With this winter storm that brought snow to Southern California, at one point our mountain community was left without electricity for 38 hours. With all concern for those affected, the unplugged house was one of the best events that happened to me lately. At first – a feeling of lost direction, canceling plans grateful to ‘force majeure’ provision in contracts. Then comes almost forgotten, that state vaguely reminiscing childhood, in which time stops, you have just a couple of options: pen and paper, a face-to-face conversation. That tiny tingling sensation of ongoing buzz disappears eventually. Can’t help but notice the effect of physical and emotional body cells restructure. My inspiration for the visual concept is Benoit Mandelbrot’s ideas (mathematician and polymath), especially regarding what he labeled as “the art of roughness” of physical phenomena and “the uncontrolled element in life”. I am interested in his theory of ‘roughness and self similarity’ in nature, and I relate to his thoughts, ‘people want to see patterns in the world. It is how we evolved.’

There is an eternal dialogue in me between figurative and abstract so much that I agree to this polarity and venture into something I call post-disciplinary, staying open for anything to happen. These though, are from around ten years ago, when I had been looking for characters.

It is funny now, since we were 3,5 days away even from Lhasa, on roads that we sometimes had to fix ourselves by throwing rocks to fortify the ground. But then I was serious and from all places insisted on Paris! In the morning of that night we were evacuated to a, relatively speaking, lower ground, to a Darchen village. It was a relief.
