MEET KOUSUKE KOBAYASHI Born in 1979 in Shibata, Niigata Prefecture, Kobayashi is the owner-chef of Tokiwasushi, a restaurant established by his grandfather in 1954. While studying at a Tokyo culinary school and playing in a band, he worked part-time at a small Japanese restaurant in Tokyo’s Hibiya area. When he married at the age of 27, he started his training as a sushi chef at the restaurant Uoshin in the Naka-Meguro area. In 2010 he joined his family’s restaurant, honing his skills under the guidance of his father. In 2017, when the restaurant reopened after renovations, he assumed the title of third-generation sushi chef. Symbolizing good fortune, Daruma dolls are a traditional craft of Takasaki. When found on produce, this mark signifies that the item has been cultivated using 50% fewer chemical fertilizers and pesticides than standard farming practices. Six items grown in Takasaki bear this certification and are grown by 150 local farmers, including our partner farms: rice, bok choy, onions, broccoli, spinach, and blueberries. 🥬🫐🌾🍃 Moreover, Takasaki provides specially grown agricultural products from this network of farmers for school lunches in all elementary and junior high schools in the former Takasaki City school district, ensuring the provision of safe and dependable produce. Instead, the flavor of the carp belly is light enough to serve as sashimi or as the topping for a simple temari (hand-formed) sushi which Suzuki finishes with a topping of fermented radish mix. This is served as the “shime”, the closing rice dish that tells you dessert will soon be on its way. . But earlier in the meal we have already been served the same humble fish, elevated to new, unlikely heights. “Fillets of the fish (aged for 5 days) are grilled and served over delicate sōmen wheat noodles. Because carp contain numerous tiny bones, their flesh has to be prepared using the same cutting technique as for hamo (pike conger eel): the chef must slice numerous fine incisions through the delicate meat, each just half a millimeter apart.” . Insane knife skills. Lovely fragrant broth from katsuo-kombu-asari (freshwater clam). Zest of citrus. Powdered fermented nozawana greens. Gorobei (local) rice. . “Was it dry aged?” I asked Suzuki. “Only the skin,” he says. “To keep it crisp. The rest of the fillet is wet-aged.” Quite remarkable. . When traveling to Japan, earthquake preparedness is essential due to the country's seismic activity. Japan's Building Standards Act ensures homes and buildings are earthquake-resistant, requiring structures to withstand magnitudes 6 or 7. Since 1981, all buildings must include an earthquake-absorbing design, with standards updated regularly in response to seismic events. Traditional Japanese houses, or Kominka, built over 50 years ago using timber structural methods, are designed to dissipate earthquake forces. These traditional techniques, validated during the Great Hanshin Earthquake, showed that many such houses sustained only minor damages without collapsing, proving their effectiveness. Nevertheless, for personal safety, it's crucial to be informed and prepared. Travelers should familiarize themselves with disaster-related signs, such as evacuation areas and shelters. Hotels and inns are required to display evacuation routes in guidebooks provided in guest rooms. The Japanese government launched a third major round of auctions to select operators for two new offshore wind power areas capable of generating 1.05 gigawatts (GW) in the northern part of the country. One area is on the southern side of the Japan Sea off Aomori prefecture, near Tsugaru city and the town of Ajigasawa which will have a capacity of 600 megawatts (MW). The other will be off the coast of Yamagata prefecture near the town of Yuza and will have a capacity of 450 MW. Both were selected in October as “promotion areas” to develop offshore wind farms and will be fixed-bottom wind farms. The projects could start by mid-2030. The successful bidders will be allowed to use the sea areas for up to 30 years. The auction will run until July 19, with the result expected to come in December, according to a statement issued by Japan’s land and industry ministries. 