I remember reading in a Rita Mae Brown novel, two older characters fondly regarding a younger character reading Handley Cross for the first time. That got me extra curious! Lella Lombardi: la única mujer con puntos en la F1. Un día como hoy, pero de 1975, Lombardi se convirtió en la única mujer en anotar puntos en un fin de semana oficial de carrera, durante el GP de España del '75, disputado en el circuito urbano de Montjuïc en Barcelona, España. Esta carrera tomaría un giro históricamente triste, ya que los pilotos habían protestado por la falta de seguridad en la pista, condición que finalmente llevaría a un grave accidente, cuando el monoplaza de Rolf Stomellen salió volando, acabando con la vida de cinco espectadores. Lombardi había llevado su March Ford hasta el 6to lugar, a dos vueltas del líder Jochen Mass, pero solo obtuvo medio punto ya que la carrera fue suspendida en la vuelta 29. En 1988 fundó Lella Lombardi Autosport, para ayudar a pilotos jóvenes. Chinook MK2 Well - this is a little different to what I’m used to! But then that’s what people probably say when they meet me… At Members Meeting this year I came across this race car that looked like it was out of a sci fi movie! Little did I know it was built and raced by Hungarians George and Rudy Fejer who set up Fejer Racing Car Company when they emigrated to Canada in the early 60s. The brothers were no strangers to racing - having both competed successfully throughout the eastern block on motorbikes, they turned their hand to tuning high performance sports cars. It didn’t take long before deciding to build a race car of their own. You’d be forgiven to think the Chinook mk2 looks like a McLaren, it was indeed heavily influence by them and even used McLaren parts in the Mk1! The body work was heavily inspired by Jim Hall & Hap Sharp who built the Chaparral 2C which debuted in 1965. When the brother’s campaigned the Mk1 on the Can-Am scene - it not only beat other McLaren’s at the time - but was the first car to record an over 100mph average lap of a Canadian circuit! This then created a demand for variations, so in 1966 several Chinook Mk2s were made to order. Including this one. This Chinook Mk2 - a regular at Goodwood - has been raced heavily since its creation, stopping at brief periods for fixes and changing hands. It’s currently owned by New Hampshire based Ray Boissoneau after being through a complete restoration by Lancashire firm Autotune in 2009. In a delightfully surprising impromptu moment, Adam & the team encouraged me to get involved & learn behind the scenes! And I did! ~Surtees TS19~ After Surtees decided to make a controversial sponsorship deal with Durex condoms, he signed Alan Jones to drove the car. Though the car wasn’t ready for the first GP of the 1976 F1 season, it scored points later, on three occasions (7 points) during 1976 for Durex Team Surtees with Alan Jones behind the wheel. In 1977 Vittorio Brambilla scored 6 points with the car sponsored by Beta (still Surtees’s car). Hans Binder, who drove the Durex-sponsored car didn’t score any. Surtees replaced Binder with Rupert Keegan but not him nor Brambilla was able to score points with TS19 in 1978. The car was replaced mid season. Thought out the seasons the car was bought by several other teams, but non could achieve any points scoring finishes. Remembering Carlos Pace, the Brazilian F1 race winner tragically lost in an aircraft accident on this day in 1977, just days after the tragic events of Kyalami. Carlos, a contemporary of Emerson & Wilson Fittipaldi, raced in his homeland before moving to Europe in 1970 where he raced in British F3, winning the BARC Forward Trust series. A move to F1 followed with Frank Williams, and he would start 72 Grands Prix with them, Surtees and Brabham, taking 6 podiums including an emotional win at Interlagos in 1975 - the circuit was later renamed in his honour. He also raced in Can-Am & endurance racing, taking 3rd at Le Mans for Ferrari with Arturo Merzario.
