It's been a few days since the festival ended but I still need to post about it. Roadburn recap Thursday: First up it was Hexvessel opening up the festival with their Polar Veil record. Then I briefly stumbled into the Engine Room for the start of Sunrise Patriot Motion. I had to leave there since I wanted to see Wiegedood perform the soundtrack to A Page of Madness. After getting some food I returned to the 013 and was raving with Scaler. Then I watched Inter Arma petform their new album before catching most of Spill Gold who I wanted to see since their show during Roadburn Redux. Chelsea Wolfe put on an amazing show, which I almost watched in full if there wasn't the first set from Royal Thunder. Roadburn day 1 1. Hexvessel - performing polar veil; love that they've gone more black metal with this record. Probably one of my favourite male vocalists. Sound was excellent. 2. Sunrise Patriot Motion - probably my band of the day. Heavy and interesting sorta post-punk goth with the best kind of unhinged vocal. 3. Ran into the lovely Milena from GGGOLDDD again. 4. Scaler - was amazing, danced loads. 5. Void ov Voices - Attila from Sunn doing vibes while wearing big mad wings that had scorpions and Giger art projected onto them. 6. Clipping - amazing hiphop set. 7. The incomparable Chelsea Wolfe 🖤 8. Backxwash returned to play a surprise show. Their debut album "Black Fellflower Stream" struck us from the first listening and we are beyond happy to start this collaboration! Their debut album, Black Fellflower Stream, a portrait of obsession and torment set entirely in a single isolated field where a man in the throes of mania believes he is capable of digging a hole deep enough to reach oil. With Yellow Eyes co-founders Will and Sam Skarstad on guitars and Andrew Chugg on vocals, Torrent finds surreal new territory at the edges of heavy metal and gothic rock, with the odd tensions of Killing Joke and the desperate pop undulations of Lifelover, Kino, and The Snake Corps. Rising out of the expanse is Chugg’s textured, melodic howl, like Motörhead playing outdoors a valley away. But for all of its grandeur, Torrent’s corners are in shadow, molded with glistening dungeon synth, unable to exorcise the fearful specter of memory and the terrible knowledge of self-annihilation. For all that it condemns, Black Dream of the Torrent, with music written primarily by Will Skarstad, lyrics written by Sam Skarstad and a delirious process of production and additional writing by the full band in the Summer and Autumn of 2021, is fundamentally a celebration of blind bliss and crazed focus, a fading recollection of Earth warmed by its own paranoid glow, a lament for the angels singing somewhere underground who will be dragged, gulping, into sight. Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream An interesting Mix of black metal and Gothic rock (and more!), apparently to much for Metal Archives, whatever the Problem of those dorks is. A very unique album by Yellow Eyes members. Underrated! 2. Brånd - Wo Draht da Weg? Honestly surprised this project isn't bigger by now. Post-Punk and Black Metal by the man behind Kringa, Weathered Crest, Gates of Londra... De Söwe Nåcht is my most played song this year, beautiful 3. Kulttimaa - Sydän Hautojen ja Maailmojen Tuolla Puolen I randomly checked this out after MoH announced it. Weird finnish folk, that quickly turned into one of my most listened albums of the year. Need more of this! 4. Bat Magic - Feast of Blood The Ordo Vampyr Orientis is a new BM circle with constant high quality output. Bat Magic is one of them, with the tape being released in 2022. Short but sweet! 5. Trhä - Talcunnana... Trhä releases four albums this year, with Ma Heshiva... being my favorite, this is a close second though. Can't wait for the soon to be released LP! 6. Calling of Phasmic Presence - Collection One Another compilation, this time compiling all the works of Calling besides the latest split. One of my favorite new projects! Fifth year where I use Christmas as a means to catch up and just like last year we find ourselves underneath the “post” umbrella. _ 10. Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream Ich verstehen zi acclaim but it doesn’t gel with me as much. Still, quite impressive considering when I heard it the first time (last week). 9. Executioner’s Mask - Winterlong Profound Lore’s first and only band named Executioner Mask finally clicked with me, no cap. 8. Fontaines D.C. - Skinty Fia Kinda sucks to see these lads get less impressive with each new outing but this still had compelling enough moments to lends its place. 7. Fes - With Regards From Home Think Paramore but more athletic and mathy. Sounds dope? It is. Not for everyone but definitely for me. 6. Dry Cleaning - Stumpwork Their unique framework remains unchanged but certain elements are added and some expanded upon. Based and qualitypilled. 5. White Lies - As I Try Not To Fall Apart First album of theirs I listened and I’m loving it. Some songs straight up refuse to leave my neural network, fr fr. 4. Viagra Boys - Cave World These guys ain’t shrimps, they’re Poglodytes! Return to monke status: online. 3. Cassels - A Gut Feeling One of 2022’s biggest surprises and just in time to catch them live. Their unique mix of influences almost made them appear in previous parts but it fits the best here. 2. Johnny Walker - Want Eternal hails to @hereswhatihear for getting me into these Chads last year. Delivered on all the promises of “Early Trauma” and I couldn’t be happier. Premium post-punk which perfectly balances angst, gloominess and confusion which comes with… well existing in this day and age. 1. Yard Act - The Overload Could’ve been the debut of the year but I would rather have it here with better competition so you understand how good it is. Quintessentially British in its critique but never foregoing that good stuff, the human spirit. The horse maybe dead with none left in the barn but no one said this would be easy. Best lyrics of 2022 and an absolute banger so either take it or run… Or both!

