Siento que siempre el cierre de temporada viene acompañada de una gran cosecha de calabazas de guarda que nos acompañarán durante los meses fríos para darle consistencia y aportar saborcito a esos platos que tienen al zapallo como protagonista. En mi huerta siempre he dicho que no me va muy bien con las calabazas, y por eso mismo en octubre/noviembre le regalé muchos almácigos a un tío, que tiene el espacio y la paciencia para cultivarlos, almácigos a cambio de algunos zapallitos para mi, para mi invierno, y esto fue lo que coseché, recuerdo que las variedades de esos almácigos eran: -Butternut Orange -Sucrine du Berry -Pipian de Tuxpan -Juxi Jiang Bin Gua -Musquee de Maroc Ayer fui a buscar esta cosechita y aproveché el lindo lugar para algunas 📸 De las variedades cultivadas sólo venderé semillas de Pipian de Tuxpan porque es de una familia de cucurbita que no se mezcla con el resto de variedades que estaban cultivando, y butternut orange que logré cosechar un par de mi huerta 🙃 #pumpkinharvest

Here they are! My second attempt at growing a giant pumpkin. I'm holding my planned pumpkin, grown from a seed from a pumpkin over 360kg, and this fella made it to... 16kg. The pink pumpkin in front was supposed to be a Kent pumpkin. Clearly I mixed up the seeds from the first big pumpkin that I grew two years ago. That pumpkin was named Penny after @mybackyardharvest who inspired me to try growing a giant. Penny the pumpkin was 19kg, Pinky here weighs... 22kg! My biggest ever pumpkin 🎉 a very happy accident. PUMPKIN & SQUASH HARVESTING Pumpkins and squash can be harvested approx 120 days from transplant, when the skin is hard and the stem is drying off. The stem is also known as the wick. The wick drying off is an indication of maturity because when it dries off there is no more moisture going to the fruit, so the fruit will not continue to grow. The foliage will also be dying off and you should be able to see your crop. Another tip is to use the Thumbnail test - it is ready when it resists puncture by a thumbnail. Remove the pumpkin from the vine, leaving a good wick on. This aids the curing process and treating the wick with care will help to increase the storage life of your pumpkin. Picking your pumpkin up by the wick is not a good idea as it may damage the skin, allowing rot to set in. The bottom of the pumpkin can be susceptible to rot where the fruit sits on the ground so it can be beneficial to place something under the fruit for protection such as a piece of cardboard, lid or the @sustaina_grow wool mulch mats are great for this. Wiping fruit with a cloth soaked in apple cider vinegar or similar to disinfect the skin of the fruit once harvested can also assist with storability. CURING AND STORAGE All pumpkins will improve immensely in flavour and sweetness when left for a minimum of 3 weeks to cure after harvesting. The curing process also allows the skins to harden, thereby enhancing storage times. Pumpkins that have been allowed to mature and cure should last 3-6 months in storage. The storage area should be well ventilated, allowing air to circulate around the fruit. An old wire-wove bed base or an old wire gate off the ground is perfect for storing your pumpkins. Leave them in a single layer. First harvest of the summer pumpkins. Tips for newbies. I let the vines die off to ensure the fruit is ripe and cured, ready for long term storage. Cut the brown stem leaving about 10cm of stalk on the pumpkin. When carrying, don’t be tempted to use the stalk as a handle. If it does break off and the outer skin is compromised, that pumpkin is better to eat, rather than storing long term. My pumpkins from 2023 lasted 10 months in storage (just in the laundry, nothing fancy) so they really are a great food to grow and have available year round.

With my grandpa. (My mother’s father). We visited him in his simple village home in Punjab, every summer and winter holidays. Right up until I was 15. That’s when he died. He was a farmer of very simple means. At a time when daughters were barely put through school and married off at 17 or 18 years of age, be encouraged and supported my mother to do her BA, then a B.ed and then a MA. Three degrees later, at the age of 27, she was finally married off. When us city kids would complain about the stifling heat, one summer, he had saved enough to buy a fridge so we could all have cool drinks. The next year he had organised a cooling system. He was a man of very few words, and very little emotion. But worked in the background to make everyone comfortable. Today, as I harvested my Turk’s turban pumpkins, I thought of my own sweet turbaned grandpa. He would have been very amused to see this city kid living in a little village herself, working in the soil, growing fruits and vegetables. So these pumpkins are my ode to my grandpa.

Todays haul of pumpkins and a few sugar baby watermelons, I have golden nugget, butternut, Kent, and my first Atlantic giant which came in around 10kg. This year has been my first proper summer growing season and attempt at pumpkins on a decent scale. What I have learnt and will modify next year is. Grow them in a whole long garden bed instead of mounds, and fit more plants in. Increase compost and manure inputs. And run drip lines through the beds. Plants responded well to removing early flowers and fruit to let plants establish. Seminole pumpkin harvest! 🎃🎃🎃 We’re renovating and this 3-year old pumpkin vine was growing in the way. Time to harvest! As long as pumpkin is allowed to crawl on the ground, it will clone itself and behave as a perennial in zones 10+.😇😇😇 The vine had rooted in several spots so we were able to leave a portion in ground and cut some rooted sections to propagate. This monster portion is for eating though. (The cart is completely filled). Did you know the vine tastes like celery and the leaves taste like spinach? I diced up everything including the flowers and baby pumpkins, and blanched it for 3 minutes in boiling water. When tasting just the cooked leaves, my son said, “it’s so sweet!” Yes. Surprisingly the leaves have a very subtle sweet quality. I’m so proud of my son for being able to taste something that subtle at 7!! Then, I simmered the blanched pumpkin with tomato sauce, couscous, onion and garlic to make a stew. Everyone cleaned their plates!!! Yay!!!
