After → Before. This juniper received a make-over during the week, turning from promising raw stock to a fantastic small bonsai. It was left to grow untouched over the last three seasons, partly because I was unsure about the direction I wanted to take it, and also to give me more to work with when it came to design. The blue hue and soft foliage give the tree a delicate and unique look, while the deadwood features show age and distress, playing a major part in its design. A definite stand out in any collection. I cooked something amazing tonight. It’s called “Sinkonta”, it’s Turkish in origin. I couldn’t sleep last night so I got out of bed and watched Rick Stein’s Venice to Istanbul. I don’t think he was wearing his pink shirt, it must have been in the wash. But he stopped in the backstreets and went to a restaurant that was basically a tent and this lovely lady made him this dish. It only contained three ingredients, Pumpkin and Onions and Sun-dried Tomato paste. I’ve just cooked it tonight, but I’ve added Chicken Legs. I absolutely love a one dish meal. It was delicious, so now I’m sharing it with you. In a bowl add 4x Onions cut up in slices. Add salt and lots of Pepper. I added the juice of half a lemon and Garlic. Then I added 4 big tablespoons of Tomato paste and 2 tablespoons of plain flour. Mix this through with your hands. Then I cut my Queensland Blue Pumpkin into slices. I cut these slices up into squares and put them in a non stick baking dish. I used 1/4 of a Pumpkin. I didn’t remove the skin. I covered the dish with this. Tip the marinated onions over the Pumpkin. Then sit your chicken legs or wings on top. Salt and Pepper the chicken then drizzle Olive oil over the entire dish. Cook in a preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the chicken goes brown. Serve it with Greek Yoghurt. It was amazing. It was so creamy but there was no cream or dairy. The flour must be the secret. I’d probably add Anchovies next time and possibly Chick peas and Cappers too. But seriously it was so delicious and it’s another way of eating Pumpkins. Did I tell you I have around 25 to eat? It’s so cheap to make. It’s crazy. I’ve got lunches for 3 people. Following on from last night’s post, this is the result of the Elm Leaf Beetle to the 2 large Elms in the driveway. Elm Leaf Beetles are sadly very common across a large area of Australia where there are Elm Trees. If left untreated, over time, trees can die. The tree doesn’t get its chance to do what deciduous trees normally do in Autumn, which is draw all the nutrients out of the leaves and store them for producing new growth in Spring. The beetle is about the size of a grain of rice and is predominantly a light brown/gold colour. The most environmentally friendly method to effectively eradicate them and give the trees a chance at survival, is to inject the tree with a ‘vaccination’ into the trunk, that spreads through the tree and into the leaves. The treatment lasts for at least 2 years. We wouldn’t normally use any insecticide/chemicals on the property, anywhere, but weighing up our options, this is the most safe method for us, the environment and the best chance for the trees. Canopy spraying is another option, but we won’t use any chemical sprays under any circumstances, so no chance of that and soil injection can kill organisms and anything else living in the soil. We've been sharing our Citrus tree in the nursery with a few hungry little Orchard Swallowtail caterpillars. They are technically considered a pest, but they don't eat much and while they remain within our damage thresholds we are happy to live in peace together, with the reward of beautiful swallowtail butterflies to come. It's so important to support our pollinators, try to remember not every insect needs to be eradicated, its a balance. These particular little caterpillars are pretty interesting. They begin life cleverly disguised - resembling a little black/white bird poo, slowly turning green like this one. When threatened, they rear up and shoot these red horn-like protrusions from their head. If the birds aren't scared off, they get a nice meal.. if it works, he'll get time to morph into a beautiful butterfly.

The Citrus and Feijoa’s are starting to ripen in the garden. This critically endangered Australian Native Hibiscus has a permanent home at Mother Earth. We grow a few plants each year doing our part to help preserve this amazing native plant 🌺. And we have a small number in the nursery now! 🤩 It is very rarely seen in nurseries. But is just as easy to grow as other hibiscus. And it makes the most amazing hedge! It has very small leaves and small flowers which add to its density and hedging appeal. But it also makes the most fantastic pot specimen with its little leaves and flowers giving a perfectly balanced plant. The flowers start green and burgundy, and change to pink as they age. And it flowers profusely from October to May! Why not plant one today and help conserve this beautiful Hibiscus? Pop in to the nursery and get yours 🥰 🌺. Some interesting history on this little beauty! Due to overgrazing and feral pest animals , the population was down to only 8 plants in 1963! And in 2003 with conservation efforts the population had increased to only 50 plants and was stretched over only a 10 x 50m patch on the island! Today the population is still slowly recovering! Good morning folks, it’s very chilly here at the moment ! We have our heat going all throughout the night now just to try and keep the cottage a nice even temperature for Jeff. It’s lovely to wake up during the night and feel cozy and warm and it really helps with his chest. Miss D’s funeral was incredibly hard. It was such a lovely tribute to her. I’ll never ever forget her and how kind she was to Jeffy and ourselves… and of course she just adored Daisy too and the feeling was definitely mutual from us all ❤️🩹🙏🏼 I’m off to the farmers market this morning so I’d better get a move on ! Mint $3.50 each Mint like full sun to part shade. It does require constant moisture, try growing mint in morning sun and shade from midday onwards. Mint will grow for a number of years, it will die back in winter, but will bounce back in spring. Prune regularly to encourage new growth. Mint doesn’t mind being cut back to control growth.
