For those of you who have been around awhile you probably remember when we started this recycled bottle project months (years?) ago. It started with @amsaley sorting through the recycling center at @kazakitchen in Lilongwe. Each bottle was individually cut + sanded by a lady named Jennifer + her team. The bottles then sat in our storeroom, office, laundry area for far too long before I got my act together to design the bottle wall for the Nook. Our building team at Mushroom Farm cut pieces of metal rod, made small round wooden circles so we could easily stack the bottles + put together a frame to hold everything together. 272 wine bottles were recycled in this project so far + we need 200 more…..my math went wrong somewhere, clearly 😂 What could have been labeled waste has been turned into something beautiful because of some pretty dedicated individuals. The Mill District Local Art Gallery is pleased to highlight Donna Roy from South Hadley. Donna Roy is a Western Massachusetts native who began her love of painting while studying privately with a local oil painter when she was ten years old. During weekly studio sessions, she learned traditional foundations of composition, perspective, color theory and design. This foundation cemented her love for painting and her creative journey. A graduate of UMASS with a BFA, Donna continued her exploration of art through several mediums, including oil, acrylic, gouache, glass enamel painting, stained glass, and glass fusing. During the last ten years, she developed a line of post-consumer glass and copper garden sculptures that are available online. Learning to thrive in a pandemic, Donna pushed her passion for color and full circle and began to work in soft pastels and gouache. Addicted to vibrant color and energetic marks, her paintings center on New England landscapes and local natural beauty. Her award-winning paintings have been exhibited in local, national, and international juried shows. These days, you will find Donna visiting local farms, rivers, and trails with her trusty camera in search of inspiration, painting Plein Air, or in her small home studio creating paintings inspired by the beautiful New England character.