The unusually named SUNRISE PATRIOT MOTION put out one of my favorite releases of 2022, Black Fellflower Stream, in July of this year on cassette only. Featuring the twin brothers from NYC black metal eccentrics Yellow Eyes, SPM takes a decidedly more romantic- sounding, post punk-influenced turn with hints of Yellow Eyes' jagged atonality. This sounds neither like a typical post punk release or black metal, with machine-like, semi danceable, heavy drumming, uniquely desperate, howled vocals and an atmosphere of medieval romanticism blanketing the whole affair. Think Virus if they were more influenced by Killing Joke than Voivod and had unhinged Lifelover type screams. Actually the description on the bandcamp mentioned Killing Joke, Kino (who I only know about because of Ploho) and Lifelover. Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream (2022) James looks at New York based experimental black metal/goth rock/dungeon synth act Sunrise Patriot Motion and their debut album Black Fellflower Stream, released independently on June 10th. Well I'll be straightforward, this is my favourite album so far this year. Its not an easy call to make but this is simply just a perfect album. The seamless combination of black metal, goth rock and dungeon synth makes for a fascinating listen. The trio manage to capture the essence of each influence without compromising the integrity of any. From the stunning guitar tone to the complex song writing, unhinged vocals and amazing texturing employed, there's a whole lot to love. The music might make you think of Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz, except everything seems to be inverted. This is spell-binding in every sense of the word, as if the band is laying claim to your mind from the seat of a contorted dimension. 🇩🇪 @kreatorofficial — 𝙃𝙖𝙩𝙚 Ü𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝘼𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙨 - Consistency is king. On their 15th record, Kreator don’t fix what isn’t broken, turning in another clinic in face-ripping, anthemic, fascist-killing thrash metal. The title-track is among the band’s best tracks of all-time, and the others are never far behind. 🇸🇪 @soreption — 𝙅𝙤𝙧𝙙 - Stank face ensues. Neighboring Psycroptic and Obscura with complex, memorable riffs at the speed of light, Soreption sound like death metal robots from a distant planet. The inclusion of Meshuggah-like synths is brilliant. 🇺🇸 @allisonponthier — 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙀𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙨 - This EP is everything you could want from a rising star—inspired, original, catchy-as-hell. Between “Autopilot” and “Hardcore,” Allison Ponthier emphatically secures her place in the indie pop vanguard, and I can’t wait to hear what’s next. 🇺🇸 @kardashevband — 𝙇𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙞𝙩𝙚 - My disagreements with production aside, ‘Liminal Rite’ features outstanding songwriting with a compelling story driving the musical narrative. There’s no band out there like Kardashev—check out ‘The Baring of Shadows’ if you haven’t already. 🇨🇦 @tombmoldband — 𝘼𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘽𝙤𝙙𝙮 - Tomb Mold throw it back to demo-styled releases with this taste of what’s to come, a gruesome 13 minutes of spiraling into the void. 🇺🇸 @cobratoof — 𝙄 𝙏𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙚 - E L U C I D’s eerie but smooth beats are strangely hypnotic. Like billy woods’ ‘Aethiopes,’ the lyricism and instrumentation feed into an unsettling atmosphere. 🇺🇸 Deathwhite — 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙮 𝙀𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 - Deathwhite’s eerie brand of gothic doom evokes the sensation of mist landing on your skin, possibly as you walk away from a past filled with sorrow.
