This massive statue was installed in 1979, as a response to a local radio station owner working to bring in travelers to Blue Earth from the newly-built interstate 90, which bypassed the town. 👹 Day 5 of my road trip was in Illinois, and I was greeted by the Big Muddy Monster! . On my way to scoping out eclipse viewing sites, I found this bronze statue. In 2023 the city of Murphysboro in southern Illinois installed this 9-foot-tall statue of a mud-covered Bigfoot. It commemorates the 50th anniversary of the last time this monster was seen. This statue was modeled from an official police report that was filed, where they described the monster as covered with mud, was screaming and had a foul smell. Rex lives at this bowling alley, but this land used to be part of an amusement park called Kiddieland, which was owned by carnival ride company Theel Manufacturing. Rex was built in 1977 and is 25 feet tall! Rex was considered a local landmark when Kiddieland was demolished, so when the bowling alley was built next to it in 2002, Rex stayed and became the mascot of the bowling alley. . Future House - Willingboro, NJ This one was pinned on my google map for a really long time. I didn’t recall that it landed inside of a park, so it was surprising to be in such a crowded place to check out a futuro. . The poor thing is pretty beat down. I wasn’t tall enough to get a look inside the broken out windows with my camera. . This model has fewer windows than the others I’ve seen. The Colonial Theatre (originally The Colonial Opera House) opened in 1903, and was a popular venue for vaudeville acts and movies for the early 20th century. In 1917 Harry Houdini preformed his famous safe escape act on stage, but unarguably the most famous milestone for the theater was in 1958 when featured as a filming location for SciFi classic The Blob staring Steve McQueen. Since 1999 every July The Colonial hots Blobfest. A three day celebration of the 1958 film, including a recreation of the “runout” scene, a street fair, screenings of The Blob, and more. In 1799 Conrad Reed (the son of John Reed) discovered a large “yellow rock” in the creek running through his family’s property. Brought home, the family used rock as a decorative doorstop for three years until a visiting jeweler noticed it and purchased the “yellow rock” from the Reeds for $3.50. Once realizing his mistake, John Reed started mining his property discovering more gold. Ocean City New Jersey’s earliest roots can be dated back to Native American fishing camps, 1700s fresh whale storage, & 1800s cattle grazing. On the way home from Sherman yesterday we made a stop at the Aurora cemetery to check out the burial site of the alien that crashed nearby in 1897. The Haines Shoe House was built in 1948 by shoe salesman Mahlon Nathaniel Haines as a way to advertise his shoe company. It was originally used as a tourist vacation rental up until Haines’ death in 1962. For the next 60 years the house was transformed into an ice cream parlor and tourist attraction with tours given. Over that time the house had a number of owners and varied in maintenance. Built in 1926, the Brigantine Lighthouse was originally constructed as a roadside attraction to draw in potential new real estate customers who frequented Atlantic City. In the 1930’s the lighthouse was used as the town’s police station and jail, followed by a gift shop in the 70’s, and then a town museum until the mid-90s when it fell into disrepair. In 1995 a group of volunteers took it upon themselves to refurbish the structure and make it look beautiful once again. Today the lighthouse still welcomes visitors and townsfolk entering the island.
