CT Vivian: “He was a leading member of the Freedom Riders, a loose collection of activists who took rode interstate buses to protest segregated bus terminals — and often suffered beatings and arrests as a result. Beginning in 1963, he served as the national director of affiliates for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In that role, he became a key ally of Martin Luther King Jr. and a major organizer of civil rights actions across the South. The only child of Robert Cordie and Euzetta Tindell Vivian, young Cordy Tindell (“C.T.”) moved to Macomb, Illinois with his mother and grandmother in 1930. The women chose Macomb because it had non-segregated schools and a local college. After graduating from Macomb High School in 1942 where he had been an active student leader, Vivian began a stint at Western Illinois University. . In 1947, Vivian participated in his first non-violent action to end segregation at lunch counters in Peoria. But because of his strong religious upbringing and beliefs, he says he was called to a life in the ministry. However, he saw no separation between civil rights, faith and ministry because “racism is a moral issue.” With the help of his church, he enrolled in American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville in 1955. . His civil rights work continued for a half century, becoming the director of the Urban Training Center for Christian Mission in Chicago in 1966 and dean of the Shaw University Divinity School in Raleigh, N.C., in 1972. . He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Barack Obama in 2013. The Rev. C.T. Vivian, died on July 17, 2020 at his home in Atlanta. Cordy Tindell "CT" Vivian who was major force during the civil rights movement was born today July 30th. A distinguished minister, author, organizer and the lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr., Vivan was a leader on the Freedom Rides from Montgomery, Alabama, to Jackson, Mississippi in 1961. His work with voter registration in Selma, Alabama helped galvanize support for change when images (video here) of Vivian being beaten by a defiant Sheriff Jim Clark, until blood dripped off his chin, caused public outcry. “We will register to vote because as citizens of the United States we have the right to do it," Vivian told the sheriff. Vivian created a college readiness program to help care for children kicked out of school for protesting racism. This program was used as a guide for the US Department of Education creation of Upward Bound, which was designed to improve high school and college graduation rates for students in underserved communities. In a recorded interview for the honor of President Obama awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, Vivian said "Do what you can do and do it well, but always ask your question: Is it serving people?" Whilst watching the funeral service of the late, great Rev. C.T. Vivian, my aunt asked me whether old footage of the type of hate, discrimination and violence suffered by Representative John Lewis and Rev. Vivian pulled me into objective ruminations about abject hate, as it pulled her. In awestruck wonder, we tried to synthesize how the racist bad-actors of that day -and of this day- had so much room for such visceral, intense, consuming hate...simply...because..of...SKIN COLOUR. It boggles the mind and it continues to persist. In stark contrast, these militant soldiers of God, these justice sharp shooters, these love assassins literally turned the cheek, giving their minds, bodies, blood and sweat for the cause of righteousness. They were stronger than the punches and police buttons, which still rain down on the innocent. They were stronger than the bars and chains of our would-be oppressors. Their works are louder and more enduring than the raucous vitriol that we can still hear in the fanged jaws of wicked politicians and crooked coppers of today. Let their labour of love evermore speak to and embolden our hearts. Let us hear the clarion call to action, to march, to vote, to run, to stand, to make "good trouble." Only then are we able to, in Rev. Within hours of each other and not too far apart in Atlanta, two pillars of the civil rights movement joined the ancestors. The Rev. C.T. Vivian, 95, was the first to go and later on Friday, Rep. John Lewis, 80, followed him. Their paths to the pantheon of social justice as freedom fighters converged in 1959 in Nashville, Tennessee where Lewis was a student and with Vivian they studied civil disobedience and nonviolent protest under the Rev. James Lawson. Both survived vicious attacks and personal injury during their crusade for social justice, and each eventually soared in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s orbit, carving their own impressive niches in the nation’s history.
