Making hanging basket out of ivy… ➡️ 1 ivy from the garden I harvested a while ago and dried. Just wanted to share some progress of two of my current basket #WIPs One is my #abalone #basket #weave which I started in Feb made from the scraps of silver Broom foliage saved from going to greenwasted at my studio - feel it’s taking such nice unstructured shape now. The other is a new #randomweave I started from the young willow (I believe ?) branches foraged from the banks of the Kiewa river recently First attempt at weaving both these new styles as my normal weaving style is very structured and neat so it’s been a nice challenge stearing away from this . Random weave definitely in the early stages more so as every stick I tried to weave was disagreeing with me heavily 🤨 but coming together now so we love that 😋 #weaving

Productive day with new and familiar faces at @ardingtoncrafts new home in Bucklebury All students picked up techniques really fast and made great baskets which they’ll be able to complete at home - lots of variations in colour and pattern even with just the one weave learned. Sheltered Threshhold; 16" x 13" x 9"; layered, random weave willow and red osier dogwood. This basket will be in a CBBG exhibit @macapdx that goes up next week on March 22 and runs through June 15, 2024. Opening reception is April 6 from 1-3pm. We harvested the Arctic willow base material from the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild's plot at @ourtablecooperative and the red osier is from a cooperative agreement between @hoytarboretum and the CBBG that allowed CBBG members to glean from some of the arboretum's trim piles - so this basket definitely belongs in a CBBG show! Random weave experiment. I dipped the small willow basket in Thai kozo pulp (4th photo) last summer, but thought it needed something more... So I random wove a variety of wild willows, osiers, (and something else with buds that I couldn't identify), harvested from private land on Sauvie Island in early January. The buds and colors really attracted me - and weaving them over the pulp-dipped basket base felt like Spring emerging from winter snow.
