Saying goodbye to fosters is always difficult, especially when a goodbye isn’t for an adoption. Hospice fostering isn’t my first choice but, if ever given another chance, I would choose to foster Mickey every time. Loving him (and losing him) changed me for the better, and I know he also made a big impression on everyone he met at PAWS, so he deserves his own post here. 🤍 We still don’t know what caused his sudden decline, but his top differential was some type of neurological disease, possibly/probably cancer. Whatever ailment he had precipitously stripped away his vigor and shine. Meeting a cat like Mickey was as rare and as special as catching a glimmer of the ‘green comet’, which was seen only once in the night sky over the last 50,000 years. His eyes matched the aurora borealis green and he had the cutest wittle underbite. No matter how he was feeling, he gave the most comforting embraces, placing his paws on your shoulders. I only fostered him for a short time, but I tried my best to love him enough to last a lifetime. He deserved that. Mickey forever. 🤍 #hospicecat #hospicefoster #petloss
🥹 We want to make a special post for a dog who recently crossed the rainbow bridge. You see this pup wasn't just a regular old beagle. He was a very special old man who was also very lucky...after being pulled from the county shelter he was discovered to have a heart condition. This meant he didn't have a long time left, but still had a good quality of life. Basically he needed a place to retire. Lucky for him an amazing home was found just for this.... ❤️ HOSPICE FOSTER ❤️ It means taking in a dog or cat for an unknown amount of time so they can live out their days. The people who do this are true heroes and give so many animals the retirement they deserve, fully knowing sometime in the near future they will have to say goodbye. Well Patrick had that for another full year...of snuggles, sleeping in a bed, and of course eating. So if you want to really make a difference, go to your local animal rescue or shelter and ask if they have a hospice foster program. We love and miss you Patrick. We knew our time with Maggie would be short since she was 14 years old and had congestive heart failure when she was brought into the shelter but we also knew that we would give her love till the day she became an angel 4-24-24. We know we cannot save every dog but we really wanted to save Winston and give him an extraordinary rest of his life. Winston is in peace now and will never suffer again. 💔🌈 We received this heartbreaking email from his foster mom. It is with a very broken heart that I have to tell you that Winston took a turn for the worst today. He had an amazing day yesterday and had a luxurious bath and he was such a good boy. Always wagging his tail no matter how much pain he was in. He woke up today totally defeated. His right eye ruptured and his left eye was going as well and he could no longer stand to pee.The ER vet confirmed his eye was ruptured and was very very painful. Between that and his hips not having any hip sockets, mouth full of exposed roots and holes in his gums/missing gums, we decided we couldn't put this boy through any more pain. I was just torturing him with the ears as they were very painful as well. Between his ears and eyes today he was crying and shying away so I would not touch them anymore. I was so hopeful we could get his pain level down from an 8 to a 4. The ER vet thought he was at a minimum of eight and a half years old. My vet said he had been in pain for a very long time probably due to a car accident which ruined his jaw (and his gums probably from road rash). This poor guy had a life of pain and suffering. Somebody took care of him at some point and then they just dumped him in a field. He got to meet my dogs last night and had a great night on the bed beside mine eating a cabone stuffed with frozen peanut butter. At least he had one last good night. Before we went to the emergency room we stopped to get two double cheeseburgers which we had at the ER along with a can of cat food. He went out like a king. He's no longer in pain. Temp hospice foster Nini seems to be enjoying her time here. She’s a good girl who is estimated to be 17-18 yrs old. She’ll be heading home soon so wanted to share a cute pic of her while she’s here. 🩷 A little background… A few months ago, Nini was found roaming around out in Jefferson County. Short story is that her lifelong owners were eventually located and called. They had driven from Illinois to Jefferson County, Missouri to dump Nini and no longer wanted her because she was old. JCAC took Nini in, reached out to SLSDP, and thankfully a new hospice foster stepped up for Nini. Without fosters like Nini’s stepping up, SLSDP and other rescues can’t do what they do. Every rescue and shelter is struggling so much right now without more people stepping up to help. We’re all under water and need help. Please consider fostering. Winston update. We received this update from Winston’s foster mom: As you can see he's gaining very little weight after being here for almost two weeks and eating three times a day. He's on prescription dog food now which is helping with his GI issues from the antibiotics. We chose a different antibiotic to fight three different MAJOR infections that he has going on. It seems to be helping. His ears are clearing up nicely and I'm praying the kennel cough is on its way out. But he takes two steps forward and one step back but I'm still praying he continues to do better. He's also on pain meds which is making him feel a little more comfortable. There's not much we can do about his mouth but he is eating. It's just that the GI is so messed up from the kennel cough and the antibiotics that everything is not staying inside of him. But he is sweet and just wants to be loved. That's what he will get! Winston is a hospice foster. Whatever remaining time he has left will be filled with love and as pain free as we can get him. It was noted at his last doctor’s visit that he was unsteady and easily fell over due to pain. He’s been put on pain meds since then and is getting around a little easier. We will continue to watch Winston very closely and will make sure he’s comfortable. This poor dog was neglected, mistreated and then thrown away like trash! After a short visit due to his foster family’s vacation, Rock is back at his new home. From the looks of things, he’s very happy to be reunited! Rock is still considered a hospice case; he’s on oral chemotherapy and a bunch of other medicines, but he’s eating well, playing with toys, and he’s got a family to love him. Paddy is a friend to all, even when the friend wants some personal space. 