The Northern Harrier is especially designed for silent hunting: Its long, broad wings allow it to cruise low, with minimal flapping, and it moves slowly for a hawk. They hunt using their ears as well as their eyes, and to help them they’ve evolved a special circular arrangement of stiff feathers on their face that collects the sounds of rustling creatures and focuses them on the bird’s ears. These “facial discs” are rare in hawks but commonplace in owls, and if you perceive something owlish in the harrier’s face, that’s why. Unlike owls, though, Northern Harriers are bold enough to hunt during the day, cruising over wetlands, grasslands, prairies, fields, or anywhere else little animals are trying to use vegetation to hide. When it spots its prey—a mouse, or a vole, or a snake, or maybe a duck or shorebird—it uses its long tail like an aerial rudder to maneuver quickly into position to pounce #birdphotoshow #raptors  #raptorsofinstagram  #bird_extreme  #bird_perfection  #zoomedinbirds  #bird  #birdsofinstagram  #birding  #bestbirdshots  #bitdlovers  #birdwatching  #birdwatchers  #birds_topnotch  #birdingdaily #romwpy

The ruddy turnstone is a fascinating bird species found all over the world, from the Arctic tundra to the beaches of the Caribbean. What sets them apart from other shorebirds is their colorful feather pattern and their peculiar habit of flipping stones and turning them over to find food underneath. The name "ruddy turnstone" comes from this behavior, which makes them stand out in the bird-watching community. The "ruddy" part of their name refers to their reddish-brown feathers, while "turnstone" is seen in their habit of flipping stones over. Overall, these birds are an excellent example of nature's wonders and quirks, proving that there's always something new to discover in the animal kingdom. Some magical morels for your Monday? 🍄 Agorastos Papatsanis composes a fairy tale scene in the forests of Mount Olympus. Enjoying the interplay between fungi and fairy tales, Agorastos wanted to create a magical scene. He waited for the sun to filter through the trees and light the water in the background, then used a wide-angle lens and flashes to highlight the morels’ labyrinthine forms. Morels are regarded as gastronomic treasures in many parts of the world because they are difficult to cultivate, yet in some forests they flourish naturally. There's less than one month left to experience the extraordinary, surprising glimpses of life on our planet captured in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, closing on April 23. #ROMWPY 📸: The magical morels by Agorastos Papatsanis, Greece

Mentally, we're basking in the sun with this precious cub on this stormy #InternationalPolarBearDay. Martin watched this polar bear cub playing in a mass of fireweed on the coast of Hudson Bay, Canada. Every so often the cub would take a break from its fun, stand on its hind legs and poke its head up above the high flowers to look for its mother. Wanting to capture the world from the cub’s angle, Martin placed his camera – in an underwater housing, for protection against investigating bears – at ground level among the fireweed. He then waited patiently a safe distance away with a remote trigger. Not being able to see exactly what was happening, Martin had to judge just the right moment when the bear would pop up in the camera frame. Catch more precious, awe-inspiring and thought-provoking moments in Wildlife Photographer of the Year, on now until April 23, 2023. #ROMWPY 📸: Among the flowers by Martin Gregus, Canada

The American Kestrel is North America's smallest falcon. It is one of my favourite raptors as it has pretty markings and is colourful. Size-wise, it is like a mourning dove. I would love to have more pictures of but it isn't easy because the bird is skittish and smart, and also not terribly common. There are 66 percent fewer kestrels than there were in 1966 in the whole of America, Canada, and Mexico. Many possible factors why include insecticide affecting their food source of insects, poisoning due to DDT in the past, habitat loss, predation by other raptors, and disease such as West Nile. Kestrels like open to semi-open areas such as fields, desert, or forests clearings. They hunt by swooping down on prey from high points. Even as it was keeping its distance from me, this male kestrel was hunting for mice and bugs in the field from top of the fence and this tree stump. Merganser in flight! The first formal description of the common merganser was by Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758. He introduced the current binomial name Mergus merganser. The genus name is a Latin word used by Pliny and other Roman authors to refer to an unspecified waterbird, and merganser is derived from mergus and anser, Latin for "goose". ©️Jonathan Gazze // 📷 Shot on @canonusa R5 70-200 f2.8L at 1/2500, iso 200, f2.8 #Nature #Toronto #snowyowl #snowyowls #snowyowlsofinstagram #ontario #canada #owl #wildlife #raptor #wildlifephotography #wildlifeonearth #wildlifephotographer #raptors #barnowl #birding #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography #torontobirds #torontobirding #explorecanada #cangeo #natgeo #romwpyon #yourshotphotographer #nofilter #blogto #romwpy

