Quit India Movement, mass protest movement during 1942–43 against the colonial British raj’s political and military control of India. The movement, which took place against the backdrop of World War II, was initially planned by Mahatma Gandhi and his followers in the Indian National Congress (Congress Party) as a nonviolent action. However, attempts by the British authorities to prevent the protests by arresting the Congress leaders backfired and triggered an escalation of violence that, by the end of the turmoil, resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 Indians, as well as the arrests of roughly 60,000 by the end of 1943. Though the movement was unsuccessful in its goal of forcing the immediate decolonization of India, it served as an important demonstration of anti-colonial sentiment in Indian society directed toward the British raj. On July 14, 1942, the Congress Party passed its “Quit India” resolution calling for an immediate end to British rule in India and authorizing Gandhi to lead a mass nonviolent protest movement if independence was not granted. The slogan “Quit India” was coined by mayor of Bombay (now Mumbai) Yusuf Meherally. The morning after the Quit India resolution was agreed upon in Bombay, British authorities invoked the Defense of India Act, which permitted detention without a trial, to arrest Gandhi and dozens of other leaders of the Congress Party, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Abdul Kalam Azad, and Vallabhbhai Patel. Concern for Gandhi’s age and fear of worldwide condemnation convinced the British not to jail Gandhi, and instead they confined him in the Aga Khan’s summer palace in Pune along with his wife, Kasturba, his secretary, and some followers.  #history #india #uk #britishers #colonisation #britishraj #gandhi #nehru #savarkar #quitindia #aazadi

THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE SHADOW OF THE MAHATMA This day, 155 years ago, Kastur Kapadia was born in Porbandar. At the age of 13, she was married to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and became an equal partner in his political life. When Mahatma Gandhi was arrested on 9th August, 1942, for giving a call for the British to ‘Quit India’, she decided to address the public meeting scheduled later in the day at Shivaji Park in his place, and was arrested too. #ThisDayThatYear #TodayInMumbaiHistory #Mumbai #Bombay #Maharashtra #India #History #Heritage #QuitIndia #MahatmaGandhi #Gandhiji #ManiBhavan #Kasturba #Ba #KasturbaGandhi #ShivajiPark

The Quit India movement was launched at the wrong time, did not get widespread support till Netaji asked, damaged India by giving free to the Muslim League, and needlessly, about 100,000 people suffered horrible conditions while Congress leaders lived in luxury conditions in jail. Krishna Kumar takes readers on a riveting journey through the tumultuous year of 1942 that shook the foundations of the mighty British Empire in India. With thorough research and skillful storytelling, Kumar brings to life the people, places and events that pushed British rule in India to the brink. The book sets the stage by describing the oppressive nature of British rule in India, established through deceit and maintained through racist policies, draconian laws and brute force. This colonial edifice, where the profits and produce of India financed the Raj and the British war effort abroad, came under unprecedented strain in 1942. Japan's offensive from Southeast Asia smashed British strongholds from Hong Kong to Singapore. The myth of European superiority evaporated as Japanese troops disarmed thousands of British-led Indian soldiers. By taking Burma, Japan reached India's doorstep. India had never planned defenses on its northeastern border! The British reacted with panic, bombing eastern Indian ports and planning to abandon India altogether. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Winston Churchill dispatched Sir Stafford Cripps to negotiate an agreement with Indian leaders. But these talks failed due to British unwillingness to concede real power. An enraged Congress Party launched the Quit India movement, the largest civil disobedience campaign since the 1857 uprising. Although crushed within months, it engendered a revolutionary spirit across India. Meanwhile, defeated Indian soldiers in Japanese custody broke their allegiance to the British Crown by joining the Indian National Army led by the charismatic Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Although the INA failed to liberate India, it became a beacon of hope and inspired nationalism. 1942 : When British Rule in India was Threatened by Krishna Kumar (@krishnakumarusa) Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Uk1qIn #1942WhenBritishRuleinIndiaWasThreatened #IndianHistory #BookishElf #ReadersLoveBook #WorldWarII #QuitIndiaMovement #JapaneseInvasion #BritishColonialRule #1942InIndia #IndianNationalArmy #BookReview #KrishnaKumar #WWIINarrative #BritishEmpireCollapse #QuitIndia #SoutheastAsiaCampaign