😂💕😂 Last week hospice foster Chestnut was enjoying some lap time, and Paddy decided to join 🦕. Paddy likes to check on Chestnut, and Paddy always likes to be where the action is. For a dog that was very reserved and shy when he first arrived, Paddy is the most outgoing of the pack and always zesty ! Chestnut however, was not amused by Paddy. 😂 Truthfully, Chestnut doesn’t mind at all, he just likes to give a little side-eye from time to time. Of course, Paddy gave no warning, he just jumped up. To know Paddy, is to love Paddy. 💕 Chestnut continues to do great! Mom is out for a few days, but Chestnut doesn’t seem to mind as he adapts to changes easily and he is still eating a ton! Miss Opal is joining us for a few days. Opal is in fospice with our good friend Dawn. She's looking and feeling so much better! She still has a few scabs left even after almost 3 months. Her mobility is better with Dawn's dedication to walks every day and weekly acupuncture/laser therapy. At approximately 12 years old and spondylosis, we weren't sure what her quality of life would look like but she's just the happiest lady. It may not look like much, but this is a huge deal for mama Linda! She’s been going a bit stir crazy and really wants to be a part of the rest of the household, but she gets nervous and when she gets nervous, she gets bitey. I love this little #Gatito cat aka Moonlight. 🥹 He got a little sampler platter of #sashimi, with #tuna being the first choice, #salmon second, and then the rest scarfed down in whatever order he could fit it into his face. He's the sweetest little idiot and is a big fan of sleeping in laundry or on faces. He likes to lick bathtub after we shower, and will touch the falling droplets and then run away as fast as he can. He's an excellent moth catcher and ant crusher. His #HeartDisease is palpable the moment you touch him - he's got a #thrill that he occasionally tries to cover up with purring. His zoomies usually end in collapsing and having all sorts of respiratory disasters. He has moderate cranial organomegaly, so I assume his liver isn't loving his heart disease. He's lived past what we expected (I was told a month based on #echocardiology in mid-February). Now that the boys are out of the house and both girls are going to be official Critter Cottage residents, I’m changing a few things around to make Linda’s time here as a hospice foster as happy and stress-free as possible. Since I’m taking this year off from rehabbing, she’ll be getting her very own bedroom in the critter room. Hopefully I can get her integrated into the rest of the pack, but I’m prepared for the possibility that it might not happen given her aggression from whatever trauma this poor mama endured in her past life. If anyone is able and would like to donate to this sweet (to me 😅) mama, I’ve added some items to our wish list to make her room and remaining time as comfy as possible. #MedicalMiraclesMonday #BeAMedicalMiracleMaker From Lenore, Sept 12, 2023: "I spent a lot of the last 90 days snuggling in the evenings with Frank, our hospice foster who came to us with prostate cancer and dementia and given up by his family at age 14. He was the toughest foster I’ve ever had but also the most rewarding. He didn’t get the memo on not biting the hand that feeds you, he had accidents and basically lived in the kitchen where there were no rugs, he was cantankerous. But in the evenings he would just unwind and want to be held. So that’s what we did every night for the last 3 months. Today he was set free once and for all and I’m so happy he can run again and is pain free. Thank you to the wonderful organization who brought him to us @LittlePawsDachshundRescue and his previous foster mom @stephcocchiara (UHa alum and fellow doxie lover) and drove three hours just to say goodbye. Special thanks to Leah Holistic Home Veterinary Services LLC for letting Frank have a peaceful passing at home. Thank you to my mom for making the drive to be there when he passed. SEVEN years ago today, I took in a 10 year old pug who had inoperable mast cell cancer in his left nostril. I was told he would only live for a few weeks to a few months. I would never let a pug die in a shelter. Seven years later, here we are. 🐾Check out the Amazing Libby! She has been with us for 2 years and 9 months when her prognosis was very poor. She was found as a stray matter with a one pound tumor that was removed. As she healed, we went back and removed all her mammary masses. A year later, an x-ray showed that cancer was back and everywhere. She has pushed through and lived her best life, happy with her canine and feline siblings. She has become super affectionate, seeking out cuddles. We will say goodbye May 3 and until then, we are giving her the BEST life. Hospice fostering is a gift! The most heartbreaking part of rescue is when you find out the real reason why a dog was abandoned and living as a stray. Mr. Snickers came to us as a stray on the street. He was matted and underweight. After taking him to one of our amazing vet partners, it turned out he had an aggressive bone cancer that was expected to cause havoc on his body. But he still had spark and energy like he wanted to be loved, so we ended up amputating the leg that was the infected the most. Our wonderful hospice foster showed him love when he needed it