THE. SUMMER. COCKTAIL. LOUNGE. IS. READY. I live in a typical 1970s ranch. There's no real exciting architecture, unique features, or wow factor to the house itself. When it comes to decorating that's my chance to shine. This little 'porch' it's one of my favorite spots. For years it was jammed full of garden items with no assemblance or organization. It's redeeming factor is floor to ceiling screens that overlook the yard. Last year I cleaned it all out, painted the wall, added a fun wire chandelier, clay pots and wrought iron tidbits, and leftover vintage artwork that didn't fit in the house. It is reborn as a cocktail lounge for anybody that would like to stop by and have a cold beer or an Old Fashioned. As you can see in the photos, my backyard drops off on a hill so it's a great place to sit to overlook the yard and flower beds (and weeds) and watch the world go by.. Bartender... It’s my #sundayviews, a weekly post where I share my favorite things + places + jewelry I’m obsessed with, like the Riley earrings I’m wearing here. I was all tied up this past week with the Peach’s spring ballet performances at the Harris Theater. Sometimes the chauffeuring part of motherhood is a total time suck no one tells you about but I’ve been trying to make the most of it. While I was waiting for her in between shows, I walked over to @millennium_park and grabbed my most favorite food in the world- a Chicago style hot dog. Now don’t go thinking I am having these 24-7. I totally try to limit myself to a few a year and this first one of the warm weather season was heaven and eating it while taking in the nature of the park had me #winning. Speaking of ballerinas, or at least my teenage one, they like to fuel up on the most random things- fried chicken, burrito bowls and surprisingly, empanadas from @deeppurplacai. I had to find out what the hype was about so when my ballerina made a request to go there, i had her grab an extra margarita empanada for me. These kids always know what’s good- it was absolutely delish! Now I have to try more! I was on the hunt for chocolate covered strawberries- a good gift to give when flowers aren’t always someone’s jam. @yelpchicago directed me to @mr.kites chocolate on Division in my old hood. It is a sugar lover’s dream- chock full of candy, handmade truffles and chocolate covered everything. I’m talking wall to wall amazingness tucked into an adorable storefront. I grabbed the strawberries for Peach, chocolate covered pretzels for Mr c+p, sour patch candies for Coco and, of course, a walnut cluster for myself. I guess I found my new fav place in Chicago. In another episode of “she is seriously always five years late to the game,” Mr c+p and I started watching @biglittlelies recently. While I don’t live under a rock and actually heard of it, I never had the chance to watch and now we are HOOKED! Everyone is so amazing in this show and I can’t wait to binge season 2. THE OTHER MAXIMALIST CORNER... Here's the opposing corner of my 'Frunch' room which is overflowing with vintage. I am a maximalist at heart. I'm assuming you are too since you follow along. If you know another maximalist, share the goodness. I love marble top tables. I love leopard print. I love things that remind me of my pet hence the dog pillow. I love hometown postcards. I love wood cigar boxes. I love bookends. I love vintage books with gold etching. I love tassels. I love antlers. I love pheasant feathers. I love a taxidermy. Some might wonder what the tall blue piece of wood with a tassel is. Several years ago we visited a farm field in Wisconsin where my husband picked crops as a child with his family. On the edge of the farm field was tenement housing for the workers. The only duplex still standing was the one he lived in, be it trees growing through the roof, the front door standing a jar and falling off, devoid of anything worthy on the inside except a few items. Eventually mother nature would take over completely. So my husband pulled at the front door until this piece of wood frame came off. It still has the door handle on both sides with the latch. It's the prettiest blue in a perfect patina. For years it stood in the corner of my garage as I didn't know what to do with it. I finally brought it in and just tipped it against the wall and added the tassel. It's a great conversation piece. I was so thrilled to co-chair the 2024 @balletchicago gala at the historic Chicago Yacht Club last week. Everything was superb- from the food, to the music, to the ambiance. One of my fav things from that night was that the female owned Pilsen florist, @zinsflowershop created the Mozart themed centerpieces that were absolutely gorgeous. This sunscreen comes out in a spray mist and dries super fast and doesn’t leave any residue marks. We recently made new friends and were so honored to be invited to their home this past week to celebrate a Passover Seder. Although I grew up in a predominantly Jewish suburb (hello Buffalo Grove!) and our closest friends are Jewish, we have never participated in a Passover gathering. I went to @ishsflowers and asked him to create the perfect hostess gift to bring, along with delicious kosher wines. As usual, he created a gorgeous and festive bouquet to match this celebration of freedom. Our family learned so much about the meaning of Passover during the fabulous meal we shared with our friends. We all felt so blessed to have been invited and we hope that the lessons taken from this holiday- to demonstrate gratitude, hope and grit- remain deep in Coco and Peach’s hearts as they did for Mr c+p and I. It’s my #sundayviews, a weekly post where I share my favorite things + places + jewelry I’m obsessed with, like the Bri earrings I’m wearing here. The other day, my oldest daughter Peach needed a recharge so we went to the happiest place in Chicago- and