Curtis Mayfield - Roots, original 1971 Curtom pressing. This morning while having coffee and checking emails I was looking for an album to get me into a groove. I browsed over my Curtis section and Roots popped right out. I put the needle on and “Get Down” exploded out of the speakers and immediately, the groove found me. This record further shows off this master genius and pioneer of soul/funk/r&b. He was a game changer, a man with a true heart of expression and his music will always bring people together because it is so infectious!!! This was his second album after his self titled success. He stays close to the status and culture of the African American experience of the early 70’s, the general state of the earth/environment and our own selves, which proves to be so thought provoking. He also holds tight to themes of love and togetherness. A true poet who demands respect (without asking) and before you know it, you’re thinking and dancing at the same time, at a high caliber. King Curtis passed away years ago down the street from where I grew up here in the burbs of Atlanta and is a local and global hero, and his music continues to do exactly what he intended. I saw yesterday @stepinwhat doing the #top9soulalbums challenge by @uptowndiggin and of course i had to jump in because it is an important genre for me.