the most. She was there for him when his original people weren't. She was there for him when he needed pain meds to keep him comfortable. She was there for him when he took his last breath whispering, "mama loves you". What's harder than fostering? Hospice fostering. We love all our fosters and their dedication to the animals in our rescue. It's definitely not for the faint of heart. ❤️Pawl is an 11mo, 72lb, mannerless, mastiff stubborn, wrecking ball of joy and affection with a chewing addiction. He’s a, “take you out at the knees trying to kiss your face” type of guy. Pawl also has Severe Subaortic Stenosis and Pulmonic Stenosis. He takes medication daily to help his heart function better but that’s a bandaid for an unfixable issue. The original plan was for Pawl to hang out in foster here while we completed what vetting his condition would allow and then head to Peace Ridge Sanctuary. ❤️We ran into some other issues of the heart though… 😍Pawl fell completely in love with a little girl and she with him.😍 Pawl had the opportunity to to live with his favorite tiny human, as part of a real family. So the issue became, how do we make WreckingBall Pawl easier to live with?😩 ❤️Enter Taylor Walton of No Xcuses K9, LLC - South Carolina. I originally called Taylor for advice but apparently Taylor had been watching Pawls story and when I explained he had the opportunity to be part of a family willing to love him for all of his days, no matter how many or how few, Taylor quickly (and excitedly) insisted that Pawl come spend a couple of days a week with her. I’m not sure which of us was more excited for Pawl, but I do know Taylor was absolutely the more determined (and skilled) of us to make this happen for him. So this week Pawl spent Thursday and Friday with Taylor and I can with confidence say that Taylor and team are putting their all into teaching Pawl to be the best possible family member, roommate and camping buddy he can possibly be. ❤️I’m not quite sure how to express how grateful I am to Taylor for lending her expertise and her time to make this family life possible for Pawl. Pawl was once defined by his diagnosis and left behind in a shelter because of it. The shelter posted that he needed a, “Friend of the Friendless.” Pawl has lots of friends now, and a family too.❤️ ❤️Pawl will remain, “in rescue” as a “hospice foster,” but he will very much be a beloved family member with his very own little girl to love and adore. “Yay! Another day with Trixie!” This is what we tell Trix every morning, because we have no expectations on her time table or when she might be ready to fly away to the rainbow bridge. Despite cancer growing in her tummy, her symptoms are pretty well managed, but we know it’s only a matter of time. So we try and celebrate every day we get to have with this beautiful, fluffy cloud. If you get a chance, I highly recommend hospice fostering. Plum's appointment went well-ish again. Changing her medication amount has held her numbers steady. Her weight is the same as her last appointment two months ago!!! This is a huge win!! A raw egg am/pm, oats, and weight gainer(when donated) have helped keep her stable ♥︎ She has got a little more fluid in her abdomen, but not enough to tap her to drain it yet. Her vet said most likely at the 6 month mark she will need it and then we will go from there. Her bill was the straight forward $250 per usual, but I have yet to receive an invoice via email. I always post our bills for transparency purposes, but they had a new receptionist who couldn't quite figure it out yet. We have $235 left to raise to cover her cardiologist appointment and she could really use oats and weight gainer off her amazon wishlist. . 🖤🩶 Gerald “GG” Update 🩶🖤 He is the love of his mama Angie’s life. He looks great. His fur is fluffy& shiny. He has pep in his, still a bit crooked, step. His mouth has healed from the major dental work we did (28 extracted teeth!). He is on his 3rd dose of Labrela & we are seeing improvements. Gerald was brought into @humanesocietypikespeak as a stray. He was in very rough shape & Angie & I weren’t sure how long he would be with us. But he is here to stay & soak up all of the love & gobble up every morsel of food that is offered. Finding humans who want nothing more than give an old, sick being a soft place to feel safety & love is very special thing. 💔 We have some sad news to report. Yesterday we lost our Granny kitty that has been with a hospice-foster since last April. 💔 There’s not too many people out there that would offer to foster a 16 year old kitty with a page full of medical issues. But we saw the picture of Granny and then saw a comment from someone offering to take her and my gut said to do it. I replied to the comment saying that if she was serious let’s talk—because most of the time people offer as an emotional reaction, but rarely do they follow up. But @spagettyos_ was serious, and we were able to rescue her in the Nick of time from being euthanized at an LA high-kill shelter. She had been a stray and then when they checked for a microchip-they found one-but the old owners didn’t want her. 😔How could you leave your kitty there to be put to sleep? Luckily we found a person willing to go pull her out and transport her to Jacqui. From there is was all soft beds, treats and good food! Oh my! Scott and I have been downstairs most of the day cleaning. Joby has been in the 2nd bedroom upstairs. Today we left the gate up (keep Poe out), and cat door open, because Spook and Ethan have been fine with him. I went up to put books in the room, and Joby had wandered out to the landing! What a shock! That was twice as far as we've seen him go! I stayed and pet him. He had "elevator butt" going on, which was great. I came back down to tell Scott about the elevator butt, and to get snacks, and I turned around and Joby was in the living room! He came down the stairs to look around! He was promptly rewarded with snacks. He's doing (comparatively) so well. #madacc #hospicefoster
