When life gets you down sometimes it can feel like you’re drowning and there’s no way out. I’ve been there. I find that when I’m feeling this way I can’t write at all, It just dries up any creativity or expression. It's the story of a boy sold into slavery on a fishing boat in Lake Volta, Ghana. Por eso Paul Auster (1947-2024) me parece tan vivo como cuando lo leí por primera vez tan sólo apenas hace siete años. Aún no entraba a la universidad y el escritor de New Jersey ya me había lanzado una terrible lección de por vida: todo escritor genuino se cansa en algún momento de la universidad, puesto que es un grandísimo lugar para la lectura, pero no para la escritura. Bastó que leyera las primeras páginas de su novela autobiográfica A salto de mata para darme cuenta de la convergencia que habría de tener con él desde el primer semestre de mi carrera, donde comprobé, de hecho, que las clases y el ambiente tendían más bien al hartazgo y a la incómoda sensación de que seguir hablando de libros y no escribirlos se parecía a tener un crush y no poder decirle nada. A él en la Universidad de Columbia, a mí en la Universidad de Guadalajara. De lo que se colige que el escritor no se siente bien ni en las aulas, espacio propicio a la autocomplacencia y la regularización. ¿Dónde sino en su máquina, sus cuadernos, sus libros, en el reino donde todo lo escrito se traduce en libertad y felicidad? EVERY DAY IS A CHANCE TO START AGAIN ✨ I always get a bit melancholy when it’s Summer Solstice because I love summer so much and I know that there’s always some annoying little bugger that will say, “oh well, nights will be getting darker and it’ll soon be Christmas” Argggh! ☀️This time each year, I feel we’ve just got into our swing – flip flops and flowy things are the go-to choice of style, the duvet coats are finally but a distant memory (mine is shoved away, gathering dust in the cupboard ‘o crap and I wish it could stay there!) And our thoughts turn to balmy nights in the garden or by the river sipping rosé (just me?) ☀️I feel that everywhere I walk, instead of being met with grumpy faces and huddled ‘don’t talk to me’ energy, I’m met with open, smiley faces and nods of hello in recognition that we are all feeling just a little more buoyant thanks to Mrs Sunshine. And as much as I love the smell of woodburning fires, mulled wine and pine, nothing lifts my spirits more than the scent of a spritz of Ambre Solaire sun cream and a piña colada 🍹 So I’d like this post to serve as a mid-year reminder – all because the plans we had at the beginning of the year may not have gone as well as we wanted – we may not have taken up a new hobby, started eating healthier or joined the gym, please remember, not just today because it’s Summer Solstice but EVERY day is a chance to start again to make your life as happy and as rewarding as it can be….and for as long as we can, let’s make the most of the longer days and forget that duvet coat languishing in cupboard! 😘 #midlifemum #freelancewriter #fabover50 #50plusandfabulous #midlifewomen #wellbeingwarrior #summersolstice #iamwriting #discoverunder5k #livelifehappy

It’s that time of the week again and we are dropping into your feed for more tough love. 👇 It’s easy to TELL you, “Girrrrlll. Stop comparing your writing journey to others!” It's easy to look at someone else's success and feel like you're falling behind. You’re not a bad person for feeling envy. Logically, you KNOW every author has their own unique journey, filled with ups and downs, triumphs and failures. We need to focus our energy on something else instead. Comparison is the thief of joy, YADA YADA but SERIOUSLY does it rob you of the energy you need to continue on your writing path. You have to refuse to play that game. Learn to recognize unhelpful thoughts. Commit to recalibrating them. Don't let someone else's highlight reel diminish your progress. Your words, your voice, and your stories are unique to you and that's your power. Instead of comparison, pick up courage. Courage to write your truth, courage to share your words with the world, and courage to keep going, even when the going gets tough. Remember, you're not in competition with other authors. You're in a community. So let's lift each other up and celebrate each other's successes. After all, there's room for all of us in the world of literature. Keep writing, your words matter.
