This is the bike that started the fast gravel category. A road bike with room for larger tires. Everything I’ve ever wanted in a bike before this became an industry norm. Equipped with full @shimanogravel GRX Di2 electronic shifting and Ultegra carbon wheels; 50mm deep rear and 36mm deep front with 35mm wide @panaracer_world Gravelking slicks. The @pro_bikegear Stealth Curved Team saddle supports my backside, and a 40cm wide PRO PLT Ergo Carbon bar with a 120mm PRO Vibe stem at the controls. To top my bar setup is a @ridefarr Carbon Aero Bolt-On and a @framesandgear mount to support my @garmincycling GPS and @olight.ca light. It took a lot of trial and error to find a mount that nestled in the Farr Aero Bolt-On. If the bar mounting was only 10mm wider, it would offer more flexibility. But I’m happy with this setup. The complete bike with XTR pedals, @arundelbike bottle cages weighs in at a respectable 18.4lbs. Project Open Up - Finished. Well, until I start playing around with different tires and bike bag setups. It rides excellent; the frame is on the smaller side for me, and that was intentional as I wanted this bike to be as fun as possible. It has reasonably close-range gearing for a 1x12 setup. 11/44 cassette, so I only needed a short cage rear derailleur. Titanium Thomson seat post - for comfort, to not worry about the finish when clamping in the work stand or rubbing marks from saddlebags. Also, titanium and carbon are better friends than alloy, and carbon dislikes clamping. The 3D-printed saddle is also for comfort. The wheels and tires I already owned. Industry 9 gold hubs laced to HED Emporia alloy rims. I assume changing tires will be easier with alloy, and I don't have to stress as much about low pressure and rim damage. SRAM Eagle XX1 chain in copper. The OPEN UP is a nice, simple frame with no internal cabling through the stem or upper head tube. A round steerer tube, and most importantly, I can run a Chris King headset. The grip lock retention device helps eliminate hidden steerer tube damage - fatigue or the dreaded #ringofdeath. The bike should be fun and give a good pleasure of ownership. With mechanical gearing, it is a proper human-powered bike. We have been working on a bikepacking route from Breckenridge, Colorado to Grand Junction, Colorado since the COVID shutdown in 2020. Many parts of the route are standard roads. But, the section from Sunlight Ski Resort to a small ranch town (Collbran) is absolutely unknown. If you know Colorado, you know creating this route is a challenge at best. After numerous route development sessions and discussions, we could not find any precedence. Some told us it may not even be possible to cross from Sunlight to Collbran to Grand Mesa. Others told us it is very remote and rugged. So, a few weeks ago we decided to try our current version of the route including a train ride from Grand Junction to Glenwood Springs. Well, we did it!! 🚴♀️🚴💕 Yes, rugged, wild, and scenic!!! …and absolutely gorgeous!!! We had very little time for photos but we have included a few here. And, yes, Patch got stung by a bee on his lip. 🥴 If you are comfortable in a remote backcountry setting and everything that goes with it, we highly recommend this route. That Notorious Audax Baler is one of the toughest 200km rides on the Audax calendar. There were 36% of the participants that Did Not Finish. It has brutal climbs, technical descents and never ending flats. Then you turn around at the Checkpoint to do it all over again, in reverse.
