The colours of Provence... . It never ceases to amaze me, how well the roses grow in Provence. Coming from the UK, rose gardens seem to thrive in the cooler and dare I say, damper climate there, so I never imagined there would be such a great display in the heat of the south of France.... . But at the moment, the houses and villages are starting to glow with the colour and scent of these most beautiful flowers. Always a sight that I love. . When I left yesterday, our own little garden was full of colour from the ones we have growing there, and I only hope they are still in flower when I get back, but I really rather love this one too, rambling over a house in Saignon last year.... . Raindrops on roses .... . The last week may have been a bit soggy, but our little garden hasn't complained. Over the last few days the roses have really started bursting into life... . This is one of my favourites, a shell pink, fading to cream, which often has blooms the size of small tea-plates... . Our favourite garden at Valsaintes Abbey will be coming into its own too now, with its rose garden more akin to something we'd have seen in England, than you would imagine would be possible in Provence. . Happy Friday .... That's better . After a week of grey, wet and to be honest (at times) frankly depressing weather, we hopped on the bikes again today for a breezy and slightly chilly ride up to Bonnieux and back via Auribeau... . Mont Ventoux & the distant low Alps were sparkling with more snow, which seems incredible for May, and the air was filled with the sound of crickets chirruping in the grass... . It may have been a bit chilly on the knees, but just being back to turning the pedals again, brought a smile back to my face ... . A splash of red below Bonnieux.. . The last couple of days have seen us out walking, rather than cycling, and one of our walks took us up to Bonnieux for a second breakfast... . It's a lovely walk, up through the back lanes from Pont Julien, before heading back down the ancient tracks and trails that skirt the vineyards below Chateau Canorgue... . Despite the grey skies and occasional drips of rain, the spring colours were bright, with a scattering of poppies amongst the green... . It's a public holiday today in France, and there is a wonderful tradition of giving sprigs of Lily of the Valley to friends and neighbours to wish them good luck for the year ahead... . It all started with Charles IX, who was given a sprig on 1st May 1561 to bring him good luck and decided it would be nice to present the flowers to the ladies of his court every 1st May thereafter. Organised stripes leading to a swathe of poppies .. . So far this year, there haven't been too many poppy fields brightening the landscape, but yesterday this one just below Coquillade stood out against the grey sky... . Happily, the vines here seem to have survived the frost, so their leaves, as bright as 'uranium-glass' glowed against the ochre soil, their stripes leading directly to the poppies... . Strawberries or cherries?... . This morning, we headed into the market early to get a few bits, before battening down the hatches for the windy day ahead.. . Off the beaten track at Roussillon... . Yesterday was just lovely. Last year, when we cycled down, we were offered a night's stay with @timeline_arts & @peterjoyce_art at their home in the wildlife-filled, beautiful Marais Breton in the Vendée. We had a superb evening with them and yesterday, they joined us for a pootle in Fifi, and a walk (or 2) here in Provence... . We took one of our favourite walks, up through the ochres from Les Huguets, for an amble around Roussillon, before heading back past Ôkhra to the huge expanse of old ochre workings, where we sat on the rocks, in the sun... . It's a spectacular spot, with the muted, weather-worn, marbled colours of the rocks, shifting from rich reds and oranges, to saffron yellows and golds, as you walk down through the layers... . Trying to keep the vines warm... . Ten days ago it was 29 degrees and I was contemplating cycling in a sleeveless jersey. Today, we pulled the winter kit out of the drawer, having to wrap up warm to cycle in the bitingly cold, brisk Mistral... . We've woken to frosts for the last few days. The cars have been glittering with ice and the last of the wisteria flowers have been badly frosted. For the local farmers though, it is potentially a disaster... . Today, as we cycled through the back lanes between Roussillon and Saint Saturnin, bales of straw and hay had been lit at the end of the vines, in an effort to keep them warm and protect them from frost.... . Peaceful, flower-filled streets of Saignon... . This morning, we pootled out early in Fifi, pottering out to vide greniers at Rustrel and Banon, before heading up to Saignon for the vide jardin, to buy a few more plants for the garden, which has a few holes in it