Book Review: “Once upon a Wicked Christmas” by Shirley Shadow ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars I downloaded this whilst it was available for free just before Christmas as I was interested to see how it compared to the other book I proofread prior to this in Shirley’s “Wicked Rakes” series. I thought the series had shown a lot of potential but wasn’t too sold by the first one and was put off by some typos which had got past the editors. This is a prequel and can be read as a stand alone and I was pleasantly surprised by how much more I enjoyed this story. The authors writing style and storytelling has become a lot more polished, the storyline didn’t feel as rushed as the first book and the spicy love scenes were woven in nicely with the rest of the text. The characters are much more relatable and well rounded and the action is paced just right. I’ve rounded it up to 4 stars but there were still about 6-7 tiny errors/typos that made it through so I’d probably rate it 3.5 overall. When I get chance I will give it a secondary reading so I can send a list of the mistakes spotter to the author like I did previously. Book Review: “Earl of passion” by Shirley Shadow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was given an advanced copy of this by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. So, this is Shirley Shadow’s debut novel, “Earl of Passion” and is the first in her “Wicked Rakes” series. I have a lot of respect for how much goes into preparing and producing a novel and putting it out there for people to read so I was sincerely hoping to enjoy it but, sadly, this just wasn’t for me. I love historical romance so I was keen to read it and it certainly has the steamy factor so will probably still appeal to some. For me though, it just lacked some polish and the writing style just didn’t feel like it was working. It started off good – I loved the opening scenes in the lake and got a good picture of the events and the characters but then it felt like it was just too character focused almost. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that we get so much focus on the hero and heroine but it meant that the secondary characters aren’t really fleshed out so I couldn’t warm to them and the plot had lots going on but it felt a bit jarring and jumpy for me in places. It just needed a bit more development to really shine and also, because there were several errors that had made it past the editors, I couldn’t rank it higher than 3-3.5 stars sadly. I did make a list for the author to pass on the mistakes spotted so hopefully in future printings these can be ironed out and maybe further books will improve on the characters of this first book.