Few years in history reverberate through the ages as prolifically as 1942. Krishna Kumar’s meticulously researched work vividly resurrects that watershed year when seismic upheavals shook the foundations of the British Raj in India. He masterfully grapples with the complex interplay between the external threats posed by Japan and internal fissures exacerbated by the Quit India movement. Kumar dispels any notion that these events unfolded in isolated silos. Instead, he underscores their interconnectedness by situating domestic unrest within the larger churn induced by World War II. Kumar harnesses narrative flair to craft an engaging account that retains academic rigor. He deploys literary devices to make the past come alive. Eyewitness accounts transport the reader to the chaotic streets of Singapore and cruel jungles of Burma. The sights, sounds and smells are rendered palpable through evocative use of language. Dramatic tension is built through judicious shifts in perspective and tempo. Short staccato paragraphs convey the frenetic pace while longer passages paint introspective portraits. Kumar relies on meticulous research yet translates it into eminently readable prose that captures the uncertainties and twists of that tumultuous period. A particularly striking feature is the humanization of ordinary people frequently relegated to footnotes in imperial histories. Soldiers and civilians take center stage as complex individuals riven with doubts and dreams. Kumar movingly surfaces their voices by drawing upon memoirs, diaries and letters. Their hopes and tribulations lend poignancy while spotlighting the callousness of imperial policies. 1942 : When British Rule in India was Threatened by Krishna Kumar (@krishnakumarusa) Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Uk1qIn #1942WhenBritishRuleinIndiaWasThreatened #IndianHistory #BookishElf #ReadersLoveBook #WorldWarII #QuitIndiaMovement #JapaneseInvasion #BritishColonialRule #1942InIndia #IndianNationalArmy #BookReview #KrishnaKumar #WWIINarrative #BritishEmpireCollapse #QuitIndia #SoutheastAsiaCampaign #HistoricalEvents #ColonialHistory #IndianIndependence #1942Warfront #BritishIndia #NewBook

1942: Japanese armies reached the Northeast Borders of India after taking over Burma (Myanmar). Then, the Japanese bombed Madras, Vizag, and Calcutta. Ports on India’s East Coast were closed. Almost 100,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army and 400,000 civilians- disease-ridden and demoralized- came to India from Burma, making a tortuous journey with nearly 50-100,000 perishing while trekking through the mosquito-infested jungles. Earlier, The Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor and Malaya almost simultaneously. The British-ruled areas of Malaya, Hongkong, and Singapore surrendered quickly. Under Chatfield doctrine, the defense of these areas was the responsibility of British India. Besides, there were a large number of Indians in trade and various professions. Fearing a Japanese invasion, the British started sending their families to the interior and began planning to evacuate from India. In Feb '42, Churchill informed King George VI that 'Burma, Ceylon, Calcutta, and Madras in India and part of Australia may fall into enemy (Japan) hands.' Then, Congress launched the Quit India movement. The formation of the Indian National Army planted the seeds for the collapse of the British Empire. 1942 : When British Rule in India was Threatened by Krishna Kumar (@krishnakumarusa) Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Uk1qIn #1942WhenBritishRuleinIndiaWasThreatened #IndianHistory #BookishElf #ReadersLoveBook #WorldWarII #QuitIndiaMovement #JapaneseInvasion #BritishColonialRule #1942InIndia #IndianNationalArmy #BookReview #KrishnaKumar #WWIINarrative #BritishEmpireCollapse #QuitIndia #SoutheastAsiaCampaign #HistoricalEvents #ColonialHistory #IndianIndependence #1942Warfront #BritishIndia #NewBook #Bookstagram #BookWorm #IGBooks

1942 : When British Rule in India was Threatened by Krishna Kumar (@krishnakumarusa) Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3Uk1qIn #1942WhenBritishRuleinIndiaWasThreatened #IndianHistory #BookishElf #ReadersLoveBook #WorldWarII #QuitIndiaMovement #JapaneseInvasion #BritishColonialRule #1942InIndia #IndianNationalArmy #BookReview #KrishnaKumar #WWIINarrative #BritishEmpireCollapse #QuitIndia #SoutheastAsiaCampaign #HistoricalEvents #ColonialHistory #IndianIndependence #1942Warfront #BritishIndia #NewBook #Bookstagram #BookWorm #IGBooks #IGReads #BookAddict #ReadersCorner

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - 1869-1948 Born on the 2nd of October 1869- in what is now Gujarat (western India 🇮🇳) Moved to London in the late 1880’s to train as a lawyer. Would return to India to try and set up a law practise which didn’t work out. Gandhi would move to South Africa 🇿🇦 in the 1890’s to represent an Indian merchant in a law suit - and he lived there for 21 years. During the 2nd Boer war he volunteered to form a group of stretcher bearers (known as the natal Indian ambulance corps.) He would return to India in 1915- and helped organise peasants/farmers/ and labourers to protest against discrimination and excessive land tax. Early 1920’s: He became leader of the Indian national congress - and campaigned for easing poverty/ expanding women’s rights/ ending untouchability/ self rule. He ate simple food and fasted as a form of protest. He also led Indians in the Dandi salt March of 1930- over a salt tax (non violent peaceful protest.) 1942: Gandhi led the quit India campaign during WWII- although India fought for Britain during the war - there were some Indians who fought for the Japanese 🇯🇵 against the British 🇬🇧. 1947: India was granted independence from Britain, and it was also partitioned into east and west Pakistan 🇵🇰(campaigned for by the all India Muslim league) as well as India. 30th January 1948: Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse over claims that he supported Muslims at the expense of Hindus. His body was cremated on the banks of the Holy Jumna River. His statue in Parliament square London was unveiled in 2015 - on the centenary of his return to India from South Africa. #mahatmagandhi #india #britain #britishempire #britishraj #london #southafrica #boerwar #nonviolentprotest #protest #indiannationalcongress #selfrule #anticolonial #saltmarch #worldwartwo #quitindia #japanese #indianindependence #paritition #pakistan #eastandwestpakistan #assassinated #anniversary #jumnariver #parliamentsquare #famousperson #fasting #lawyer #subcontinent #bangladesh🇧🇩