after the winter... . Another gloriously blue-sky day, thanks to the cold Mistral, which meant I was wearing a padded gilet, whilst Andy was still sporting a wooden beanie, whilst wearing shorts.. . It was a lovely, gentle, and slow morning, finishing with an amble through the pretty, and quiet streets of Saignon back to the car, with a few more plants. . When the shutters match the flowers and sky.... . Yesterday's chilly Mistral had scrubbed the sky clean and was whistling through the streets of Lourmarin, when we popped over in the afternoon... . It's such a beautiful village, and I always enjoy taking a walk around its pretty old streets, and already the roses growing up the houses are a magnificent show of colour. This one in particular... . I wonder which came first? The colour of the rose, or the shutter? Showing the way... . Such a great use of a classic old Citroën van, which clearly doesn't fancy trundling around the roads of Provence any more (a shame as they are such beautiful old vehicles)... . Provence is turning pink! . I love April here for so many reasons, but one of them is the sight of the hills and roadsides around Apt turning fuschia pink with the blossom of the Judas Trees... . It's an incredible sight, as the bright magenta flowers colour the landscape, drifts of shocking pink against the otherwise bare trees.... . In the ancient provençal language they are called 'pachin pachau', and are a wonderful sign of a shift in seasons from winter to spring... . When the sky matches the stone... . This was a little over 3 years ago, when the sky was a dark yellow, filtering the sun and almost matching the stone of the cathedral in Apt. It was an eerie sight, far more reminiscent of a sci-fi film than Provence... . It happens occasionally, when the Sirocco winds whip up from Africa, bringing the finest particles of sand with them that fill the air, and ultimately cover everything with a fine, yellow layer of dust... . Yesterday, as the winds whipped the wisteria, ripping twigs from the trees and sending bits tumbling across the terrace, the sun lost its brightness, hidden once again by a sky filled with sand... . It wasn't quite as orange as this one, which was spectacular in its strangeness, but it is still very strange, especially with violent winds that you imagine would scrub the air clean... . It's due to last a couple of days and already some events that have been planned for the weekend have been cancelled as a result. Such a shame, but totally understandable... . So this morning, instead of heading to Carpentras, where winds are predicted to hit 90kph, I'll potter into the market and pick up a few things, before hunkering down until the storm passes... . It's cherry blossom time.... . It's been a few years since I took this photo, but it's still one of my favourites from this time of year. It was a beautiful day, and I'd cycled out from Sault, up to Chalet Reynard and was heading across to the Gorge de La Nesque, through the orchards near Flassan, when I was stopped in my tracks by this view of Mont Ventoux... . A frothy sea of cherry blossoms is always a spectacular sight, but framing this iconic mountain took it to a whole new level.. . Ride and smile... . We have had recent snatches of spring and the valley is filled with wild flowers and blossom, bright with colour and rich with scent, but yesterday the wind got up again, heralding a rather unsettled week ahead.. . On really windy days, I am always happier cycling into it first, meaning that I'm pushed home at the end, happy to have that little extra help. So yesterday, I started by heading east and up to Viens, with its stunning views across to the (still snow-capped) Montagne de Lure... . The snow added a special chill to the wind, turning my optimistically bare knees, a fetching shade of red, and nipping my cheeks too. . As I rode, the wind was stripping the dry amber leaves from the oaks, making it feel much more autumnal than spring-like, but it was still beautiful and put a grin on my face.. . Spring colour... . I love this time of year when the cherry blossom starts to bloom, the balls of white blossom softening the views and offering a promise of the fruits to come... . Over the last couple of years these tender, delicate flowers have been devastated by frosts, with farmers lighting small fires beneath the trees in an effort to protect them in the coldest of nights... . This year so far, the nights have been warmer and I can only hope that continues & any bad weather doesn't risk the future crop, as the local cherry producers have had a tough time over recent years. Such a delicate, soft fruit is always at risk of damage ... . But for the time-being, I'll enjoy the sight, with the froth of white above the carpet of gold flowers, which seems even more vivid this year, thanks to the recent rains... . Across the vineyards to