Seeing our son’s little feet stick out from under the curtain of the confessional moved me to tears. Any time our children receive a sacrament I can’t help but get emotional. I always think of the quote above when we reach this stage. • My husband & I start at the beginning, years of formation have taken place as our faith & educating them about it is a daily encounter. Its a huge milestone, another step in our faith that will shape their lives. The joy in our hearts is indescribable! • It’s not like what I experienced growing up. Sacrament prep unfortunately for me was a couple months before in a CCD class I took once a week, which unfortunately barely touched what I should’ve learned. The overall mentality was just another “Catholic thing to check off the list”. It wasn’t until years later my parents knew the weight & responsibility a parent has to Catechize their children & I thank God for that. Months before Joseph was to arrive we inquired with our priest about baptism. We’ve only been attending our new parish for a short time now. Canon was very informative & excited to welcome our newest child to the church. He let us know according to Code of Canon Law, 867 SS1 it’s our duty as parents to get him baptized within at least 3 weeks of birth. • Coming back to tradition these last several years, this was news to us. Even after 3 children, no priest had ever told us this. But we were glad Canon informed us. It let us know as parents the urgency & importance of guiding this new life, this sweet precious soul that we’ve been gifted from God. • When Joseph started to shows signs of seizing the day he was born & we ended up in ER that night, we started trying to call any priest we could get ahold of. Unfortunately that wasn’t as easy as we thought. Since we travel to the TLM every week, we were trying to get ahold of any priest even within the area so we could make sure our son was baptized God forbid the worst we thought might happen. Phone call after phone call, we were met with dead ends. Which did not calm our already anxious minds & hearts. • Thankfully we got ahold of one our friends at our parish, who gave us direct contact info with our priest. Our son was going to be life flighted within the area of our parish anyways so it seemed providential to get ahold of him. Our priest also instructed Patrick that if something should happen before he get there, Patrick could & should baptize him. God bless our priest, who had already been up for hours celebrating midnight Mass for the Christmas Eve Midnight High Mass. He told us to stay in contact & he would be ready & waiting for when Joseph arrived at the hospital. 🥹🙏🏽❤️🔥 • The moment Canon walked into our room I wanted to cry. Back to the Seven Sacraments window at Doddiscombleigh in Devon and the Last Rites. Gathered around the dying man is his wife and three tonsured clerical figures. The priest places the Eucharist on the man's tongue whilst holding a paten under his chin to ensure no crumbs are lost. Behind him another holds a torch and the third bears a small metal box known as a chrismatory in which holy oils of anointment are kept. The panel bears a slightly damaged Latin label ‘extrema unctio’. In fact extreme unction was one of three rites performed for the sick - visitation, extreme unction, and communion or the viaticum (food for the final journey and generally only given to those at death’s door). The scene here depicts the final act of the priest’s visit. Before offering the eucharist the priest would have blessed and sprinkled him with holy water. Then he would have exhorted him to trust in God. After making his confession and receiving absolution the sick person kissed the crucifix. The priest then anointed with oil, making the sign of the cross on the eyes, ears, lips, nostrils, hands, feet, and back. Further prayers included the valedictory ‘Go, Christian soul, out of this world’. Things I love about this scene: the flower pattern on the bedspread; the tub chair on the chequered tiles; the fact that the sick man and his wife are clearly the same couple seen in earlier panels. The window was restored in 1762 by Peter Coles, possibly a London glazier. To the right of the wife’s head he has signed the pane ‘Pr Coles, Glazr Done this Window, March 1762, whom God Preserve, amen.’ Another Seven Sacraments window produced by the Exeter atelier that made the Doddi window survives, in part, at Crudwell church in Wiltshire. The extreme unction panel is clearly based on the same template, though the Crudwell master’s heads are painted in a softer style, being ‘doll-like and melancholy’ with ‘prominent eyelashes’ and ‘exaggeratedly full lips’ (Evans and Brooks). M Leuven @m.leuven has acquired a 15th-century drawing from the circle of Rogier van der Weyden. 