I channeled my inner cheetah and finished the 5km WCS Run for the Wild in a (speedy for me!) 28min this morning🌟 This year’s event was dedicated to snow leopards 🐆 ❄️ They are vulnerable to extinction with less than 10,000 remaining in the wild. At the race opening, we heard that 80 snow leopard cubs have been born so far at the @wcs Bronx Zoo. Together, 5251 people have raised over $514,000 so far thanks to the Run for the Wild event! Can you guess what we were doing with the cardboard frames? On Tuesday we hosted an educational volunteer day for 10 super enthusiastic Pfizer volunteers. We used 50cm x 50cm cardboard frames to conduct FIT Counts - Flower-Insect Timed Counts. 🌺 🐝 This Citizen Science initiative is coordinated by @allirelandpollinatorplan and @biodatacentre inviting people to contribute to important data collation on insect variety and abundance from gardens, parks, schools, businesses. With insects numbers declining we need to measure in order to manage the solution. And there’s a cool app to make it super easy to do this 10 minute exercise. 😎 The results were very interesting with #Elderflower having the most visits from insects followed by Bird cherry and then hawthorn. The group also mixed in leaf mulch into the raised beds of the Tree Nursery, weeded around 500 oak saplings, planted Wildacres wildflower seed in module trays, and even started the dig on pond number 37! And the sun shone ☀️ what a bonus! Thanks to the brilliant Pfizer group for choosing Wildacres and for all your hard work and great company. Three Woodland Allies in flower amongst the Bluebells this week of edible and medicinal interest... They also add even more fab colours to the spectacle! 1) Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) Traditionally used as a medicinal plant, the leaves of Herb Robert have a pungent smell and a spicy, citrus taste that can add a bit of a tang to salads or used to make tinctures and teas. The Hippy just snacks on it raw-off-the-floor on a regular. Not only is it stacked full of vitamins and minerals, it is a natural source of Germanium, which is an oxygen carrier that stimulates electrical impulses at a cellular level, benefitting the entire body. It is an energy-booster and immune-system-builder with antibiotic, antiviral and antioxidant properties! Today we bid a very fond farewell to one of our lovely Skylarks. She had a fabulous day. She donned her traditional forest school mud face paint, made a giant pencil, helped prepare (and eat!) wild garlic bread and lit one last fire. We'll miss her quiet, kind ways, her fabulous crafting and creativity and her lovely company. We hope she enjoys the heaviest present we've ever bought and can't wait to see what she makes with it! Inspirational visit to Rodney Stoke Nature Reserve in the #Mendips. It’s a tiny nature reserve with no parking and that seems to be enough to put people off. It’s a gem though: filled with ancient trees, bluebells and wild garlic, the sharp clatter of green woodpeckers and sooty handfuls of jackdaws. I am very excited to announce the publication of a new paper in which I collaborated! First-of-its-kind study shows conservation actions work - and are effective at slowing biodiversity loss. A new comprehensive study, led by @rewild, @iucn_congress, @dice.kent, and @oxford_uni and published in @sciencemagazine, looked at the impact of a wide range of conservation interventions globally and over time. Conservation interventions such as invasive species control, habitat loss reduction and restoration, protected areas and sustainable management of ecosystems improved the state of biodiversity or at least slowed its decline in two-thirds of cases. However, in order to meet global targets to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, conservation actions must be transformationally scaled up and receive much more investment. Somewhere down the line, somewhere in our history we became disconnected, we lost our way. At some point in our past we forgot that everything is connected. We started to think that we were the masters, that everything was ours for the taking. Everything on and in the earth was ours, the world was ours to conquer. At some point in our past we stopped taking only what we needed, and started taking what we wanted. we took, and we took it all, we wanted it and we want it all. Now we live in a disconnected, disjointed and broken world as a consequence for our actions. Honour has disappeared, along with our connection to the planet, it’s Gods, Goddesses our ancestors, the spirits of the land and our values. We are becoming more and more distant, not only from the planet but from each other. We go to work, go home and switch on our TVs, computers and our gaming consoles. We plug ourselves into the grid and we sit and we watch and we disconnect even more from a world we have created. Seeking escape in media and in multi media. Trapped in a mindset that things matter. I need that… Thing. The disconnection from nature and the planet we have created has caused health and mental health related issues to rise. In 2020 we were told that nature had hit back, And we felt it, boy did it hit us hard. Because of this we now live in an even more disjointed and shattered world. For most of us, the me, me, me, I am priority mindset is the new norm. Yet.. Somewhere, deep inside some of us, a switch has been flicked. That part of our DNA which was once our ancestors, that need to connect which is in each of us is being turned on. More and more people are acknowledging this feeling, this pull and once again turning to the old ways, the forgotten ways. Seeking to reconnect with the old gods, with nature, spirits of the land and all things, with our ancestors and with ourselves. You see, the entire Earth is filled with magic. Reframe continued. I recently read a very thought-provoking book by Korean-born philosopher Byung-Chul Han called Saving Beauty. Han is occupied with how our late-modern need for smoothness and convenience has destroyed beauty in the sense that beauty has turned into nothing but Han’s book on beauty starts like this: “The smooth is the signature of the present time. It connects the sculptures of Jeff Koons, iPhones and Brazilian waxing. Why do we today find what is smooth beautiful? Beyond its aesthetic effect, it reflects a general social imperative. It embodies today’s society of positivity. What is smooth does not injure. Nor does it offer any resistance. It is looking for Like. The smooth object deletes its Against. Any form of negativity is removed.” No, Han is not a big fan of Koons. He later writes that Koons’ smooth sculptures cause a haptic compulsion to touch them, even the desire to suck them. This is not a good thing in Han’s world. Not at all. In order to save beauty - and reunite with all facets of beauty; not only the smooth ones, but also rawness, the anti-smoothness, complexity, the sublime - we must salvage negativity. The aesthetics of beauty in modern times equals smoothification. And the aesthetic of the smooth is embodied in Koons’ smooth, shiny sculptures: they lack negativity and are reduced to beauty, joy and communication. They are shiny as mirrors - and isn’t that all we want now-a-days? A mirror that we can meet ourselves in, admire ourselves in, be confirmed within (- otherness, rawness, decay, danger, diversity, negativity is absent). As Han. puts it: The beautiful is exhausted in a Like-it culture.
