Last month Tim and John @thebiggestofjohns went to the Houten Reptile Expo together and Tim brought some new critters home, along with other supplies. We have a small aquarium in which we used to keep blue shrimps (Neocaridina sp.) which have sadly all passed away alongside some European Physa snails we occasionally feed to Bean our Pea Puffer. So we wanted to add some new/extra life to the tank. Tim brought home some new shrimps: - Neocaridina davidi, Red morph (also known as N. heteropoda) And three new species of snails: - Planorbarius corneus sp. Red also known as the Great Ramshorn - Neritina sp. Zebra thorn also known as Horned nerite snails or Zebra thorn nerites - Tylomelania sp. also known as Rabbit snails or Sulawesi snails Which have now all joined our - Physella acute also known as European physa/tadpole snail/(acute) bladder snail 🇳🇱 In februari zijn Tim en John samen naar de reptielenbeurs in Houten geweest en Tim heeft toen wat nieuwe diertjes meegebracht. Snails: unsightly pest vs valuable addition. What do you think? Wasn't very happy, to be honest, when I first realised that I had let in snails in to the tank by way of forgetting to desensitise the plants. I've since allowed them to remain in the tank as I've heard that snails contribute towards the ecological balance of a planted setup. However, I do have to pick them out every once in a while in order to keep their population under control as there aren't any predators in the tank who could do the job for me! 😆 This particular fellow is a bladder snail (physella acuta) I assume. 🐚 CARACOLES PHYSAS El jarrón de bambú, se ha convertido en un caracolario de forma inesperada. No he visto ni una sola tienda que venda este tipo de caracoles, dado que son un peligro por lo rápido que hacen plaga en el acuario. Sin embargo, a cuantos nos han venido por sorpresa estos amiguitos al comprar plantas acuática en la tienda? Ya respondo yo, a la gran mayoría!! Por eso recomiendan limpiar las plantas antes de meterlas en el acuario. Para quitar algún caracol, algunos huevos, limpiar posibles algas que tengan, etc... y aún así, lo más seguro que alguno se te cuele. En el acuario no los podía dejar, matarlos tampoco quería. Se me ocurrió que si los mantenía y criaba podría tener una “granja” o “criadero” para dar comida fresca ala tortuga y obtuviera calcio de los caparazones. DAY 5 - Happy Hatchday babies! I was feeling particularly jittery this day. Had already checked on them but just knew they were gonna hatch soon so I went down again only to find out 3 individuals had already hatched and crawled out of the jelly! So I hastily set up and managed to capture 2 of them in the process of hatching, seemingly munching their way out. Side note, without the layers of magnification provided by the jelly and egg fluid and water, the hatchlings are actually so much smaller than they appeared as embryos! DAY 4 - So the little snail embryos have moved past the veliger stage and into the hippo stage, yes that is really the scientific term. Not sure why hippo but maybe because they are so big now. Pigmentation has also come in, looking pretty and cute and ready to pop any time soon! When I didn't have any snails in my tank, I wanted snails so I was actually excited when a plant I bought had a couple bladder snails on it. Little did I know that a couple weeks later I would have hundreds of little baby snails crawling around. There were eggs all over my plants. So, I did what I've read some people do.. I smashed them 🙈 against the glass. It may sound inhumane but I couldn't just collect them and flush them in the toilet, then they'd go infest somewhere else! I had to kill them. I came to not feel so guilty because my fish love to eat them up as they're falling. Smashing, however, was not enough. I also bought a few assassin snails! They're pretty cool looking and every once in a while you'll see a cleaned out snail shell, that's the product of their hardwork. In addition, I had also accidentally made a snail trap. If you look at a few slides ago, I had a post with bamboo and other plants at the surface of the water. I also had bok choy which bladder snails absolutely love, especially when it's rotting. So I attracted a lot of snails that way. Got my bok choy and just simply threw it away. The snails dry up and die. To conclude, my snail population is controlled, for now. Whew. Physella acuta es un caracol que en la actualidad se encuentra distribuído por todo el mundo, siendo considerado el caracol dulceacuícola más cosmopolita. Su presencia en Canarias está constatada desde muy antiguo, ya que fue citada por Web & Berthelot en 1833. No obstante, actualmente se cree que tiene un origen norteamericano, y que ha sido transportado por el ser humano por todo el globo. Es una especie hermafrodita capaz de autofecundarse, lo que explica en parte su éxito invasor. Upgraded the 3-gallon snail bowl to a 5.5-gallon tank. This will be much easier to maintain. Bowls are cool and look sweet when you set them up, but they're crazy hard to keep clean. So now there's a tank! Snail fun times! . Snails and many other molluscs utilize a rasping structure in their mouths called the radula (Latin for "little scraper") to feed. Through evolutionary time, this structure has been repurposed for diverse mechanisms of food processing, from methodically scraping algae off of surfaces (shown here, a Bladder Snail (Physella acuta) in my shrimp tank), to slicing up prey in the beaks of cephalopods. . These Bladder Snails seem to enjoy feeding on surface biofilm, "crawling" upside down on the water's surface and rasping away (see pics 3, 4 and video 2). A tutaj kolejny staroć - chyba najładniejsze zdjęcie rozdętki zaostrzonej (Physella acuta) jakie mam. Szkoda, że nie mnożą się niemożebnie 😞 A w ogóle to wzór na muszli wygląda podejrzanie co nie? 😁 Dosłownie wygląda jak kamuflaż erbsentarn ☠️ Ale to nie wina ślimaczka, że Niemcy skradli mu kamuflaż 🙈 Jako, że nie mnoży się niemożebnie to o rzekomej pladze tychże można zapomnieć (niestety...). Dokładnie tak samo jak w przypadku zatoczków. A gdyby już w ogóle trzeba było skorygować ich ilość to fizyczne usuwanie powinno załatwić "problem". I tak jak w przypadku zatoczków kompletnie nie szkodzą w akwarium, wręcz przeciwnie, są pożyteczne. No i mogą stanowić pokarm dla innych żyjątek.
