Doing a bit of a reccy into the places we saved, and those we didn’t. Was sitting in a grove of ancient trees today and it felt like I was with the grandparents. Big mountain ash that had a presence, almost like the quiet energy of an elder. It’s an area that’s remained undisturbed for a while, Parks Victoria have let it go and so, on the plus side, it feels undisturbed. The lyrebirds are indiscriminately returning the paths to scrub. The Black Cockatoo in the last video, were echoing like the voices of the forest. Camping and reconnecting, listening and learning. Some outtakes from a recent story for @thenarwhalca that I worked on with @b.elaine.a in Torngat Mountains National Park. The story is about the proposed marine protected area off the park’s coast, a haven for polar bears, arctic char, whales and coral. It is also the traditional homeland of Nunatsiavut Inuit. Exploring, as the rain falls, the land of the Kuku Yalanji people & the beauty of the #DaintreeRainforest, the oldest tropical rainforest in the world. And of course, this is also the only place in the world where two World Heritage-listed sites meet, the rainforest and the reef!
Just cruising around in an oversized shirt cause it’s too hot to wear anything else haha I think this is how I spent 90% of my time in the Daintree 😅 My favourite thing about that tropical wilderness is the fan palms.. I’m just obsessed. I want to bonsai them and keep them in my van ! There’s a boardwalk just down the road from PKs jungle village where you can find a whole section of them, filling the canopy with circular shapes 💚 The boardwalk itself is magical ~ it’s called Dubuji which means ‘place of spirits’. And you can feel that... as the walk winds it’s way through the rainforest, you can see different plant species popping up depending on the conditions and layout of the land. Often lines are drawn connecting markings of concentric circles; journeys made from one place of importance to another. . I entered this quiet space, to walk.
