விடியலை தேடி வானவில் பெண்- I’ve worked on this painting whenever I can since February, and it holds a lot of meaning to me. The piece is reflective of how arranged marriages take away many young indian girls’ freedom. One of the necklaces she is wearing is a thali, the equivalent of a wedding ring in hindu culture. I also wanted to express how many queer people are also trapped in arranged marriages. The girl in the painting has ran away from her arranged marriage and is in hopes of reuniting with her girlfriend. Something most victims of arranged marriages wouldn’t even be able to think of. This painting is heavily connected to the women in my family and freedom they are still struggling to get. Acrylic paint on Styrofoam board. Ashnaa joins the cast of ‘Tale of Orpheus & Eurydice’, inspired by the timeless tale of the two star-crossed lovers. The show is a joyful 45-minute exploration of love, music, and hope for the future. Sharing her music on social media, @ashnaa_ns attracted the attention of Opera North, the show’s producers. “I’ll be playing the protaginist Eurydice, as an Indian classical musician. Merging opera and South Asian music, exploring a range of other musical genres, whilst telling the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice.” A Tale of Orpheus & Eurydice begins at the couple’s engagement party where they reminisce about their very first meeting when they negotiated their way around an unfamiliar city together. Their memories spark a celebration of different musical styles including opera, folk, jazz, blues, soul – and Indian classical music which is where Ashnaa’s own musical journey began. “I grew up listening to, and learning, South Indian classical music: Carnatic music. The pivotal point for me was when I went on this trip to India and watched this amazing festival of loads of artists in one place. After coming back, I just decided to see what else I could do with music, exploring other genres like jazz, funk, R&B. Through that, I decided to work on some of my own compositions and started putting some on social media.” For Tamil music fans, Ashnaa is performing a song in Tamil, as-well as her first single which audiences will be able to hear live during the show. Through his paintings Anojan considers war atrocities and what the ground, humans and other living species have witnessed. For the exhibition entitled #LanguageisMigrant, the artist presents a 20-foot-long canvas that undulates and spreads across the space, charting amorphous forms. It immerses the visitor, even if only for a few moments, in vignettes of mass destruction that marked the landscape of his childhood. The distortion and mobile contours of this work are indicative of living without a permanent residence for years, moving from shelter to shelter amidst dangerous terrains. Vinoja Tharmalingam is a visual artist and activist from Kilinochchi. She has a BA in Fine Arts from Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the Eastern University, Batticaloa where she is a lecturer in the Department of Visual and Technological Arts. Vinoja’s artworks are a visual documentation of stories she collects from her community, especially people living in Mullaitivu, the place she identifies as home. Using embroidery and painting as her artistic materials she delicately stitches together a poetic retelling of stories of her people's day-to-day life in this former warzone. These narratives are sensitively and meaningfully communicated through her chosen art making process, embroidery on fabric, symbolising healing, and mending. The fragments piece together using symbols in a very contemporary abstract aesthetic the stories of those affected by the years of war especially the war injured. For those who live with disabilities, the scars of the war are a daily reminder of history branded on their bodies. The fragmentary, ethereal appearance of the artworks reference the transient lives that many of those who were affected by the war have experienced and still do to this day. International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances is held annually on the 30th August. Enforced disappearance has frequently been used as a strategy to spread terror within the society. The feeling of insecurity generated by this practice is not limited to the close relatives of the disappeared, but also affects their communities and society as a whole. Once largely the product of military dictatorships, enforced disappearances can nowadays be perpetrated in complex situations of internal conflict, especially as a means of political repression of opponents. Of particular concern are: • the ongoing harassment of human rights defenders, relatives of victims, witnesses and legal counsel dealing with cases of enforced disappearance; • the use by States of counter-terrorist activities as an excuse for breaching their obligations; • and the still widespread impunity for enforced disappearance. @shawmya_ Shawmya Thilipkumar is an education science student from Zurich. Her art enables her to live out the Tamil culture in the western world. She also sees it as an instrument of resistance against injustice, oppression and the structural genocide against the Tamils.
