The significance of these two garden beds is astronomical to me. To you, it's two empty beds waiting for plants. To me, it's the freedom of getting to look out on the lawn and say "I think I want to make some separate herb gardens for the entrance to the vegetable garden"...and not have to wait ask permission or fight for what I want because I know my husband trusts me and loves me and wants to see me happy. I took my plush waddling self outside and did exactly what I envisioned. D drilled the logs and set the rebar and helped with the grass removal that I was too weak to remove after 2 days of digging and hand tilling. No questions asked, just a little "hey baby can you help me?" and he was more than happy to. He let me have total control, didn't make me doubt myself or tease me that I wouldn't be able to keep up with weeding later when I'm too big or overwhelmed. Neither did he state he wouldn't help me if I did fall behind. I already know he'll be right there ready to lend a hand when I need it or do it himself if he knows it needs done later. I got the wagon out, waddled down the driveway and picked up every stone I wanted to use, brought it back and set it in place. Hand tilled the beds and fertilized them. Then, I sat back and had all these thoughts run through my head while looking at the finished beds. We are ready for Ostara the Spring Equinox at Elementals Magickal Emporium and perfect timing for Mother's Day too🐰🥚💚 Ostara is usually celebrated on 20th/21st March as the Earth becomes warmer and more fertile, as the Goddess is coming into the full power of her Maiden aspect. The promise of greener, warmer, more bountiful times is becoming apparent as buds and blossoms emerge from the trees and shrubs, bees return to begin the pollination cycle, and fields of grass wake up from their winter slumber. Ostara is named after the Goddess Eostar, Eostre or Ostara, a Germanic Goddess of fertility and Spring and where the name Easter came from and indeed the naming of the hormone Eostrogen too. This time is also associated with Persephone as she returns from the Underworld to be reunited with her mother Demeter, Greek Goddess of the grain and harvest. The central theme of this time is rebirth, as nature is renewed by the returning light and warmth and our animal friends are busy mating and birthing their young...and the connection with Mother's Day 💚 The egg is such a potent symbol at this time because it contains all the potential and promise of new life and why we give Easter eggs around this time too. The hare is strongly connected to Ostara as a representative of the Goddess (cue the Easter bunny...). Wishing a happy and bright #imbolc season to all to celebrate ❤️ This pagan festival, marking the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, was celebrated by the ancient Celts as the beginning of Spring, the time when the icy ground would begin to thaw and the first few flowers would push up through the snow, a beacon of hope that the long and difficult Winter would soon come to an end. To symbolize that flame of hope, the making, blessing, gifting, and lightning of candles was a central part of Imbolc rituals. 🕯️ Contrary to other fire festivals later in the year which featured blazing bonfires and raucous celebrations, Imbolc was a quieter, more contemplative time when seeds were started for Spring crops 🪴 and plans were laid for the warmer months to come. This was also the time when livestock were giving birth and the first fresh milk became available, 🥛 offering desperately needed calories to communities that had carefully rationed their food stores over the Winter months. Consequently, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and other dairy products featured heavily in Imbolc feasts. 🧀 While we may not face the same struggles to survive through the Winter as our ancestors did, we can still appreciate taking a quiet moment to be grateful for the blessings that kept us safe through hard times and look to the year ahead, planting seeds of new intentions. My rituals this year featured this beautiful birch candle holder handmade by my dear friends at @curated_cultivated which was gifted to me at Yuletide. Imbolc blessings, friends. I had planned to bake blueberry muffins for breakfast and then a fun little feast for dinner, but I'm not feeling well today. So, here's a photo of some delicious artisan bread I made a while back. You'll find the recipe in my highlights. :) It is overcast here, so I guess the Cailleach slept in. Early spring makes sense since we haven't even had a winter where I live. Lol. Groundhog Day is another holiday rooted in pagan tradition. On February 1st, the Cailleach goes out to gather firewood. If she wishes for a longer winter, she will make the weather sunny for her search. If she oversleeps, the day will be gray and wintery, and she will have less time to gather wood, thus creating a shorter winter season. February 1st to sundown on the 2nd is the Pagan sabbat of Imbolc. It is a time to welcome the first signs of spring and lands about halfway between the winter solstice and spring equinox. One tradition is to make a Brigid's Cross in honor of the goddess Brìghde. When Ireland converted to Christianity, the church allowed them to continue to worship the goddess as Saint Brigid. A Brigid's cross is woven from rushes, reeds, or straw. The goddess Brìghde is the keeper of the sacred flame and guardian of home and hearth. To honor her, purification and cleaning are a way to prepare for the coming spring. (Spring cleaning) No pagan sabbat is complete without food. Breads, grains and vegetables saved from fall (potatoes, onions, misc root vegetables) are traditional foods eaten during the celebration. Whether you celebrate pagan sabbats or just enjoy the history, I invite you to join in any of the traditions associated with Imbolc, St Brigid, and the Cailleach. October 31, Samhain feast and protecting myself against the fae and evil spirits: I went to work dressed as one! 🧚🏻♀️ After visiting the graveyard I baked Irish soda bread for our Samhain feast. Mabon blessings, friends! Today is the autumnal equinox (Northern hemisphere), and the last sabbat of the Wheel of the Year — marking the end of summer and beginning of autumn. The autumn harvest has been celebrated since ancient times, but the sabbat of Mabon didn't really take root until the 1970s. The name comes from a medieval Welsh myth. As a baby, Mabon was kidnapped and taken to a magical otherworld, where he is eventually rescued. (Think Demeter and Persephone from Greek mythology.) It falls close to the time of the original American Thanksgiving, because of that final harvest. To celebrate, a common practice is to go apple picking. Apples are a symbol of second harvest. Some even use them in ritual to give thanks to the gods for their bounty. Since it is a day of equal light and dark, rituals to restore balance and harmony to one's life can be done. And, of course, no sabbat would be complete without feasts and family and friends. Whether you celebrate the sabbat or not, I invite you to enjoy this balanced day. Summer seems to be taking its time around here. So I took my time getting to start and finish this one. There is so much green around the mountains that it might be my new favorite color. This pagan sabbat project has mostly been learning about pagan roots. But like many subjects, the roots have changed. So for this piece I focused on a little of what has been written about Litha and mostly what it has been for me going into summer. Robins, yarrow and aspens have been a few of the most noticeable changes around the mountains. I enjoyed adding hand fasting to this piece as well since it’s something I imagine I will do someday.
