the drums aren't as much of a heavy focus. Maynard is a much better singer these days but he just doesn't give the same raw emotion you can hear on this album. They still haven't put out a bad album. Hopefully they stop overthinking each album and just put their art out there. I think part of art is being vulnerable and raw, instead of trying to achieve perfection. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #toolband

On this day in 2013 Volbeat released Outlaw Gentleman & Shady Ladies. Volbeat is the second Danish band I've celebrated after Aqua, ironically the last top 10 album by a Danish band before this one was Aqua Aquarium. I really enjoy this rockabilly groove metal. 2024, Day 95 (April 4) Megadeth, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION “Psycho Circus” was still going through my head this morning as I was at work. However, by the time I left I had the killer riff and thumping bass line from “Symphony of Destruction” take its place. So, tonight it’s Megadeth. Their fifth studio album, COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION, contained that gem, which was inspired by the film The Manchurian Candidate. “Architecture of Aggression,” “Skin O’ My Teeth,” “Sweating Bullets,” and “Foreclosure of a Dream” seemed like a good soundtrack for my day. The album itself was very successful, both critically and commercially, debuting on the Billboard album chart at number two. It was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 1993 Grammy Awards and the album’s title track was awarded the Humane Society’s Genesis Award for raising awareness for animal rights issues. #megadeth #countdowntoextinction #skinomyteeth #symphonyofdestruction #architectureofaggression #foreclosureofadream #sweatingbullets #thiswasmylife #countdowntoextinction #highspeeddirt #psychotron #captivehonour #ashesinyourmouth #1992 #thrashmetal #heavymetal #metal #365daysofmusic …only 271 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 94 (April 3) Kiss, PSYCHO CIRCUS Some days I just never know what I will be listening to that night. However, as I walked out of work this afternoon a little voice in my head was singing, “You’re in the psycho circus...” So, Kiss it is this evening. Their eighteenth (I think) studio album intended to be a reunion of the original four members, their first since DYNASTY - almost 20 years. However, there wasn’t much of a reunion, no cohesive band, and an unfortunate lack of focus. Despite all that, though, there are some good songs. In addition to the title track that found its way into my head, I like the anthemic “I Pledge Allegiance to the State of Rock and Roll,” “Within,” which I think was Gene Simmons’ best contribution to the album, “Raise Your Glasses,” and the rallying cry for what could have been: “You Wanted The Best.” In the end, though, my favorite track is “Into The Void,” a fantastic tune written and sung by Ace Frehley. It doesn’t have the classic status of DESTROYER or LOVE GUN, or the hard rock of their 1992 comeback, REVENGE, but it’s not a bad album to pull out every once in a while. #kiss #psychocircus #within #ipledgeallegiancetothestateofrockandroll #intothevoid #weareone #youwantedthebest #raiseyourglasses #ifinallyfoundmyway #dreamin #journeyof1000years #1998 #hardrock #heavymetal #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #genesimmons #paulstanley #acefrehley #petercriss #365daysofmusic …only 272 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 2015 All Time Low released Future Hearts and then in 2020 they released Wake Up, Sunshine. This is a fun day since it's a double dip. I've seen this band so many times over the past 20 years. It's cool that a pop punk cover band that is named after a New Found Glory lyric made it big in the "warped tour" scene. So Wrong, It's Right will always be one of my favorite pop punk albums. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #alltimelow

On this day in 2001 Rammstein released Mutter. This band is so influential they have their own subgenre, Neue Deutsche Harte. After their worldwide hit Du hast, this album was met with critical acclaim. I believe this will be the only non English speaking album that I will celebrate. A band that is on my bucket list to see live. I've never taken the time to translate the lyrics as I feel it adds to the intensity. I mean chanting 'mutter' sounds way cooler in a metal song than chanting 'mother' #365daysofmusic #albumaday #rammstein