'The Swooning of the Blessed Virgin and two Marys' (c. 1458-1469) was previously on long-term loan to M from 2011 to 2017. It is the first time that M has been able to add a 15th-century drawing to its Prints and Drawings Cabinet, a sub-collection that contains over 22,000 works. The drawing will be shown in the museum’s new collection presentation in 2024. This drawing depicts the swooning of the Blessed Virgin. She is supported by John and the two Marys complete the scene. The same motif is found in Rogier van der Weyden’s 'Triptych of the Seven Sacraments', part of the @kmska_museum collection and on loan to M between 2009 and 2022. The poses of the pensive Virgin and John, the facial expressions and the draped garments are rendered in an almost identical fashion. . Just started this painting tonight, it's the last of my Seven Sacraments paintings for my solo exhibition at Phoenix Art Space in the Window Gallery, PV 1st September, on for three weeks. This Sacrament is 'Confirmation' whereby I received the Holy Spirit and took on a saints name. Well, I thought I was going to see small flames appear above all our heads during the service, slightly confused when no flame appeared. Anyway, my mum and I had recently watched the movie about St Bernadette, as did all the other 200 girls in my year, so we all took the name of Bernadette for our confirmation name, Cardinal Hume must have been exhausted exclaiming this same name over and over, at least the boys had the 12 disciples name! ( Cardinals bestowed this Sacrament as it was so Holy, hence the red of the Cardinals) My mum had also taken this name, so this is the beginnings of Bernadette which will be embellished with 70s wallpaper as a nod to when we watched the movie. Confirmation is the third Sacrament in a trilogy of the Seven Sacraments in being indoctrined and fully a member of the Catholic Church, an affirmation, a confirmation. 🌹Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene.🌹 Mary Magdalene was born in the town of Magdala, located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, in what is now modern-day Israel. According to the Gospels, Mary Magdalene was possessed by seven demons before she encountered Jesus. Jesus healed her and cast out the demons, after which she became one of his devoted followers. This is a significant event that emphasizes her profound transformation and her dedication to Jesus. Mary Magdalene became one of Jesus' closest disciples and traveled with him and the other disciples during his ministry. She is mentioned several times in the Gospels as being present with Jesus and the other women who supported his ministry. Mary Magdalene is one of the women who stood by Jesus during his crucifixion. She witnessed his death and burial, and along with other women, she visited the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. It was at the tomb that she became the first person to see the risen Jesus after his resurrection. This pivotal event is considered a significant moment in Christian history. After encountering the risen Christ, Mary Magdalene was instructed by Jesus to inform the other disciples about his resurrection. She played a crucial role as a witness to the resurrection, which became foundational to the Catholic faith. I grew up with this fabulous Priest, he was a good guy amongst the bad. My mum was distraught when he left the priesthood and got married AND had three children! These paintings are about the loss of my mum and my memories via the Seven Sacraments, this Sacrament is about loss. hope, love, if only and wtf. It's a very large painting, bigger than our dinner table at home. This is the table we ate at, played board games, wrote out bills, did homework, cried, had birthday cakes, made to sit to finish that horrible piece of liver and onions, I never did finish it!!!! WIP Continuing the Seven Sacraments as will be showing them all as a solo exhibition at Phoenix Window Gallery in September. I have been working on Confession as one of the Seven Sacraments to be shown. My confession and sin, according to the Catholic Church was conceiving a child out of wedlock. This is my beautiful joy of having a child that is apparently a sin. I love my children, they are my life, my everything. I have loved nothing more than being a mother, so, if this was borne out of sin, so be it. My children are my world and I cannot believe that sin has brought me so much joy. Nicolas Poussin’s “Seven Sacraments” represents each of the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, Reconciliation, Holy Orders, Holy Eucharist, and Extreme Unction. He first painted a series of Seven Sacraments for his close friend, the Papal Librarian, Cassiano dal Pozzo from 1637 to 1640. He painted a second series for his other close friend, the French ambassador to the Papal Court, Paul Freart de Chantelou from 1644 to 1648. “Poussin’s aim in painting the series was to convey the solemn nature and religious learning within each rite.” In his painting of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, called “Penance,” Poussin illustrates this sacrament with a familiar story from the Gospels, the feast in the house of Levi. Christ was invited to a feast in the house of the priest Levi, where a penitent woman washes His feet with her tears and wipes them with her hair. Christ contrasts the woman freely washing His feet with her tears out of love with the high priest, whose feet are washed out of obligation by a servant (probably a slave). When you want to look like you’ve got it all together. Today at Mass I was not feeling like I had it together. My son was having a tantrum. It’s not his fault. He missed his nap because of a pediatrician appointment and I didn’t bring enough snacks to tie him over until lunch. I usually go to noon Mass with no problems, but today, I did not have it together and the ramifications were apparent, shall we say. But some parishioners were kind and approached me after Mass giving me encouragement and affirmation. We don’t have to pretend to have it all together when we approach Jesus. He knows when we don’t have it together. But like these kind parishioners, he approaches us in our frazzled state, in our frustrations and disappointments with ourselves with love.
