A few photos from the incredible and mysterious Dwarfie Stane on the island of Hoy. 🏴💫 Hoy Island is Orkney’s second largest and with amazing desolate and green landscapes. Sitting in a valley (between Quoys and Rackwick) is the enigmatic megalithic Dwarfie Stane which could date as far back as 3500 BC. A huge block of red sandstone measuring about 8.5 metres long is the Dwarfie Stane which is thought to be Britain’s only example of a rock-cut ‘tomb’. The stone has been placed there millions of years ago by Mother Nature. The ancients have somehow carved out an incredible chamber. An opening, three feet square, is cut into the stone and leads to the inner chamber. It’s carved with precision, the sides are very smooth and there are small ridges and grooves. The chamber contains two rock-cut spaces both of which are very compact. The space on the right has what looks like a ‘pillow’ carved into the stone. Red sandstone is very hard so the precision of the chamber incredible. The style of the chamber is not like anything I’ve seen in the UK and feels like something you would see in the Mediterranean. The acoustic properties inside the chamber are amazing. The chamber has a sonic resonance which felt very similar to being inside the the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid. Outside the entrance is a large sandstone block which was used to seal the opening. The tomb was still sealed in the 16th century. There are many legends and folklore associated with the Dwarfie Stane. As the name suggests one legend is a dwarf by the name of Trollid lived within it and it is also thought to be connected with giants who built it. Was it used as a tomb or for something else? The Dwarfie Stane is quite possibly my favourite megalithic site on the Orkney Islands! This evening me was grateful that this morning me pushed through to get my run done early. 5 miles, taking in all the views. A few walk breaks to keep things easy, plus my head wasn't fully in it this morning. Four years ago this week we cancelled our wedding because the airports closed and lockdowns ensued. We had planned to get married in Portland, Oregon-USA on 26th April 2020. I think every one has their COVID existential anniversary memories, and this is ours. N was stateside, me in the UK and it wasn't the wedding cancellation that sucked, but the start of six months worrying separation, with an unknown end date. It was hard, but consider ourselves very lucky. Consequently, we celebrate this date/week as our actual wedding anniversary, we exchanged our vows over video chat and wore our rings from thereon forwards. Six months later we eloped to Gibraltar to tie the knot amidst a short window between lockdowns. October is just our legal anniversary date, but really it means we get to celebrate twice because we are greedy like that. This weekend was dismal weather wise, blowing a hooley, wet AND cold all day. Pete gave good snuggles. Not much solar for the airfryer. We ate cosily and stayed warm in the van, in a very quiet place overlooking the sea, planning what to see on our next island hop. Belated anniversary noms occurred yesterday, the sun came out and so the dauphs went in the airfryer, as did the sprouts roasted in rendered duck fat. We had picked up some reduced duck breasts from Lidl and I made a spiced sauce from the vault of ingredients in the cupboard. Sour barberries, black cardamon, star anise, fresh galangal and cloves, some leftover red wine, stock and sweetened with apricot jam. Reduced and sieved, finished with butter. Would have also made a tasty hot beverage, said N. We ate two duck breasts each, because they were short-dated and on offer... but.... also because, luxury is not luxury without generosity, right?