It was perfectly suited for the environment – unlike Anand, who followed a fitness regime in preparation for the high altitude and cold temperatures. Snow leopards live in some of the most extreme habitats in the world. They are now classed as vulnerable. Threats include climate change, mining, and hunting of both the snow leopards and their prey. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR AT THE ROM IN TORONTO The longest-running and most prestigious annual nature photography competition in the world, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, is on view at the Royal Ontario Museum! The exhibition recognizes the world's best nature photography and has done so every year since 1965. Each year, aspiring photographers of all ages and skill levels submit tens of thousands of images in the annual international competition. Organized by the Natural History Museum in London, UK, almost one hundred remarkable images from this year's competition — the best of the best — is on view now! Experience our world in vivid detail and see some of the most extraordinary species in ways you never imagined. Each photograph is back lit, providing exquisite quality and depth. Through the camera's lens, viewers become witnesses to the lives animals live and the challenges they face. Emotive, surprising glimpses of life on our planet are showcased through exceptional talent, technical expertise, and the perfectly captured moment. The competition uses photography to celebrate the wonderful diversity of life, to inspire and inform, and to create advocates for the planet. It champions ethical wildlife photography, rewarding truthful representations of nature that display respect for animals and the environment, and calls attention to the beauty and fragility of this world. The exhibition is on view through April 23, 2023, at the Royal Ontario Museum at 100 Queen’s Park, Toronto. If anyone asks, we'll be taking a cue from this wren until sometime in early January: semi-horizontal and listening for approaching snacks. 🍪 #ROMWPY stories: Knowing it would disappear into the forest if approached, photographer Nick Kanakis found a clear patch of leaf litter and waited while this young grey-breasted wood wren foraged. Sure enough, the little bird hopped into the frame, pressing its ear to the ground to listen for small insects. Grey-breasted wood wrens are ground-dwelling birds, often heard but not seen. They broadcast loud, melodious songs and rasping calls while hidden in the undergrowth. Jose Fragozo captures the contrast between the natural world and human infrastructure. Keeping his camera steady in the moving vehicle, Jose followed the giraffe. Dwarfed by the giant pillars of Kenya’s new Standard Gauge Railway, the grey blocks contrast with the unmistakable pattern of nature’s tallest land mammal. Around the world, human development increasingly encroaches on the range and habitats of animals. Though this stretch of railway running through Nairobi National Park is raised on giant columns, allowing animals access beneath, this picture is symbolic of how the space for wildlife continues to be squeezed. 📸: The disappearing giraffe by Jose Fragozo, Portugal

Binoculars revealed polar bears – over 20 in total – exploring the ghost town. Dmitry used a low-noise drone to document the surreal experience. Extremely inquisitive, polar bears will investigate abandoned structures for potential food. With climate change reducing sea ice, hunting is becoming increasingly difficult, pushing these bears closer to human settlements to scavenge. 📸: Polar frame by Dmitry Kokh, Russia

Great egret preening and stalking prey in a marsh in the Humber River, #Toronto, #Ontario, #Canada. Located in the heart of Canada's largest metropolis, the Humber is a refuge for wildlife. The pristinely white Great Egret gets even more dressed up for the breeding season. A patch of skin on its face turns neon green, and long plumes grow from its back. Called aigrettes, those plumes were the bane of egrets in the late nineteenth century, when such adornments were prized for ladies’ hats. Great Egrets fly slowly but powerfully: with just two wingbeats per second their cruising speed is around 25 miles an hour. Though it mainly hunts while wading, the Great Egret occasionally swims to capture prey or hovers over the water and spears fish and frogs with its dagger-like beak. The oldest known Great Egret was 22 years, 10 months old and was banded in Ohio. The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers. #bird #birds #naturephotography #shareCanGeo #birdsofinstagram #CBCyourGTA #yourshotPhotographer #NatGeo #urbanwildlife #wildlife @audubonsociety #audubonphotographyawards #romtoronto #romwpy #cbctoronto

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the 2021 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit at the ROM. Year after year I’ve found inspiration from these collections, and they’ve helped motivate me to better my own work. Deciding to return to college was a large step towards improvement, as it provided a way to combine my love for science and media, and to gain experience in those fields. As with most self-improvement journeys, there’s usually some road blocks along the way. In this case, one of those obstacles being that we were tasked with creating an online post, but later finding out that we weren’t able to take pictures of the work on display (due to copyright laws). So that brings us back to the image before you. A few years ago, I had entered this photo into the WPY contest, since it was one of my first really good pictures. I wasn’t expecting to place, but figured it was worth a shot. I didn’t realize until much later that it was a worldwide contest, and that there were children out there with much more experience taking pictures that I still aspire to one day shoot. Needless to say, I was humbled when I first saw the top images, but it was still a great learning opportunity. Hopefully in the future I’ll be able to score a little higher, or at least have the opportunity to view a friend or colleague’s work hanging on those walls • • • #evc2022 #scicomm #nhm_wpy #WildlifePhotographerOfTheYear #romwpy #WomenInWildlifePhotography #GreatSpangledFritillary #OntarioNaturePhotography #CanonT5

The stars aligned this week and I was able to sit on my deck and watch a pair of Baltimore Orioles forage in my neighbour’s cherry tree while it was in full bloom. Fondly known as Dantita, this Baird’s tapir was photographed at the foothills of Braulio Carrillo National Park, close to San José in central Costa Rica. Known as ‘gardeners of the forest’, they are extremely important to their natural habitat, with some seeds only germinating after passing through the tapir. Due to threats from deforestation and hunting, there are estimated to be only 6,000 individuals left in the wild. Conservation groups such as Proyecto Tapir Nicaragua and Nai Conservation have been set up to work closely with local communities to promote the importance of preserving the land and protecting an endangered species. #EndangeredSpeciesDay #ROMWPY celebrates our beautiful planet and encourages us all to think differently about our impact on our shared home. Don't miss your chance to see it before it closes on May 29. 📸: Peek a boo by Michiel Van Noppen, The Netherlands.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and mother figures who've always got our backs. ❤️ #ROMWPY Stories: This herd of elephants closed ranks, pushing their young into the middle of the group for protection. A bull elephant had been trying to separate a newborn calf from its mother. Peter was photographing the herd in Addo Elephant Reserve, South Africa, when the newborn let out a shriek. The herd reacted instantly – blowing loud calls, flapping ears and then surrounding the young and reaching out their trunks for reassurance. Elephants create bonds that last a lifetime, and they can show emotions from love to anger. Peter feels ‘There is something magical and beautiful when you observe elephants – it touches your soul and pulls at your heartstrings.’ 📸: Bonds of love by Peter Delaney, Ireland / South Africa

This tree had some interesting bark.
