Renunciate, Yogi, Scholar, #Warrior Recently, after 13 years of growth, I decided to #cut my hair short again. Many of my friends are struggling to assimilate the #change. Granted, it is stark - the buzzcut invokes a hard, sharp, militant #edge. The decision to prune away the fuzz was a convergence of several things - my daughter's womanhood (I stopped cutting my hair at her birth), my growing disgust with hippie flakiness, and a recent relational rupture which put to rest my #infatuation with the tantrik tinkerbell. Yet the short hair also is a reflection of #renunciation, and my acceptance of the warrior archetype. Renunciation, from a #tantrik perspective does not imply an outward rejection of the austerities, comforts and commitments of the #householder life. Nor does it mean turning my back on the injustice and suffering of others to gaze at my own navel in meditative self-absorption or #bliss-addiction. No. I revel in the sensual delights. I am thoroughly embedded in the worldly matters of householding and parenting. I am deeply committed to challenging injustice and harm in this world. This commitment arises precisely from clear insight and #disillusionment with the shallow, delusional and sisyphian quest for social standing, #wealth, #power, and ego-bloat that the vast majority of humanity is entangled in. Seeing these things as they are - the seeds of our collective #suffering - gives rise naturally to a sense of disgust, and a capacity to #discriminate that which matters from that which doesn't... to prune the superfluous, and to challenge those who perpetuate suffering and delusion. Perhaps this is why I have cultivated such a love affair with the #blade, that archetypal symbol of the hunter and warrior. Blades cut the useful from the useless, they #penetrate to the heart of things, they allow us to shape, carve and craft, to thrive in the wild. The #sword demands #discipline, #focus, precision and clarity, an ageless symbol of #sovereignty. While neotantra emphasises lust-love-and-light, I am committed to a deeper acceptance: the entire polarity of desire and aversions. And that means saying yes to my no. #tantra #yoga