Gordes... . It's hard to believe that Andy is already back in Devon, but we did have a wonderful couple of days together, simply cycling, walking, chatting and just enjoying the sights, scents and colour of spring in Provence... . It is officially spring now, as we passed through the equinox leaving the darkest days of winter behind, and the cycling was just a joy, as we finally ditched the last of our winter kit, and felt the warm sunshine on our arms and knees, our faces tight with sun when we returned home... . It's that perfect time of year, when the roads are empty and the views are crisp, without the summer haze of heat and pollution, like here from a little lane below Saint Pantaleon towards Gordes. . The wisteria was waiting for me .... . It never ceases to amaze me that I can leave East Devon after lunch and be home in The Luberon by the evening. It was a bit later than normal yesterday, as I had to come back into Nice, so by the time we arrived home it was dark, with a spectacular backdrop of stars to brighten the night sky... . This morning though, the sky was blue and in the first light, I could see just how much has changed in the time I've been away. . Spring has arrived with a vengeance. The verges that were dotted with flowers when I left have exploded with colour, and on our morning cycle around the valley the vineyards were a carpet of gold and white, with orchids standing proud in the grass and even a couple of poppies dancing in the breeze too .... . But the sight that really put a smile on my face was the first wisteria bloom in full flower on the front of the house. I adore wisteria, and have long dreamed of living in a house covered in the scented, purple blooms ... . Home again tomorrow 💜.. . We've had a bit of a topsy-turvy start to the year, which has seen us spending more time apart than we have been together, which is never fun.... . In the time that I have been away, spring has kicked up a gear, and I can't wait to see it again. Andy has been keeping me going with photos of the roses starting to bud and the wisteria starting to flower on the front of the house, together with little facts about what is happening. Last night the frogs had started chattering again and today the bats are back, sleeping (and squabbling) behind the shutters during the day... . Another Sunday market to visit ... . We're spoilt for choice on Sundays during the summer, as there is always a list of places we can visit. The markets at L'Isle Sur La Sorgue and Coustellet, the brocantes and vide grenier events that pop up in villages and towns around us, and the delightful morning market at Reillanne.... . It's a very pretty place to visit on market day. Its lovely main square, filled with the colour and bustle of a traditional market, with a great selection of local food producers as well as artisans selling their work... . And once you've filled your basket, sit looking down on the square and watch the world pass by with a coffee at the Café du Cours... . Same morning, different views ... . At the moment, I'm sitting in a cafe by the sea in Sidmouth, Devon nursing a hot cup of coffee, watching the white horses and waves crashing over the rocks and Andy, who's out on the bike at home in Provence, has just sent me the photo of the sky above Gordes .... . The difference couldn't be much more stark, but both are stunning in their own way... . Happily, the storms of the weekend have left The Luberon now, and the cobalt blue skies have returned, and after the grey they seem more vibrant than ever... . This morning, he noticed the first wisteria buds on the front of the house showing delicate shades of purple, and as we sat with our coffees chatting over WhatsApp, he was being serenaded by a little Blackcap, whilst I had a blackbird singing its heart out in the back garden here... . Two of your five a day .... . I love this time of year, when the market stalls start to fill with the new season asparagus (my favourite) and the first of this year's tomatoes... . A rainbow of colours, shapes and sizes. Lumpy and bumpy, and more than a bit wonky too, but utterly delicious. A far cry from the regimented, perfectly round, almost tasteless ones, packed in.plastic at the supermarket ... . My simple rule is, the heavier the tomato, the better. The heavier ones have juice-filled flesh and almost need to be wrapped in cotton wool to get them home, without damaging them, and some favourites are the vibrant red 'Coeur de Boeuf', the golden "Ananas' and the dark, almost purple 'Noir de Crimée'.. . Don't speak with your mouth full .... . So many of the fountains near us have lumpy, bumpy additions to the beautifully carved old stonework. Not because the masons thought it added interest, but simply due to the deposits from the incredibly hard water here... . This one in Lourmarin was always my favourite. The moss and fern