This Cragganmore has been on quite the journey to arrive at its final profile: thirty years in refill wood, followed by five in fresh port and a final period of just over two years in a second fill barrel. The result of this staggered maturation is that the richer and fruitier tones of the port wood have been well-balanced and rounded at either side by the softer influence of plain refill wood. The net result is a profile more akin to a refill sherry maturation. The whisky itself is rich and highly detailed with beautiful dark fruit character, spices and a wonderful weight that shows off the fatness of Cragganmore’s underlying worm-tub cooled distillate. This is a really impressive and unusual cask of Cragganmore, that has had quite the journey before it made its way into our grubby mitts. This cask started its life in a refill hogshead, maturing for 30 years, before being moved into a fresh port barrique for 5 years, and then finally spending just over 2 years in a 2nd fill barrel. The end result is a beautifully rich and layered whisky that is everything we love about older, more mature single malts and displays a character that is closer to a refill sherry maturation in style. We’ve been on the hunt for some Aberlour casks for quite some time, so you can imagine how giddy we were to pick up, not one, but two excellent casks; a rich and spicy 1989, and a soft and fruity 1991, both matured in refill hogsheads. It was obvious to us that it was time to do some tinkering and marry these beauties, to create an Aberlour greater than the sum of its parts! We are very happy with the result.
