A native Asteraceae, endemic to SWWA. This one taken in July, in an area dominated by Marri East of Wanneroo Rd, and the old iPhone X did a great job considering how small the disk is, the mature flowers on the outside, and the unopened in the middle. According to Wikipedia “ In 2017, Australian customs officials destroyed 106 herbarium specimens of Lagenophora that Australian scientists were attempting to re-import into the country, but the specimens’ documentation was insufficient. The specimens dated to as early as the 1790s, and included six type specimens. Family Zamiaceae Closely related to the other common Zamia palm around Perth called Macrozamia reidlei that lives more in Jarrah forest and has flattened leaves. Can grow well in poor soils as it can obtain nitrogen from a symbiotic relationship with cyanbacteria that fix the nitrogen into a form that the plant can use. Very slow growing. The plant in photo three would be 400 years old. The cones persist on the plants for many months. The plants are also Dioecious which means they are either make or female. The seeds have a red flesh called a sarcotesta that is poisonous. The aboriginals treated the seeds to removes the poisons before roasting and eating. Stylidium Sp. An abusive relationship! Forgetting to photograph the rosette of leaves at the base it could be one of 3 or 4 species that were originally classified as Stylidium brunonianum, if you go back you can see these Stylidium already posted last year. An abusive relationship, you ask, what is this guy on about now? Well the flowers of this plant love to smack it’s pollinators on the head with a a fused stamen and style, in which the reproductive organs take turns in dominating the function of the “hammer” to avoid self pollination. Not only that, its glandular trichomes will trap and absorb little insects that visit, so if you’re too small to cop a smack, you’ll get “absorbed”. There are currently 50 ish species in the Perth region, 48 in the combined Gin Gin/ Wanneroo area that I like to explore, and 221 in total with new species being discovered constantly, there’s probably a new bunch ready to be classified as I type this. You’ll notice earlier I said “absorb” insects rather than digest, because it seems they can’t use the nutrients, so rather than being fully carnivorous, they are protocarnivorous. Is this an accidental adaptation or are these plants doing it for the lolz? South of Pippidinny Rd on Wanneroo Rd, growing in a patch between the remnants of old Wanneroo Rd and the new Rd, there is a patch of “fire” red (thanks for the description @playtard ). I decided I’d walk from Butler train station home and have a look after work, hoping I would get there before the light failed. Part of the fun of accidentally documenting the plants from Gin Gin to Butler is travelling along the bush tracks discovering all the interesting flora and fauna along the way, or sometimes it’s just headphones in and rocking out to music along the way. Worth a 15 clicks walk after work, well… … what a stunner, it’s insanely “red” brushy flowers against the grey bark and dark green leaves, giving delight to drivers as they drive along the highway. I have an inkling it’s B. aestiva, but I’m not confident, so if anyone can give me an ID I’d appreciate it.