#RevisitingHistory with the #QuitIndiaMovement Civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance were hallmarks of the Quit India Movement, a widespread protest against British oppression. Gandhi and other prominent Indians urged an immediate British departure from the continent. Despite a brutal crackdown by the colonial authorities, the movement galvanized the nation and contributed significantly to India gaining independence in 1947. The Quit India Movement stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Indian people in their pursuit of freedom. #indianindependence #freedomfighters #india #indianhistory #colonization #british #colonizers #quitindia #bombay #mahatma #mahatmagandhi #indianfreedom #historyfacts #historylovers #historybuff #historynerd #historylover #historygeek #historylesson #historyinpictures #historyteacher #historygram #historybooks #historymuseum #historymatters

Aga Khan Palace in Pune, India, emanates historical significance with its picturesque architecture and poignant link to India's struggle for freedom. Commissioned by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1892, it was built to aid the poor in the neighboring areas affected by famine. Beyond its humanitarian inception, it is entrenched in the annals of Indian history for its association with Mahatma Gandhi, India's torchbearer of non-violence and civil disobedience against British rule. The palace, a sublime blend of Islamic and Italianate architectural styles, became an emblematic site for the Indian freedom movement after Gandhi’s incarceration there. He was detained along with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi, and his secretary, Mahadev Desai, during the Quit India Movement of 1942, a significant, albeit desperate, push for the end of British colonialism. The residence, thus, turned into a prison palace, its beauty diametrically opposed to the freedom it held captive. While Gandhi's time at Aga Khan Palace was marked with austere self-discipline and persistent struggle for independence, it also bore witness to personal tragedies that befell Gandhi. It was here that Kasturba Gandhi passed away after a prolonged illness, in the palace's austere quarters, and not much later, Mahadev Desai also died. These events cast a somber hue over Gandhi's non-violent battle, adding a thick layer of sadness to the palace’s history. The Aga Khan Palace not only stands as a testament to the personal loss and political unrest Gandhi faced but also to the undying spirit of India’s resistance against the imperial yoke. The sprawling lawns and silent halls resonate with the echoes of Gandhi’s teachings of truth and non-violence. In 1969, it was fittingly donated to the Indian people by Aga Khan IV during Gandhi's birth centenary. It now houses a museum dedicated to Gandhi and his life's work, immortalizing the stories of hardships faced and sacrifices made during India’s quest for freedom. #agakhan #agakhanpalace #pune #puneindia #indianhistory #india2023 #vagabondzen #gandhi #quitindia

It was extraordinary when the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) organised a meeting of its party functionaries in Patna on November 26, Constitution Day, to reflect on the Constitution and safeguard it from the alleged onslaught of the Narendra Modi regime, and also recall the legacy of Yusuf Meherally. A great freedom fighter, he coined the iconic slogans “Simon Go Back” and “Quit India”, which were employed for the freedom movement in 1928 and 1942 respectively. Associated with Mahatma Gandhi since 1927, he participated in the freedom struggle, was imprisoned several times, founded (with others) the Congress Socialist Party (CSP), and played a crucial role during the Quit India movement. He also served as the first socialist Mayor of Bombay, now Mumbai, and Member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly. In spite of such a glorious legacy, Meherally’s name hardly figures in history textbooks and people in general remain unaware about him. Therefore, nine-time RJD MLA, former MP and minister in the Bihar government Vrishin Patel took the initiative that the party should discuss the remarkable legacy of Meherally, who was born on September 23, 1903 and breathed his last on July 2, 1950. The state president of the RJD, Jagadanand Singh, took it forward to commemorate the rich contributions of Meherally to India’s struggle for independence and shapin the idea of India, which is now endangered by the powers that be at the Centre. I had the privilege of being invited to speak on the occasion graced, among others, by the youthful leader of RJD and deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav. Read the full story by S.N. THIS DAY IN HISTORY: Mohandas Karamchand #Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar in modern-day #Gujurat. Known respectfully as Mahatma Gandhi, he played an instrumental role in the nationalist revolution of India, organizing numerous movements, like the #Khilafat-NonCooperation Movement (1919-1922), the #CivilDisobedience Movement (1930-1931) and the #QuitIndia Movement (1942-1944). He led localized peasant satyagrahas in #Champaran (1917), #Kheda (1918), and #Ahmedabad (1918), undertaking non-violent methods of resistance. His mode of resistance became an integral part of the nationalist movement led by #Congress, and is believed to have influenced the #anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and the #CivilRights Movement led by #MartinLutherKingJr. Gandhi's principles are enshrined in the Indian Constitution, primarily in the Directive Principles of State Policy. . . . . .
