Glen Fiddich (Gleann Fhiodhaich meaning “valley of the deer”) is a hidden and intriguing Glen that runs along a tributary of the Spey. Parking at Bridgehaugh, in the Cabrach, we headed along a primrose and pheasant strewn track to Glenfiddich Lodge. The now abandoned lodge was a holiday home of the Gordon’s built c. 1790 and designed by an up and coming architect John Plaw before he emigrated to Canada. The buildings are one of three examples of his work in the UK and the only in Scotland. Continuing along the Glen we followed the River Fiddich to the evocative Elf House, a small cave reported to be 30m deep, possibly formed within a lime seam and full of lime loving plants and mosses. Queen Victoria wrote about an ‘extremely pretty’ flat area at the end of a path overhanging a stream where they had lunch. Further along the Glen the track raises to the head of Glen Suie where the Queens Cairn overlooks Glenlivet and the views of the Cairngorms. The cairn was erected in 1867 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s visit to the area that year. Our running quickly slowed to a walk as we continued to climb upwards on Morton’s Way to the trig point at 781m. The track runs between Glenlivet and Glen Fiddich and you can see the cobbled track in parts, which we assume is for horses transporting information and possibly money between the two Glens. This was the first time getting to Corryhabbie Hill in this direction and it was definitely my favourite route to the top so far. An interesting area with more to explore at different times of year. We’ve just spent the week at Nairn Lochloy caravan park @parkdeanresorts This is our first caravan holiday as a family and we absolutely loved it! Once you have completed that, you can explore the tracks around Cluny Hill – you might even find Helge’s Hole and even spot a dragon. It’s been too long since I’ve been up Moray’s highest hill and with a short weather and work window I went for a wee jolly up Ben Rinnes. I was the only person on the hill accompanied by skylarks with a wee plane that circled the top. Stomping up and running down, I moved quick enough to stay warm in the stiff North Westerly wind. Spring is slow to start this year and there is still snow on a North West side pocket of Corryhabbie Hill and the North face of Lochnagar. A historic painting is all wrapped up and ready to be sent away for important restoration. The Tournament is one of two paintings which hang in the stunning courtroom in the Tolbooth, in desperate need of some TLC. The FHT has been raising funds to help with the skilled restoration works. The Tournament depicts a scene in Sir Thomas Dick Lauder’s book The Wolf of Badenoch during the reign of Robert II (1371 – 1390) whose son-in-law, the Earl of Moray, held a tourney at St John’s Mead on the banks of the River Findhorn close to Darnaway Castle, the home to this day of John Stuart, 21st Earl of Moray. However, around £5k is still needed to restore The Riding of the Marches which shows Forres Town Council on the 1st October 1840 ceremonially checking the town’s boundaries. In the 19th century, several 1,400-year-old bull carvings were found at Burghead in Moray, once the home of a huge Pictish fortress 🐂 According to @nationalmuseumsscotland, “various theories have been put forward to explain their significance, including religious, territorial emblems or clan totems". Experts and volunteers working with the University of Aberdeen’s Northern Picts project recently managed to dig down to the base of the fort’s upper citadel rampart ⛏️ They unearthed a wall almost three metres high which provided a sense of the scale and importance of this site and how much still lies beneath the surface.
