On a stone podium Narcissus reveals a self-referential loop. Aimed at the ribcage, this pedestal invites an observer to lean in. Alongside the arched companion Echo, the lithe figure of Narcissus was also hard won. Both, for different reasons, resisted shaping and melted in the furnace as if their translucent worlds are hinged to the frailty of an untoughened state. For a long time I would not touch these edges, leaving them sharp and brittle, only now fine polishing the outline to define the inside of the work. These new abstract figures hold danger and difficulty in materials, form and ideas, describing a creative process and the conditions outside. Echo at twilight. More than a decade ago in my studio this sylph came into being. After many broken attempts, glass cuts and curves lost in process, Echo emerged - in every sense a survivor. Coming out of an obsessive focus on materialising a fragile form, this figure was only understood, or at least recognised, on arrival. And then after naming was consigned to the shadows. I wondered if Echo was released that she might fade away entirely. A survey of abstraction centering female energy in a time of potent silences feels like an apt setting for lighting up a mythical being. In 2018-19, I limited my palette to strictly black and white. By using color as simply placeholders in space, my intention was to move closer to sculpture. This 24x60x12, shown here at DZINE gallery, was possibly the most successful. So as part of that it’s our absolute pleasure to announce that we will be working with JILLIAN EDELSTEIN in the coming year to develop a full survey show of her work. Jillian has been at the forefront of photography for more than 3 decades and we’re very exciting about working with her on her first career Retrospective. Our producer @tracymarshallgrant1 says of Jillian “I can’t really say when I first began to work with Jillian. We have overlapped and collaborated so often on so much- projects and productions big and small- that I feel like I’ve known her for decades. Each project we do together she responds to equally proactively, positively and with innovation and energy. She never fails to produce wonderful ideas and stunning work. She is one of those women who you can pick up the phone to and within a short call leave energised and feeling like you can take on the world.
