Picture this: A zooplankton's stomach filled with #plastics instead of nutritious plankton. The result? Deprivation of the essential nutrients vital for their survival. 🦐 It's not just about hunger. It's about the ripple effect on the entire marine food web, and eventually our own protein sources. Recent studies have raised concerns, linking the ingestion of microplastics to reproductive issues, behaviour changes and inflammation. As plastic pollution increases, we need to take action to keep these harmful particles out of our oceans. The solution starts at the source. By understanding where microplastics come from, and collecting more size data, we can better identify solutions. Science and community-driven research can help to unravel the mystery. YOU can help to stop #plasticpollution at the source by running a #communityscience project to collect local data. ✨🗑️ BULK PICK UP🗑️✨ . This past weekend we had our first cleanup of 2024 collecting 400lbs of trash/debris. We launched from the bonnet house and cleaned along the waterways and in the mangroves. . Mangroves forest can be found along the coast lines of tropical and subtropical environments like Florida. . Mangrove Forest and their prop root systems protect the coast line from erosion caused by storm surge, tides, currents and waves, and as we found trash. . They are also safe heavens for smaller organism looking for food and shelter from predators. . Within a Mangrove Trees life (est25yrs) removes around 308kgs of CO2 from our atmosphere. That’s more that’s around 10x more than most mature tropical forests. . 🌊Save The Wave🌊 Eine unserer WOA-Projektgruppen arbeitet fleißig an der Weiterentwicklung ihrer Idee eines Filmes über Meeresschutzgebiete🪸. Es geht um die Frage inwiefern diese Schutzgebiete auch wirklich schützen und um ihre persönliche Geschichte. Dazu hatten sie einen Workshop mit @tompuskeiler.film einem Filmstudent aus Darmstadt, der ihnen ganz grundlegende Tools und Strukturen zum Drehbuch schreiben an die Hand gegeben hat. Jetzt kann unsere Save The Wave🌊 Gruppe ihre Arbeit weiter aufnehmen.