2024, Day 92 (April 1) Simple Minds, STREET FIGHTING YEARS Simple Minds has always been a musical artist that really focuses on the art in their music. They were never one to make concessions in order to score a hit, though they had hit #1 a few years earlier with “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” However, in their defense, they didn’t write that one. They may have reached their artsy heights with their 1989 release, STREET FIGHTING YEARS. It hit #1 on the album charts in four European countries but never really caught on in the US. It seems to be a very serious set of tracks, political, with every song, as vocalist Jim Kerr said, “about conflict” and “the battle to try to remain intact with all this hurricane around us.” It received some really good reviews and some not so good reviews. People seemed to be split on it when it was released. It was too highbrow for the pop singles crowd, still remembering Judd Nelson pumping his fist in the air at the end of The Breakfast Club, and yet dramatic and significant in comparison to contemporaries like U2, whose RATTLE AND HUM album was released about 6 months prior. #simpleminds #streetfightingyears #soulcryingout #walloflove #thisisyourland #takeastepback #kickitin #letitallcomedown #mandeladay #belfastchild #biko #whenspiritsrise #1989 #artrock #newwave #poprock #arenarock #synthpop #dontyouforgetaboutme #thebreakfastclub #365daysofmusic …only 274 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 024, Day 91 (March 31) The Posies, DEAR 23 The Posies formed in Washington in the late 1980s in Washington state. Though they were close to the Seattle grunge scene, and may be mentioned when people discuss the music scene there, they were not a grunge band. Their music was more reminiscent of the artists that came over in the British Invasion of the 1960s, like The Byrds or The Hollies. They picked up some influence from other artists like XTC and Elvis Costello along the way. The duo of Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer recorded some songs with the intention of using them as a way to attract other musicians to form a complete band. However, those recordings would become their first album, FAILURE. Soon after, they added Rick Roberts on bass and Mike Musburger on drums so that they could begin to play live shows. Their second album, DEAR 23, is an amazing album with great power pop harmony, catchy hooks, and intelligent and solid songwriting. One review called it: “a contemporary edge to the mid-`60s British Invasion sound of groups such as the Hollies.” There is not a moment on this album that I don’t enjoy. Every song is perfect from start to finish, and it finishes with “Flood of Sunshine,” which is like power-pop prog. #theposies #dear23 #mybigmouth #goldenblunders #apology #anyotherway #youavoidparties #suddenlymary #helpyourself #mrsgreen #everyonemovesaway #floodofsunshine #1990 #alternativerock #rock #rockandroll #365daysofmusic …only 275 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 90 (March 30) The Tragically Hip, FULLY COMPLETELY “I ponder the endlessness of the stars Ignoring said same of my father Either it’ll move me Or it’ll move right through me Fully, and completely” I don’t know why those lyrics from the title track to The Tragically Hip’s 1992 release stick with me. I can’t say I complete understand the meaning that songwriter Gord Downie may have had, but I find myself always trying to figure out my own interpretation. The whole album is fantastic. “Locked In The Trunk of.a Car” is absolutely haunting and another one of my favorites, along with “Fifty Mission Cap,” “Pigeon Camera,” “Wheat Kings,” and “Looking For a Place to Happen.” The Hip never had anywhere near the commercial success in the US that they had in Canada, though their albums were usually received well on either side of the border. Their songs focused on Canadian history, culture, and perspective on the world, which didn’t seem to translate to American audiences. #thereagicallyhip #fullycompletely #courageforhughmaclennan #lookingforaplacetohappen #atthehundredthmeridian #pigeoncamera #lionized #lockedinthetrunkofacar #wellgotoo #fullycompletely #fiftymissioncap #wheatkings #thewherewithal #eldorado #1992 #thehip #alternativerock #rootsrock #folkrock #365daysofmusic …only 276 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 89 (March 29) Billy Squier, HEAR AND NOW Some say Billy Squier killed his career with the video he made for “Rock Me Tonite.” I beg to differ and put forth 1989’s HEAR AND NOW as proof. As much I enjoyed SIGNS OF LIFE (the album with “Rock Me Tonite”), I think that HEAR AND NOW was his finest collection of songs since his classic DON’T SAY NO. He returned to a more hard rock sound, after experimenting with synths on SIGNS OF LIFE and the more polished production of ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. “Don’t Say You Love Me,” “Stronger,” and “Tied Up” were all quite successful on the Rock singles chart and seemed to bring back those that may have doubted him. Solid guitar driven tunes, with a couple written with Desmond Child. 