covered growths giving the faces the appearance of having been cursed by a malevolent spirit, turning the words they were speaking into stone.... . The growths were removed recently and somehow the fountain didn't look quite right afterwards .... . Coveting a cabanon... . I am a sucker for these beautiful old cabanons, sitting in the middle of fields all around us, surrounded by wildflowers, vines and lavender... . They come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny little huts, to two and even three storey miniature homes, and very occasionally with dovecotes built into the roof space.. . Some have been converted into beautiful little peaceful homes, some into simple, off-the-grid bolt-holes, yet most remain as they were, simply-built stone huts and shelters, home to wildlife and the echoes of the past... . We're serial renovators (13 houses so far), so our minds are always turning whenever we pass one, especially one with a view like this... . I'm not sure those two words will be featured next to each other in fashion magazines heralding this summer's niche look, but when it comes to describing Provence they're pretty much perfect.... . The fields are filled with the crisp stripes of lavender and vines, softened by the blossoms and flowers that cover the trees and hedges... . At the moment the first tender, silvery-green leaves of this year's lavender are starting to push through, and the almond trees provide the colour, but soon it will be the drifts of white cherry blossom and then the dramatic fuchsia pink of the Judas trees... . Just outside Bonnieux, this little tree sits on the corner of the road and is often later to bloom, hidden a little longer from the sun in the shade of the Luberon. And we're in Nice ... . Yesterday started with heavy cloud and watching a sea more akin to the North Cornwall coast than the Cote D'Azur. It was a slab of grey, the wind tossing it into a herd of white horses, with huge waves crashing on to the beach at Menton... . By the afternoon though, when we arrived in Nice, the sky had cleared and the bright colours of the Cours Saleya were more vivid than ever, in the February sun... . We took our chance and headed to the beach, stretching out on the stones, the sea a turquoise, with the crashing of the heavy waves lulling us into a gentle doze... . A bright spot on a grey day ... . Blossom, blue skies & Bonnieux... . Yesterday's bike ride was such a joy, with warm Spring sunshine and blue skies scrubbed clean by the Mistral. The almond trees are covered in a froth of blossom, and I found myself stopping regularly just to enjoy the views... . This was a particular favourite. Lacoste above the vines... . Yesterday afternoon, we followed the footpaths between the two hilltop villages of Bonnieux & Lacoste .. . It's a pretty walk, through the shallow bowl of land between the two villages, with beautiful views in all directions... . They are both wonderful little villages and I love the way they sit on hills opposite each other, like naughty children who have been separated and are glaring at one another from different chairs.. . In history that would have been the case, with Catholic Bonnieux being totally at odds with the views and activities of the Marquis de Sade, who lived in the Chateau at Lacoste... . But yesterday there was the biggest sign of all..... I didn't have to wrap up like the Michelin Man to go cycling! . In the depths of Winter, getting into my cycle kit is like wrapping a gift for a frenetic game of 'Pass the Parcel' at a well-attended children's party. But yesterday, I left 2 layers behind and even only wore 1 pair of gloves ... It felt as if I had been removed from a snug winter corset... . What started as just a little ride to Roussillon, turned into something a little longer, each turn of the pedal making my grin wider... . Peace and winter sunlight at Viens... . Unfortunately, Viens didn't quite look like this on Saturday, when we went up to watch the Tour de la Provence cycle race go through the village... . In fact it was hard to see anything at all through the low clouds and driving rain that made it a truly hideous day for the riders, and anyone who turned out to watch. It was such a shame, as the route they took went along some of our favourite roads and to some beautiful villages too. . There is a story that a long time ago one of the village priests had a rope from the church bells here to his bedroom, so that he could ring it, calling people to Mass before he left his bed. . The stallholders may have been few and far between at this morning's market, but the chatter was all very joyful, celebrating the rain and the fact that the river is finally flowing... . Flowers may have found their way into my basket, along with bread, croissants & pile of fruit & veg, and a coffee in the bustle & warmth of a favourite café with our eldest. .
