I learned something about myself. I learned that when I write fictional stories I don't know how to end them. To try to combat this, I did a creative writing exercise of only writing endings for practice. And it kind of didn't work. I learned that I watch shows instead of movies because I want to be able to pause and come back to a story that is ongoing. I learned that when I look back on changes in my life I don't see them as endings, but as transitions. Or, just as often, as beginnings. The moves across the country or across town, the quitting of jobs, the break ups, the selling of cars. They were always the start of the next chapter. The creative writing exercise didn't teach me how to be better at writing endings to stories. But I did walk away with a list of places in my life where I let the scene in the rearview distract me from the view through the windshield. Every time I hike to a waterfall I say "this is better than Niagara Falls" regardless of how small it is. Or how much it smells like eggs. Sikanni Chief Falls is better than Niagara Falls AND the sulphur tries to be the main character. When you get far enough away from people all of the little delicate plants and flowers still thrive on the bedrock and I've never seen that before. In the middle of May I realized I was trying to feel nomadic from my couch. It was time to hit the road and find some stories that weren't told from home. New stories. So I started driving. I didn't know how far I'd get or what I'd find along the way. It might not have been the wildest adventure I've ever been on. But it had the highways, the truck stop showers, the coffee with friends, and none of it could have been planned ahead. The first stop was camping and recharging. The final stop is a perfect bookend of camping and recharging. By the time I pull back into my driveway it will have been nearly three weeks on the road. Next Sunday I'll set out again in another direction for just as long. It's been a few years since I had the ability to travel like this. To just set out and follow the wind. It feels like home. Since the last time, there are new viewers here in my space. While I do monitor followers, trips like this always bring the shadowy lookers and the oddly talented trackers into the open. Three days on the road and already it's time to remind you. As a solo female traveler I have rules. During months spent sleeping in an old van at truck stops across the American deserts and Canadian mountains, these rules kept me alive. I have rules about what to do when I'm being watched, followed, and finding a place to park. I've implemented them all this week. I have rules about social media. It has only been three days on the road, and already I have lost count of how many times I've implemented these. ✖️ I will not share a location until after I have moved on. ✖️ If your relationship with me is based solely on you following me on Instagram and you ask my location, I will not tell you. I always remind friends and family, if someone asks for more details than I've shared on my IG please don't give them more info. I could spend my time reminiscing about past roadtrips and adventures, but doing that was only making me more restless. I packed my camera and some very helter skelter wadded up clothes into my truck and hit the road. It's been two days of exploring new places, old places, and old places that look different. Allow me to introduce myself... Hey, I'm Tanis. I'm a traveling photographer and have been some version of that since 2009 when I was taking the Greyhound across Ontario during photo college. For a few years I was nomadic, living out of a van and cruising the highways between BC, Alaska, Texas, and PEI. That was my identity until 2020, the year I got locked down in a small Northern BC town. So now I'm a traveling photographer and website designer with a truck that can do backroads and a very new appreciation for backcountry adventures and -40 and the empty Alaska Highway. Now that the panasonic is behind us, life has changed. How people do creative businesses has changed. How I travel has changed. I'm working on being nomadic again. Bringing with me the photography, the story telling, and the adventure that we all know and love. The ultimate goal is to not walk away once the gallery is sent off. But to stick with you while websites are built and businesses grow and marketing is streamlined right into sales. Maybe this has turned into a description of what I do rather than who I am. But from what I've learned over the past few years of being a traveling photographer locked down in an isolated town is this - what I do is who I am. I'm me when I'm chasing stories with my camera. When I recap 2022 in my head, it doesn’t feel like a full year of going places in the way I expect of myself. These photos represent only nine days out of the year and it really does make being a traveling storytelling photographer look like a fun time. I tend to focus on the 300+ days I wasn't meeting with clients to document their stories and it was good for me to see this perspective. The thing about what I do for a living is that there are hundreds of days behind the wheel or behind the laptop to every 10 days of epic client sessions. A few hundred days of cabin fever to every five wild adventures. When I look forward to 2023 I try to mark the calendar with more epic. More wild. More stories that will give you all fomo. But the point is, there’s limited days in the year. And the emailing and editing and writing and website design still need to happen. So here’s my deal with you… If you join me across Canada to fill 65 days with your stories I will have a great attitude about spending the other 300 behind my laptop editing and writing.
