#ThisWeekintheWoods Bald eagle chicks are growing quickly, and by this point, many have shed their white baby fuzz. The eaglet in this nest (photographed with a high magnification lens from across a marsh, to avoid stressing the birds) has mostly transitioned to its second, dark down phase, except that it’s still sporting a snazzy white hairdo. Eagle nests are massive stick structures, with some softer materials mixed in. They measure approximately 4 to 6 feet in diameter, can be a few feet deep, and weigh 1,000 pounds or more. This photo was taken of my front door. The nest shown was recently made within a wreath I have there. I have heard of birds creating nests in wreaths. Commonly this occurs in doors that are rarely used. What makes this unusual to me is how frequently I use this door and have so since the nest’s creation. Trust is so important to me. Cycling out to a peninsula, the roadside is a riot of wildflower colour. Daisies, dandelions and marsh marigolds erupt with butterflies along the verges. Abandoning my bike at the side of the road, I trample through heather to sit on a rock loch side where curlew gurgle. The croft is a tiny pebble in the landscape, its roof matching the peat and spent heather. On the way to the beach, the rose-gold reeds catch the sunlight, the heat a gossamer haze. Down at the coast I almost stumble on an oystercatcher nest. Tangled on the strandline are two eggs. It is precariously close to the high-tide mark, and I fear its position is not far enough up the beach to survive the new moon tide. They are probably inexperienced first-time parents; they didn't even sound their peeping alarm call to warn me I was about to step on their eggs. I stop just in time. Towards the headland, a second nest is barely a scrape in the sand; these parents relying on their eggs to resemble scattered pebbles. At least they circle overhead, and I know I must be near. In a game of grandmothers footsteps, I slow down my pace to avoid any accidental missteps. Good luck OCs, and please watch out for wader nests 💚

Well it's raining again, not that I'm surprised anymore 🤷♀️ My fairy garden is enjoying it for the most part, the bluebells have lasted longer than usual and I still have tulips popping up in random places 🌷 The wisteria however is not as good this year so maybe it's fed up with 'wet feet' the same as me ! It’s that exciting time of year when birds in New England are nesting or preparing to nest, and us photographers have chances capture the associated bird behavior, which is always special. Here are a few images of nesting birds I’ve had a chance to photograph close to home over the past couple years. 1) Pileated Woodpecker, 2) Tree Swallow, 3) Eastern Bluebird, 4) Barn Swallow (in a barn). 5) is a Red-bellied Woodpecker nest I found on a walk a few days ago! Just remember whether you are photographing or just observing nesting birds, be super sensitive to the birds’ well-being. Pay close attention to their behavior, and make sure you are at a distance where the birds are comfortable approaching to swap incubation duties or make food deliveries to chicks.
