Ein kleiner Reisebericht: Schottlands größtes Whiskyfestival feierte Anfang Mai 2024 sein 25-jähriges Jubiläum und endete vergangene Woche mit einem Besucherrekord. Über 700 Veranstaltungen, verteilt auf 85 Veranstaltungsorte in der gesamten Speyside fanden innerhalb knapp einer Woche satt. Rund 7.500 Tickets wurden an Besucher aus 39 Nationen verkauft. Diese nackten Zahlen sind vor Ort jedoch nicht zu spüren. Fühlt es sich doch mehr wie ein großes Familientreffen an. Immer wieder trifft man während der sechs Tage auf bekannte Gesichter. Man kennt sich und teilt die Begeisterung für das „liquid Gold“, der schönsten Spirituose der Welt. Zur Eröffnung trafen sich in diesem Jahr die Vertreter der Whiskybranche beim „Touch of Tartan“ Dinner in der Macallan Distillery. Die spektakuläre Architektur der Brennerei war eine beeindruckende Kulisse für den Abend, an dem Reden gehalten wurden, Preise vergeben wurden, verstorbenen Whiskygrößen gedacht wurde und natürlich soziale Kontakte innerhalb der Branche bei einem oder zwei guten Drams gepflegt wurden. We just returned home from the most amazing week in the Scottish Highlands attending the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. One event we just loved was sipping drams and roasting marshmallows in front of a bonfire on the river next to Tomintoul Distillery. This time last week, the 2024 Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival was well underway. With more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries based in the beautiful Speyside area we call home; the festival is always an exciting time of year with much to see and do for thousands of visiting whisky enthusiasts. This year was certainly no exception with the festival celebrating its 25th anniversary! Not wanting the excitement to end, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with this fantastic photo from the 2009 Whisky Festival taken at our Shortbread Shop. Featured are Lesley McCavery, International Sales, and Ashley Howie, Shortbread 2 Factory, with their horses who live on our grounds by Aberlour House. The dust has settled after this year's @spirit_speyside Festival and we’re looking back on what was a very special Saturday evening at Speyburn Distillery. Speyburn After Hours was a celebratory event to mark the one-year anniversary since we first opened our doors to visitors. An evening of live music, delicious street food and some very special drams inside our dunnage warehouse, and Scotland’s only listed intact Drum Maltings, it was a night to remember for all those who managed to snatch up the highly sought after tickets. Continuing with the Speyside region saw us visit Distillery No 65 which has been correctly identified as Tamnavulin. A warm welcome met us when we signed in for our tour. We were given an excellent tour by Distillery Manager, Leon Webb, who had a great sense of humour and shared the distillery’s aspirations to set up a new visitor centre. I liked his approach of asking how guests would design it. The building planned for this has great potential and will be worth a revisit to see the final version. Modifications to the stills following its re-awakening in 2007 have allowed for a more complex spirit and they are producing some lovely wine cask finished whisky that is extremely competitively priced. The distillery is evolving under current management and staff and is striving to create a community environment with plans for the visitor centre which may well house tasting rooms and a cafe to relax in. Thank you to Carla for facilitating the donation of 4 bottles from their wine cask editions to include in our auction. Distillery No 63 was, as I’m sure you figured out, in Speyside. We never “toured” Mortlach but bumped into Guy when taking some photographs. While tasting a sample of their 12 yr old in the pop up shop, Guy talked us through their unique distillation process. I’m the 1st to admit the science of the process can take me a wee while to fully understand sometimes so his explanation of their 2.81 distillation took my full attention. We’ve had a 2.5 distillation explained along with double and treble distillation, this took a little longer to get my head round. The dram was excellent. A very informative ad hoc visit which evidences that every day is a school day. Carrying on with the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, we tried to visit some distilleries not ordinarily open to visitors. This led us to Distillery No 62 which was Craigellachie. We were given a warm welcome by the whole team and a well guided tour was hosted by one of our Facebook followers, thank you Mike McGinty. He was very personable and informative. I learned a lot about the influence of their processes and how the style of still gives Craigellachie their signature heavier style which they are rightly very proud of. The worm tub condensers made for a memorable image and thanks to Steven,the distillery manager, for pointing out the best vantage points for photographs - I hope I did them justice. With only 546 bottles available, Speyburn Single cask #215 has been bottled exclusively for this year's @spirit_speyside. Distilled in 2004, it has been slowly maturing in a first fill Oloroso Sherry Cask for nearly two decades. Bottled in 2024 at a natural strength of 58.6%, it is only available in our distillery shop. With its Deep Mahogany colour, notes of dried fruit and spices, along with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg, this is a truly remarkable single malt. The Glenallachie Wonders of Wood was fantastic at the @spirit_speyside festival.