2024, Day 88 (March 28) Tommy Shaw, GIRLS WITH GUNS Another album from the 1980s that probably didn’t get as much attention as one might have thought was the debut album from Styx’s Tommy Shaw. After deciding he didn’t want to write songs about robots, Shaw left the band unsatisfied with the direction it was going. In 1984, he would release GIRLS WITH GUNS. It was a bit of a departure in comparison to what he had been doing with Styx for the previous decade. Gone was Dennis DeYoung’s familiar keyboard work and the harmonies with DeYoung and James JY Young. Aside from his own vocals and some nice guitar work, Shaw’s debut was not an extension of Styx. This album definitely was him doing his own thing. There was less to connect with what came before it than what came after. I could even see a track like “Heads Up” fitting in nicely with Styx’s current set list. The title would be a #10 hit on rock radio, and the ballad “Lonely School” was put out a couple months later. I also think that “Kiss Me Hello” and “Come In and Explain” are quite good, too. #tommyshaw #girlswithguns #comeinandexplain #lonelyschool #headsup #kissmehello #fadingaway #littlegirlworld #outsideintherain #freetoloveyou #theraceison #1984 #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #poprock #365daysofmusic …only 278 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. On this day in 1973 Led Zeppelin released Houses of the Holy. I have nothing to add to all the great things that have been said about this band. If you were debating a "Mount Rushmore" of vocalist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer, some people would just say Led Zeppelin. Each one is that important to rock music. They had 8 studio albums that were all top 10 selling. They are credited as influence, or covered, or sampled by so many artists. The only fun anecdote I have to add is I find it funny that the title track isn't even on this album. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #ledzeppelin

2024, Day 87 (March 27) The Firm, THE FIRM The Firm was a supergroup that formed in 1984. However, despite having two legendary rockers in vocalist Paul Rodgers and guitarist Jimmy Page, the band never really seemed to take off and get too much attention. The band, which also included bassist Tony Franklin and drummer Chris Slade, released their self-titled debut in 1985. I remember how cool I thought it was that Rodgers and Page would put a project together, and the singles “Radioactive” and “Satisfaction Guaranteed” helped the album out of the gate. But, despite a tour in support of it, and the album reaching #17 on Billboard, they never quite reached the heights that most would have expected. They would follow up this album a year later with MEAN BUSINESS but, after a short tour, that would end up being the end of The Firm. Page and Rodgers continued with other projects - Page hooking up with David Coverdale and, eventually, a reunion with that one other band that he was in, and Rodgers would spend time as frontman for Queen. Slade, most famously, would spend a number of years on the kit as part of AC/DC, but also did a couple albums with Asia. Franklin joined Blue Murder, and worked with David Gilmour, Whitesnake, Kate Bush, and Lou Gramm. #thefirm #closer #makeorbreak #someonetolove #together #radioactive #youvelostthatlovinfeeling #moneycantbuy #satisfactionguaranteed #midnightmoonlight #1984 #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #hardrock #bluesrock #jimmypage #paulrodgers #chrisslade #tonyfranklin #davidcoverdale #queen #acdc #asia #bluemurder #davidgilmour #whitesnake #lougramm #365daysofmusic …only 279 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 85 (March 25) Robbie Robertson, HOW TO BECOME CLAIRVOYANT All songwriters are storytellers but what always struck me about Robbie Robertson is his voice - rough, yet soft like