Willie Nelson turns 91 today and the Red Headed Stranger is still going strong. Willie is a lesson in how to live. He keeps active with his life purpose and surrounds himself with people of differing ages while taking time to laugh. He stands as a towering figure in music, someone whose influence cuts across generations and genres and who continually supports rising artists, giving them a leg up when he can. For me, his sweet voice has been whispering in my ear since I was a kid laying on my Grandpa's bed in Thunder Bay, taken away by 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain'. Willie is one of my favourite artists and he holds a commanding presence in my collection. "Spirit" is Willie Nelson's spartan 1996 masterwork, and if you ask for my favourite album of his, this would be it most days. Self produced and preceding the staggering "Teatro", the album highlights the sombre, serious side of Willie. Accompanied only by sister Bobbie on piano, Jody Payne on rhythm guitar and the great Johnny Gimble on fiddle, here is a work that is world weary Willie in all his strong, vulnerable glory. Devastating renditions of 'She Is Gone', 'Too Sick to Pray' and 'Your Memory Won't Die in My Grave' bring me to my knees. One of the only albums where he is not accompanied by long time harmonica maestro Mickey Raphael, it has a stark sound that sets it apart from any other Nelson record. His masterful guitar playing is front and centre with a voice like a whiskey soaked oak barrel. As my dear friend, @brettbilledeau once pointed out, this album is actually mid career for Willie. He has made heaps of great music since this, but you will be hard pressed to find an emotionally deeper or more beautiful album by Willie or anyone else. In recent memory I can’t recall a time I was more thrilled to find a rough/As-Is copy of anything in the wild as this wantlist score, Mort Garson’s beyond groovy pre-Plantasia project, The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds. And right on the cusp of taurus season. “Taurus: The Voluptuary” has been a personal theme of sorts for years, but the album is a perfect example of concept LP as a whole, imo. An early, inspired gem from a true genius with almost too much coolness going for it— from the sleeve/label visuals & album credits (which go so far as to inform us of key players’ signs & that the album itself was produced in May of 1967) to the futuristic, yet thoughtful rundown of the signs themselves amidst that sweet, flute- heavy, psych/electro combo. I do love an album with instructions too (the only acceptable time to be told how to feel). “Must Be Played In The Dark,” says The Zodiac. As if I need to be told! The wait is over and it's big announcement time...I'm very pleased to share that one of my art pieces I designed for Parallels has been accepted at @mosesianarts upcoming exhibit, Entwined, an exhibit about the integration and influence of visual and textural narratives. My piece being featured, Dimensions of Humanity, is based on The Meaning Maker character, and in the coming weeks I'll reveal why I chose to expand The Meaning Maker into a separate work of art. When I wrote an album about finding purpose and the concept of a multiverse, I never imagined my own world would literally open up into a multitude of worlds. The process of expanding album into visual narrative has been beyond an energizing experience. Seriously, you just never know where things will take you! APRIL 28 #ConceptAlbum 1973- #PinkFloyd is a #rockband from London which formed in 1965. The original members were Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright. The band’s first album “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” released in 1967. After Barrett left due to mental health issues in 1968 (replaced by David Gilmour), Waters became the primary lyricist. Waters would use the pressures faced by the band and Barrett’s issues as a basis for a new concept album, #TheDarkSideoftheMoon. This psychedelic rock album explored the themes of conflict, greed, time, death and mental illness and employed multitrack recordings, tape loops and synthesisers. Engineer Alan Parsons was instrumental in giving the album many of its sonic aspects. The album was recorded over almost 8.5 months between May 1972 and Feb 1973. The completed album consisted of 9 tracks totaling about 42mins. The album released on 1 Mar 1973 and became one of the most critically acclaimed albums in the history of #music. One critic stated “”I don’t care if you’ve never heard a note of the Pink Floyd’s music in your life, I’d unreservedly recommend everyone to The Dark Side of the Moon”. The album, with its famous prismatic spectrum cover art, debuted on #Billboard’s Top LPs & Tape (now the Billboard 200) chart at No. 95. The album peaked at No. 1 #OTD, its only week officially at the top of the chart. Ultimately, the album would sell over 45M copies worldwide and it is still listed as the No. 4 best-selling album of all-time (behind “Thriller”; “Back in Black” and “The Bodyguard”). Its initial run saw it on the Billboard 200 for 741 non-consecutive weeks between 17 Mar 1973 and 8 Oct 1988. Still wrapping my head around it all…after months of planning with the original venue, a massive logistical issue there 17 days before the show had me pivot and move it to the legendary Scullers Jazz Club, and in a lightning fast series of serendipitous events during that pivot I was called to the exquisite Museum of Modern Renaissance, which was without a doubt the space where this film absolutely must be shot - and I never would have found it had I done the show at the original venue. I made a dress to wear for the shoot during the week before, and the bespoke leather jacket I’d been working on for months was finished two days before so I got to wear it for my beautiful show on Sunday, followed by a magical Monday filming in this stunning space with @revivalhouserecords . Grateful for my community and highly adaptable nature that led me here. One more editing session on the audio, then we are on to mixing, and cutting the videos together with some astrophotography and animation! Years, months, weeks and days of work all culminating in this project, and I’m thrilled with where it’s at. I can not wait to unleash this art baby in a few months! I made a dress to wear for the shoot during the week before, and the bespoke leather jacket I’d been working on for months was finished two days before so I got to wear it for my beautiful show on Sunday, followed by a magical Monday filming in this stunning space with @revivalhouserecords . Grateful for my community and highly adaptable nature that led me here. One more editing session on the audio, then we are on to mixing, and cutting the videos together with some astrophotography and animation! On this day in history 04/25/24. In 1955 Capitol Records released “In the Wee Small Hours”, the ninth studio album by American vocalist Frank Sinatra, a collection of melancholy ballads with arrangements by Nelson Riddle. It helped popularize the 12-inch format for non-classical recordings. The album’s songs deal with themes such as introspection, melancholy, lost love, failed relationships, depression and night life. The cover artwork reflects these themes, portraying Sinatra alone at night on an eerie and deserted city street awash in blue-tinged street lights. In the Wee Small Hours has been called one of the first concept albums. The album was a commercial success, peaking at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, where it stayed for 18 weeks, becoming Sinatra’s highest-charting album since Songs by Sinatra in 1947. The success of the album helped popularize the viability of the 12-inch LP in popular music, and the 10-inch format fell into obsolescence by the end of the 1950s. In 1970 it was re-issued as a ten track album under the name What Is This Thing Called Love?. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it number 100 on their list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, dropping it to number 101 in the 2012 revision and to number 282 in the 2020 update. Now you know.
