Anyone who read those posts came away convinced that this story is about nothing more than a couple of bumbling nincompoops (Kevin and Pete) who are baptized in the flames of their own incompetency during a trial-by-fire pilgrimage, on foot, through the heart of America’s most magnificent natural wonder. Even worse: the photos that your team was clueless enough to post alongside the excerpt only reinforced the impression that the book’s title should immediately be changed from “A Walk in the Park” to “Beavis and Butthead Backpack the Grand Canyon.” And then you conclude by recommending that most folks NOT buy the book?! A number of years ago, shortly after quitting my job as a magazine editor to pursue the ill-advised delusion of becoming a dory guide on the Colorado River, I was approached by my best friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, the two of us would embark upon an end-to-end traverse, on foot, through the heart of America’s most magnificent landscape feature — an excursion that he assured me would be “a walk in the park.” Against my better judgment, I agreed to this ludicrous proposal, despite being dimly aware that the few experts who had actually completed a transect of the Grand Canyon billed it as “the toughest hike in the world.” The ensuing 750-mile marathon took us 75 days, spread across 8 back-to-back expeditions over 14 months. But it took far longer for me to write the story of what unfolded during that time—an ordeal that proved to be every bit as tortuous, fraught, and unpleasant as the walk itself. Now, after six years of furious, nonstop typing, I’m relieved to announce, at the start of National Parks Week, that the job is complete and the book (whose title was inspired by the lie that Pete sold to me back at the start of this mess) will finally be published at the end of next month. Whew. Time to collapse on the couch for a very long nap… But no! According to a memo I just got from my editor in New York, over the next five weeks, I’ll be busy putting up a detailed series of posts offering glimpses into some of the book’s main themes, and spotlighting a number of amazing people who were instrumental in the completion of this project. We were lucky to see some lovely photos again from Saturday’s @wimbledoncommonvillagewalktalk kindly led by Peter Haldane, the Conservation Manager of Wimbledon Common who took over 50 walkers, including 5 first timers to see the Heathland areas of the Common, one of the last remaining fragments of heathland in London. Peter showed the work done by staff and many volunteers to keep this important habitat alive and thriving. The walk continued towards the golf course and passed their newest pond, Ravine Pond, before ending at the Information Centre for delicious refreshments and an opportunity to meet the horses. Huge thanks to all from the Rangers office. Thanks also to the amazing generosity of the walkers, they also helped the Big Give appeal to raise its target £10,000 to restore the heathland habitats. The Wimbledon Park Walk and Talk thanked Barbara for leading their walk through the Park and treating them to one of her favourite poems. Afterwards, they made their way to Wimbledon Tennis where they enjoyed hot drinks with the compliments of the AELTC in the Wingfield café. Carole said that it was a delight to meet three new walkers who joined for the first time and again mentioned how far some of their walkers travel to join on a Saturday morning, including three this week from the Wembley area. A big, big thank you for getting up so early to travel to Wimbledon Park!