for us, that place is Chinatown. Instead of hitting our usual spot, we went to @sushiplusrotary. My friend, designer @chemical_dyesart, had recommended it to me a million years ago and I finally went. It is the coolest sushi restaurant with a conveyor belt serving amazing offerings. We loved the “sushi sandwich” and watching the food pass by. After dinner, we went to @touslesjourschi located in the newer part of Chinatown. She picked up chocolate covered strawberries and I grabbed their delicious raisin bread. Since I love roses in anything, we tried the rose macarons and they were yummy. My favorite part- catching up with my teen 🥹💗 I am so proud to once again co-chair the 2024 @balletchicago spring gala on 4/25/24 at the historic @chicagoyachtclub! With gorgeous Lake Michigan as our backdrop, guests will be entertained during the cocktail hour with live music from jazz ensemble @porterhouse.trio, followed by an incredible dinner prepared by Chef Larry Asher. You may ask- what’s the gala raising donations for? Well, Ballet Chicago is Chicago’s only pre-professional school that teaches the Balanchine technique, and it’s where our incredible students receive a world class, accelerated ballet education that extends beyond the barre. Ballet Chicago is also the only ballet school in Chicago that offers students the unique experience for our pre-professional student dancers to dance on two of Chicago’s biggest professional stages- the Athenaeum and Harris Theater- for multiple shows. Week 3 reflection. I've recently shared with one of my kids how I'd sit in the parking lot after dropping them off at school as their bus driver and listen to Moody radio as Dr. Tony Evans would come across the air waves and the Urban Alternative would begin. Yesterday was the perfect spring weather. Madison, Moira, and I walked to our neighborhood lakeside park and spent the afternoon just lounging and reading. Moira can be a little fussy staying where we put her at home but we've discovered that she's pretty great just sitting on the blanket with us... she still got restless and pawed at our books and got tangled in her leash at times but in general it was lovely. There were so many people out by the beach and it makes me happy to see so many different families and different kinds of people just existing in this public space. And look at that view... It’s my #sundayviews, a weekly post where I share my favorite things + places + jewelry I’m obsessed with, like the Marie earrings I’m wearing here. Mr c+p and I just wrapped up watching The Shining Girls on @appletv. It was such a a great show that is so hard to describe- part thriller, part sci-fi and it’s all set in Chicago throughout a century. We stayed up so late every night binge watching it because it was riveting! I was so happy to hear that @serialpodcast came out with a new season. It’s a podcast I’ve always loved and this time it focuses on Guantanamo Bay. I’m only up to the second episode but so far, it’s left me completely disillusioned with American politics if that was even possible. I grabbed dinner with some friends the other day at @ellaellichicago. I haven’t been there in forever and it did not disappoint. We split the scallops, gnocchi, and chicken thighs which were all amazing. But for me, the show stoppers were the grilled artichoke and French onion toast. I have been having a love-hate relationship with my running and currently, I’m on a good streak. I had to do a long run so I laced up and hit the lakefront path the other day. Our amazing city is so breathtaking and sometimes I have to stop and take it all in. I thought I had read this before but it turns out I had started it but then got distracted and didn’t finish it. Well I’m glad I restarted this book because it was a terrific read and in the same vein as Astor, which I read a few weeks ago. It’s amazing how much one family influenced so much of our past and current culture. I went on a trip recently and on our flights home, I started binge watching the second season of @gildedagehbo. The theme was right in line with the book I just read- old money NYC families and the era in which the ruled society. It’s clear that all of the storylines are lifted directly from the lives of families like the Vanderbilts and Astors and the gorgeous costuming and sets bring this world to life. I wanted to introduce myself to our new followers! If you’ve been reading this long enough, then you’d know I’m a big self care promoter and not just because I’m a mental health provider. If there was a theme to this week, it would be the best strategies that I use to keep myself feeling well, inside and out. First up, I’m really into my skin care. I haven’t started using the help from injectables so I stick to what I can do from home to keep my skin feeling youthful. I discovered the @dermguruaccount and love the easy advice board certified dermatologist Dr. Zubritsky provides and practical recommendations. And she breaks down what I should be doing with my am/pm routine perfectly. Food and good company fill my heart so when I want to feel good, I grab friends and check out a restaurant. Mr c+p and I grabbed our friends and headed over to @thewarblerchicago in the heart of Lincoln Square. I swear I’ve been to this physical location many times but it’s been revamped and absolutely gorgeous. Seriously- the interior is amazing and the service was top notch. We ordered the crispy cauliflower for the table sooo good!!! I had the chicken salad sandwich and rosé- so so good. We had a leisurely lunch and lots of laughs- the perfect day! I’m currently on vacation and my favorite thing to listen to is premade @applemusic playlists. I am obsessed with Cover Stars, which now includes the incredible reimagined “Jolene” by the 👑 🐝 @beyonce. Got any recommendations for me to try out?
