Thank you for believing in my dream. This piece was inspired by a reference photo I took on a trip to Blackpool last summer. I looked down from atop the Ferris wheel on the pier and saw the waves swelling and crashing beneath me. For a while I sat and watched them crash and fall over and over, and got thinking. It feels like the whole world has been on a crazy ride these past few years, we’ve had a pandemic, there’s conflict across the world, people’s mental health has suffered, the list goes on - we’ve all had so many crashes to face. But as I sat and watched the water for a while, eventually the tide calmed and righted itself, the waves settled. The colours the reapeating shapes, the hard sharp lines contrasted by the beautiful bougainvillea, meeting up with wires connected to balcony. I want to use these images in new work... but first I need to finish old. My Dust series which was inspired by my trip to Aldeburgh late summer last year, desperately needs attention - next week!! I feel SO overwhelmed and so unbelievably grateful to say that my lil original work Ebb is off to its forever home. This piece has such a special place in my heart. It was part of the @wests41 ‘Emerging Artists’ 2023 Exhibition, my first ever show. ‘Ebb’ aims to capture the notion of transience. Dusty and Peggy seem to have been drying out for weeks. Maybe it's the strange vintage paper I've been using. Who knows. Anyway, if my silly (wonderful) friend @sarah.reid.redrawstudios and I were, as if by magic, turned into plants, Sarah would be Dusty (messy hands and pastel dust) and I'd have to be Peggy due to my large collection of print drying washing lines and clothes pegs as my fancy drying racks fill up way too quickly. Poor old Dusty has almost been reduced to dust, and if anything untoward happens to Sarah, I will feel hideously responsible. But eldest daughter came back for a visit and did LOTS of plant care. Dusty has been repotted and is somewhere more obvious now in the hope that she's less neglected. @bluebellroebuck will have some of my 'plants with names' at @westhoveartstrail for Open Houses starting in May. There are a few at @edenvalleyartisticnetwork in Penrith. I'll have some at @thecheshireprintfair. Some on Etsy, and a lot still kicking around on the floor in my work room as I'm messy. In 2018–2019 I tried to record the colours I remembered seeing during a normal day: walking to school, going to the shop, putting the washing out, changing a bed, driving to work. Ordinary, repetitive day to day activities which we don’t photograph and which we rarely talk about or recall. It's been sat in a box for four years. This weekend past someone asked me about the project. I opened that box and yesterday I took the sample plates I created back in 2018/2019 to Valspar and got them colour matched and mixed. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be to open that box and I didn't cry thinking about all the shit I went through, I was actually just proud of the work. The colours mixed by Valspar are softer but still bold and strong.