a whisper at the same time, with a real passion within - conveyed the impression that if he didn’t live out what he was singing, he was at least a witness to it. If he wasn’t the main character, he was a part of the supporting cast. Maybe that’s why he had such a good working relationship with director Martin Scorcese. HOW TO BECOME CLAIRVOYANT was his fifth solo album. Its release seemed a little more low key than his self-titled debut. It had been over a decade where he hadn’t put out any solo work before this but he returned once again with a great set. “He Don’t Live Here No More,” “This Is Where I Get Off,” “Straight Down the Line,” and “When The Night Was Young” are some of my favorites. #robbierobertson #howtobecomclairvoyant #straightdowntheline #whenthenightwasyoung #hedontliveherenomore #therightmistake #thisiswhereigetoff #fearoffalling #shesnotmine #madamex #axman #wontbeback #howtobecomeclairvoyant #tangofordjango #2011 #rock #rockandroll #rockmusic #americana #folk #blues #rootsrock #365daysofmusic …only 281 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 84 (March 24) Steve Morse, HIGH TENSION WIRES By the time he released his first solo album, HIGH TENSION WIRES, in 1989, Steve Morse was already well respected as a guitar virtuoso. He began in the early 70s as a founder of the great jazz fusion group, The Dixie Dregs. In the mid-80s he started the Steve Morse Band and joined Kansas for a couple albums. He would eventually become a big part of Deep Purple in the 90s and 00s, then the progressive supergroup Flying Colors. HIGH TENSION WIRES was well received and the musicians that supported him on this were members of the Dregs, but it was a departure from his work they had done as a band and from what he did with the Steve Morse Band. It has a good variety on it, with some fine acoustic work and a bit of shredding, some Celtic and even neo-classical metal. It really shows his versatility. #stevemorse #hightensionwires #ghostwind #theroadhome #countrycolors #highlandwedding #thirdpower #lookingback #leprechaunpromenade #tumeninotes #endlesswaves #modoc #1989 #instumentalrock #guitarhero #guitarvirtuoso #progressiverock #jazzfusion #hardrock #arenarock #365daysofmusic …only 282 days left There is a link in my bio to a playlist of tracks from each of my albums on my 365 Days of Music journey through 2024. 2024, Day 83 (March 23) Jackson Browne, THE PRETENDER Jackson Browne is another legendary, distinctly American songwriter, in the group with Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Tom Petty. All of them wrote from the viewpoint of the everyman, so they were easily relatable. However, I would say that Browne was less of the blue-collar everyman and more of the young, idealistic artist. Of the four, Browne was the one that was part of the California music scene, which seem to come from a lot of college campuses, while the other three came from working class neighborhoods. THE PRETENDER was Browne’s fourth studio album. As was the norm for his albums in the 70s, there is a bunch of familiar names that contributed, including Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, Jeff Porcaro, Roy Bittan, Bill Payne, David Lindley, Lowell George, Albert Lee, Waddy Wachtel, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, J.D. Souther, David Crosby, and Graham Nash. One of the songs, “Here Come Those Tears Again,” was cowritten with the mother of his first wife, who had committed suicide. The album is bookended with its best songs: starting off with “The Fuse” and ending with “The Pretender.” It often has a depressing feel, and it seems as though he may have predicted the rise of the yuppie. Overall, another fantastic album, though “Linda Paloma” would never make it as one of my fifty favorite Jackson Browne tracks. #jacksonbrowne #thepretender #thefuse #yourbrightbabyblues #lindapaloma #herecomthosetearsagain #theonlychild #daddystheme #sleepsdarkandsilentgate #1976 #rock #rockmusic #rockandroll #countryrock #johnmellencamp #tompetty #lelandsklar #russkunkel #jeffporcaro #roybittan #billpayne #davidlindley #lowellgeorge #albertlee #waddywachtel #bonnieraitt #jdsouther #davidcrosby #grahamnash #365daysofmusic …only 283 days left

On this day in 1983 ZZ Top released Eliminator. Some of the coolest dudes in Rock with their iconic beards. These guys had a knack for bringing blues rock to the mainstream and did great with the music television audience in the 80s. #365daysofmusic #albumaday #zztop
