Rosa had lots of fun with her Tuff Tray recently. Her Daddy had the idea of setting it up in the garden with water and different cups for pouring and splashing. Rosa’s favourite thing to do at the moment is to ‘mix mix mix’ so a big mixing bowl and wooden spoon was a must. We also added mini pumpkins strips of coloured paper (the packaging from a recent @lankakade order, thank you!) She loved wrapping the paper around the pumpkins and taking cups to our garden tap to fill up and pour over the different objects. With the excitement of Halloween season and all things fall, we took the enthusiasm and transformed ot into an opportunity to explore the #stem concepts of balance and measurement. This simple provocation is one I've setup in the classroom a million different times, each one unique because I pick the materials, location and time of year based on the specific interest and skills of the current class of kiddos. They've loved exploring woth these little gourds, and rolling this giant pumpkin around the classroom, testing their strength trying to lift it, and often enticing peers to practice skills of teamwork and collaboration to lift it together. It's always so fun to see where they take an open-ended playprompt like this one, my hope is that they will weigh the gourds, compare them, maybe put them in order of height, length or weight. Maybe they'll grab a paper and record their findings, making predictions as they test out their hypotheses. Or perhaps they will cozy up on the rug and and play "roll the pumpkin" with their stuffed animals, which is exactly what one group of kiddos did 🤷♀️ That's what I love about preschoolers and my #reggioinspired #classroom, they're always helping me see the world in a new way, one I often could never have predicted, and they're always teaching me something new... Using our pumpkins I was determined to use our left over pumpkins to make some food. With the girls I made pumpkin soup and pumpkin muffins. The girls were super excited to make pumpkin soup as they really enjoy the story Pumpkin Soup. They really loved developing on their skills to cut, peel, scoop and grind. We followed the @jamieoliver roasted pumpkin soup recipe. While the soup was bubbling we started on making the pumpkin muffins. We followed the @bbcgoodfood pumpkin muffin recipe. I find baking with the girls really hard as I am not a confident baker but I am trying to do it more as it is just so beneficial for their mathematical understanding. We had such a fun afternoon. My kitchen looked like it had been ransacked by then end but it was totally worth it as the food was delicious! The girls loved the pumpkin muffins but they were only keen to have a spoonful of the soup. Yesterday we did a mixture of Halloween style because it’s still Halloween for the whole week right? We had 4 separate activities going on: 1. Pumpkin insides in a sandwich bag - both loved trying to move the seeds around inside the rest of the gunk 2. Oil and food colouring mixed to make fake blood with some spiders inside a sandwich bag - our 7 month old really took to this and was fascinated by the spiders inside 3. Our pumpkin insides with lots of Halloween porcelain figures hiding inside - our 3 year old LOVED this. She got so excited every time she found a new figure. She asked me to re-hide them 3 times! 4. Fake cobwebs with spiders - this is perfect for any destroyers (like our 7 month old). It just stretches and stretches, so he could do whatever he wanted to it and it just went with him. One of the easiest sensory activities at this time of year. My eldest has loved getting messy like this each year, and if you’re carving a pumpkin you have all the stuff already there. I just got a bowl to put all the insides in and let them do as they pleased. The 7 month old loved pulling the strings out of the bowl, while the 3 year old started by helping get the insides out of the pumpkins and then she was “making a cake” with the insides, mixing it and flattening it. She played for almost an hour with the insides. We decided to put our pumpkins in the water. We noticed them bobbing up and down, even the larger ones. This led to a discussion about floating and sinking. Our Sweet Pea was surprised to find that the pumpkins sank when filled with water, but the pups inside floated! We had great fun making huge splashes by dropping the pumpkins into the water. We listened to the different splashed that were made by the different sized pumpkins. We also noticed that the splashes were larger when we dropped the pumpkins from a greater height! Pumpkins 🎃 We have spent the morning looking at pumpkins 🎃 We started with the pumpkin life cycle (printable from @littlelearninghub and link in my bio) We loved squashing the sensory bag and pushing the pumpkin seeds around with our fingers. The before school children mixed the cards up and asked me if I noticed anything different….I have done the same on the last photo to see if they notice. We read we are going on a pumpkin hunt, a great book with the same repetitive patterns as we are going on a leaf hunt and we are going on a bear hunt. Great for them to have a go at telling the story. We then did a pumpkin wash using paintbrushes and jugs. Lots of fine motor skills being worked on (idea for adding brushes to our pumpkin wash from @samgoldsworthy_childminding). We also talked about which one was big and which one was small. We picked up 'There's a Witch in your book' by @tomfletcher yesterday. I loved that it's a hard back version. This morning, P has been really grouchy so I set up a sensory play based around the book. She loved it. We had climbing, balancing, shaking, throwing, playing peekaboo and popping bubbles. But most of all we had fun together.

May you have a Spook-tacular day and try not to eat all the sweet’s tonight! 😉 We don’t usually go trick or treating so instead, took the kids to a little Halloween event and they did some crafts and did a scavenger hunt where they got some sweets to take home.☺️ So here’s a throwback to when I created Jack and Sally from The Nightmare before Christmas using @wilddough.co the kids made the cute little ghosts and some of the pumpkins. 😊 I’m a fan of Tim Burton’s work, it’s amazing what he comes up with in his films and animations! The @wilddough.co packaging has changed since making this many moons ago but the quality still remains the same, so soft and smells amazing! Science experiment! Here's how we did it: ➡️ Clean out mini pumpkin. ➡️ Add 3 tbs of baking soda, 2 tbs of dish soap, and a few drops of food colouring. We used pink. ➡️ In a separate dish, mix 1 cup of vinegar with a few drops of food colouring. We used purple. ➡️ Pour the vinegar mixture into the pumpkin and watch the magic happen!
