IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY, Tāwhirimātea and Tangaroa, gods of the wind and sea were kind and compassionate to us novices on the water, as we learned the whakatauki written by Te Rauparaha; Ka oho te wairua (when the spirit is awakened) Kia matara te tinana (when the body is alert) He aroha, ki te aroha Ka ka te rama (when love is unconditional, enlightenment follows) And enlightened we became, about Porirua City Council's Māori and Pacific Strategies; MAUNGAROA and OLA KAMATAGA, highlighting; HEREA TE TAIAO - 'Our harbour and environment, a key focus to address the impacts of climate change, adaptation, disaster risk, resilience development, and preparation and taiao restoration/regeneration' amongst other priorities, this above all glistened on the water, as another whakatauki proverb flashed before us; 'A fia vave o’o lou va’a, alo na o oe, ae a fia Tuli mamao le taunu’uga, tatou aloalo faatasi. The Clinton State School students had a blast learning about marine debris and data collection from our Harbour Catchment Story presented by the GHHP Team! The year 4 teaching team also loved the day and learning alongside their students 🐢🐠 One of the students commented, ‘What I learnt from the Catchment Story was to make sure we don’t do things that hurt the environment and go into the ocean and hurt the animals, like if you are having a party and you leave most rubbish on the ground because you don’t want to pick it up it can blow into the ocean.’ Another students said, ‘Water gets dirty when people put rubbish in it and then you can’t drink it.’ #ghhp #catchmentstory #ourharbour #healthyharbourhealthyfuture #gladstoneharbour
I'm pleased to see @epa.nsw.gov.au continue their 6 month sampling investigation of the Darcy Road Drain #portkembla. Today I was observing as a community member to help ensure the process is as transparent as possible. We have one month of sampling to go before the results will go into a report that will hopefully explain where heavy metal contamination is coming from. It may also mean we need to look further into what legacy pollution is lurking in the sediment of PK outer harbour - contaminating the environment and waters we swim in.