* Album Review * Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream Genre: Atmospheric / Avantgarde Black Metal / Post Punk Label: Independent Year: 2022 Goth-infused black metal is becoming one hell of a drug. Sunrise Patriot Motion signal the druggyness in more than one way, ofc. Similarly to related bands Ustalost and Yellow Eyes, I can´t really make up any distinct meaning from the combination of Band name and album title and the bandcamp promo blurb couldn´t be more meaningless - unless the goal was to shoehorn Motörhead into it for search-engine optimisation. Yes, Sunrise Patriot Motion are strange and maybe a tad pretentious, but they also don´t hide it at all - rather, they embrace it. What we´re being treated to on 'Black Fellflower Stream' is seriously unique and draws on gothic influences I haven´t heard yet. Clearly inspired by the Synthpop and Darkwave side of 80s post punk, there are many odd choices and unique sound design on 'Black Fellflower Stream'. There is a distinct contrast between the almost chiptune-ish bloops of a track like 'Oil Dream field', the Oblivion NPC music of 'Antigleam' and the dream pop inspired guitar work of 'My Father's Christian Humidor'. Frankly, most of the material is on the softer side and would pass as synth oriented post punk if the vocals were less harsh or if there was just slightly less distortion on the guitars. As metalheads become more adventurous with what other genres they like and as that appreciation becomes less and less ironic, we experience metal becoming more broadly defined. If Sunrise Patriot Motion counts as metal, I cannot say. I can however say, that 'Black Fellflower Stream' is a very solid album. Sicko duo ST is back with their signature throat-stomping d-beat drumming met with gristly death/grind riffing. The production has great punch and shrouds each song with plenty of brutal low-end, plus molten pitch-shifts. As usual, I’m stunned by the raging effect this music maintains with very little variance in tempo, and zero blast beats. Another masterpiece in its own niche, wholly fulfilling on the quality of the debut. ⛏ 🇺🇸 Sunrise Patriot Motion - Black Fellflower Stream The fine brothers behind #YellowEyes have a spectacular new side project in SPM; if any other, I would have ignored a band with ‘patriot’ in the name by reflex. This band’s sound hints at the deft melodic & dissonant interplay these members are known for, but envelopes a far less extreme essence with intimate doses of synth-tinged goth rock. The vocals lean towards clean, shouting at the rooftops with reverberated despair, and the percussion hits a simplistic retro vibe. Totally unique and refreshing tunes I didn’t know I needed. 🌻 🇺🇸 Toxic Stench - Gore Euphoria A new under the radar release from the legendary global gore label #BizarreLeprous. TS do the right things right with this classic display of goregrind that blasts and grooves. Brutal riffing and ignorant song structure keep this pummeling well-propelled along with roaring pitch-shifted seepage. This Florida band’s debut is really solid! 😲 🇺🇸 Crawl of Time - Demons In My Sleep We’ve got an all-star power electronics team assembled for this massive 3-track output of almost 30 sinister minutes. Featuring Mack of #GodisWar on track 1 and Jackson of #Commuter on track 3, the writhing industrial malevolence does not get any better than this. Artist: Sunrise Patriot Motion Year: 2022 The Skarstad brothers from @yelloweyesband creating fare in the vein of Lifelover, Killing Joke, Kino and The Snake Corps? Colour me intrigued - and 'Black Fellflower Stream', the debut album from Sunrise Patriot Motion, delivers on that intrigue on all fronts. A captivating record that weaves that same otherworldly blend of tension, darkness and delirious bliss that the brothers do so well in their other outlets whilst existing in an entirely separate blackened goth/post realm, the album paints "a portrait of obsession and torment set entirely in a single isolated field where a man in the throes of mania believes he is capable of digging a hole deep enough to reach oil", and it sounds exactly like you would imagine that description to sound. Admittedly light on the black metal aspects but heavy on the abyssal vibes, this will no doubt still appeal - so dive into the entire thing and pick up a tape pre-order at the Bandcamp below, digital released today.
