The mystique and adventure of what might be around the next bend ... Federation Walk (including Philip Park) is the terrestrial jewel in the crown of The Spit, and its low impact pathways provide a perfect balance of between accessibility and natural amenity. At present there is a push to turn large sections of this into wide concrete pathways for "shared" use by E-scooters and skateboards, pedal and electric bikes, pedestrians and more. SOSA is currently engaged with various departments on this issue and oppose the installation of such rigid and high impact infrastructure on sensitive dune areas within a conservation site such as Federation Walk. SOSA supports the so-called Oceanway pathway proposed to connect Main Beach to the top of The Spit to run via the existing shared pathway along Seaworld Drive and not be duplicated over sensitive dune and littoral coastal habitat designated for reserve and conservation. The established pathways should be retained and properly maintained to provide soft access to Federation Walk whilst preserving the low impact natural amenity of the area. Over 90% of the Gold Coast's accessible coastline is developed or shaped with hard infrastructure and concrete right up to the shoreline. The Spit and Federation Walk represent the last remaining stretch of our accessible coastline which is undeveloped and free from hard infrastructure including concrete, bollards, excessive signage, platforms, structures and buildings — it should stay this way. The Spit and Federation Walk sand dunes play an important role providing critical habitat to numerous species including many birds, reptiles and small animals, including nesting turtles. Concrete pathways, potential lighting and the introduction of excessive hard infrastructure threatens this habitat and the amenity it provides for both people and wildlife. #federationwalk #thespit #southportspit #dunesystem #saveourspit #goldcoastoceanway