屋久杉工房の樹行です。 屋久杉に魅せられ、コレクターとなり早40年以上が経ちます。 「自分で持っておきたい！」と買い集めた原木は、多い時でテーブルが200枚以上取れる程の多さに。 当時おそらく屋久島で、販売目的以外で一番原木を所有していたのは私だったと思います。 屋久島でできた友人宅で、皆が集まると、冗談で「樹木さんは、売れる程屋久杉持ってるね」と言われるほど。 原木を眺めて、どんな表情が現れるか、どんな作品ができるのか、と想像にふけるのが一番の楽しみなのです。 「屋久杉龍」は原木のまま、東京に運んできて、どのような作品が作れるかずっと考えていました。 正直なところ、屋久杉の木目が美しいテーブルを作るには、いい形ではなかったのですが、なんだかいつも気になっていて。 眺めれば、眺める程、愛着が沸いて、刃物やのこぎりを入れたりする気にはなれなくなりました。 そんなこんなしているうちに40年が経ち、今ではこれだけ大きな原木を所有しているのは、関東ではおそらく私くらいだと思います。 屋久島には少しあるのかな。 大事にご神木として守ってきた「屋久杉龍」。今年は60年に一度の木の辰年だと言うことを聞いて、「あ～、この時を待っていたのか。切らずによかった！」と言う思いがこみ上げてきました。 多くの人に、屋久杉の魅力は触ってもらうことで、英気をもらえて、また屋久杉も輝きを増すと思っています。 屋久杉という自然と人間とのコミュニケーションは、何物にも代えがたい幸福感を与えてくれます。 みんなの幸せと、希少な屋久杉工芸がこれから1000年先まで受け継いでいけるよう、屋久杉プロジェクトの応援をよろしくお願いします！ #世界遺産 #木の龍 #屋久島 #日本の宝 #屋久杉 #屋久島好きと繋がりたい #辰年 #奇跡の木 #龍 #竜 #パワースポット #頑張れ受験生 #厄年 #yakusugi #WorldHeritage #Yakushima #dragonyear #SustainableJapan #triptojapan #ig_japan #lovers_nippon #ig_photojapan #japan_of_art #japantrip2024 #bestjapanpics #histrip_kagoshima #followme #yakusimalover

こんにちは。 クリエイター龍星です。 屋久杉プロジェクトのロゴ作成にあたり、屋久島や屋久杉について色々勉強しました。知れば知る程、面白く、その歴史の深さに感銘を受けています。 伝統的な屋久杉工芸を、僕たち若い世代に伝えるため、ジオメトリック(幾何学的)なロゴを制作しました。 屋久杉や伝統工芸の従来のイメージではなく、ロゴと工芸品のコントラストによって屋久杉の有機的でパワフルな側面を浮き立たせ、先入観なく体験していただきたいと思い設計しております。 プロジェクトスタッフからは「樹木の感じが新しい。Oの年輪がいいね」と、気に入ってもらえたようです。 皆さんの印象もぜひお聞かせください。 During the creation of the Yakusugi Project logo, I delved into various aspects of Yakushima and Yakusugi. The more I learned, the more fascinated I became by the depth of its history. To pass down the traditional Yakusugi craftsmanship to our younger generation, we designed a geometric logo. Contrary to the conventional image of Yakusugi and traditional crafts, our logo, through the contrast between the logo and the craft, aims to bring out the organic and powerful aspects of Yakusugi. We hope to encourage an unbiased experience. The project team seems to appreciate the design, with comments like " The O's rings symbolize the essence of Yakusugi and present a visually appealing element in the design." Meet Ambassador Eduardo Tempone🇦🇷 Tempone studied law at the National University of Cordoba in Argentina, as well as International Relations at the Catholic University of Cordona. He received his masters’ degree in international affairs at the American University in Washington. Joining the Argentine foreign service in 1986 as a career diplomat, he has held various diplomatic post, including the Republic of Paraguay, the Permanent Mission of Argentina to International Organizations in Geneva, and at the embassy of the Argentine Republic in the US. From 2020, he has served as Argentina’s alternate representative to the Group of 20 at the Argentine Embassy in the US. 樹齢2000年の屋久杉の土埋木（江戸時代に伐採され、林内に放置された幹や根株）に宿った２つの龍。 2024年は甲辰（きのえたつ）。しかも60年に1度の「木の辰（龍）」の年。 陰陽五行説によると「甲」は草木の成長を表す意味があり、植物が成長するようにどんどん勢いを増して増えていくという意味があります。 そのため2024年辰年は、昨年まで努力してきたことが実を結んで成就する年になり、さらなる努力をすることで、成功にスピード感を持って近づける年となると言われています。 今までに準備した結果が実を結ぶ年となりますように！ Two dragons inhabit the world heritage, Yakusugi tree, estimated to be 2000 years old. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, a once-in-60-years “Wooden Dragon” in the Chinese zodiac.
