Curious Tea’s Matcha Genmaicha represents the coming together of two of Japan’s most iconic teas. The golden toasty barley-water smoothness of Genmaicha and the, um, Matcha-ness of Matcha. (I’m still not really sure how I feel about Matcha, to be honest. I don’t think it’s very me.) It’s been a while since I had a @curioustealtd tea, and you know I really should do it more often. They are purveyors of astonishingly good tea. This one was a Great Taste Award winner, so they’re really not mucking about here. I sought out a Japanese blend because Mr Tea Fancier got a free sample of Boba Milk Tea Mochi from Costco and I wanted to photograph it for posterity before I ate it. (And yes, of course, that is completely sensible and worthwhile. I’m sure future generations of the Tea Fancier family will be delighted that this moment was recorded.) Luckily, I had the foresight to wait until I’d finished drinking the Matcha Genmaicha before I ate it. Eating an eye-watering sweet but otherwise unremarkable blob of brown sugar and pectin would have rather blunted my abilities to enjoy a fine-quality, exquisitely produced Genmaicha. Today’s tea review is Vanilla Tea from @twiningsuk. One of the many nuggets of wisdom I acquired at the Twinings Tea Masterclass was this: if you want to determine whether a box of Twinings Tea is a domestic or international edition, look at the royal crest above the logo. If there’s an arch, it’s a non-UK product; if it’s flat, it’s a box for the UK market. I mention it because this here Twinings Vanilla Tea is one of them for-sale-to-foreigners blends. I know I have a number of people of the American persuasion amongst my readership, so this blend may be commonplace where you are. You probably pick it up alongside your zucchinis and cilantro at Walmart or something. But here in Blighty, you need to travel all the way to London to purchase Twinings Vanilla Tea. (Or just buy it off the internet, obvs.) So, is it worth going to great lengths like travelling to the capital city or moving to Foreign to procure this tea? Meh, not so much. It’s oddly sweet for a start. Its ingredients consist of (non-specific) black tea, ‘natural vanilla flavourings’, ‘other natural flavourings’, and ‘flavouring’. That’s a lot of flavouring. I’m not sure what the ‘other’ non-vanilla flavourings are supposed to be, but at a guess I’d say sugar and condensed milk. The only Twinings vanilla blends aimed at UKers on the shelves right now are herbal nonsenses, which is a bit of a swizz. The international market, on the other hand, has three different proper-tea-and-vanilla offerings: Earl Grey Creamy Vanilla, Chai French Vanilla and this one. I didn’t like this Vanilla Tea. It’s artificial and sweet and not nearly as much fun as it should be. And yet, I still really, really want to try those other two teas on the list. I like Earl Grey. I like spicy chais. I like vanilla. What could possibly go wrong? Even the fact that I have just written a review basically answering that exact question, has done nothing to deter my enthusiasm. I keep forgetting to share photos of my lovely teapot from Upper Street Home. This is their Cotswold Borosilicate Glass Teapot. I absolutely love the contrast of the glass teapot along with the ceramic lid and infuser basket. My tea is a sample I received from Mixala Chai. This is the Toffee Mint. This chai is a blend of black tea, cardamon, fennel and ginger, with roasted dandelion root and peppermint. The aroma of toffee whilst steeping was intoxicating, you could taste the toffee and mint but it was much milder than I was expecting. Afternoon tea at Cavendish Restaurant, Chatsworth. Establishment and Ambience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Set in the picturesque 18th Century stables, the restaurant is just beautiful, with lovely decor and huge glass windows. Level of Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I absolutely love Chatsworth and always hope the level of service improves but it always seems to have lots of room for improvement. I had to ask for milk several times before I receive more. Asking for more tea seemed like an inconvenience. I must just be so unlucky at where I sit each time I visit. Food ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Again plenty of room for improvement. The sandwiches were great, lovely selection and I enjoyed the variety of bread. Due to my fish allergy we were asked to select another sandwich. Although I would like to add the egg salad was very salty. The scones were a disappointment, rather soft, just really didn’t have a nice enjoyable texture and the jam too runny. The petite fours were not enjoyed by any of us. The lemon rhubarb was just way too tart, none of us managed past one small spoon. The carrot cake was too heavy and dry, and the flowerpot was cute to look at but I really didn’t like the runny strawberry center. Unfortunately on a whole we were disappointed. Tea and Tea Ware ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tea of your choice from Northern tea merchants of chesterfield. I really enjoyed the Keemun but wasn’t impressed with the Rwandan which was a CTC. No one liked the White tea that was served as a palate cleanser. The plates, sugar, cream and cup and saucer were beautiful pieces from Wedgwood but the teapots were plain white. Value for money ⭐️⭐️ For £49.50, although I absolutely love Chatsworth I always come away from Afternoon Tea feeling very disappointed, so much room for improvement. I have taken afternoon tea here so many times but it never changes, in future I’m going to pass and eat in the cafe instead. There are two very pleasing things about @twiningsuk Nutty Chocolate Flavour Assam Tea. The first is that it’s an absolutely delightful hazelnutty chocolatey black tea blend, which is a pleasure to drink. The second is that after you realise that you haven’t got much more to say about it other than it’s an absolutely delightful hazelnutty chocolatey black tea blend, which is a pleasure to drink, and start googling interesting hazelnut facts, you find yourself sucked into a series of praline-scented internet rabbit holes. Did you know that Ferrero uses 25% of all the hazelnuts grown in the world in Nutella and their eponymous Rocher? There’s also evidence that people in the UK have been eating hazelnuts since 6000 BCE, but as tea and chocolate didn’t make it to these shores until the early 17th century, then a nutty chocolate tea wasn’t even a hypothetical possibility for another 7600 years. The Celts considered the hazelnut to be a source of esoteric wisdom. In Irish folklore, An Bradán Feasa, the Salmon of Knowledge ate nine hazelnuts which fell into the Well of Wisdom from nine hazel trees and gained all the knowledge of everything ever. (He wasn’t the Salmon of Knowledge before he ate the nuts, obviously. He was just a regular salmon.) Clearly, knowing everything ever isn’t all it’s cracked up to be because he was caught, cooked and eaten by Fionn mac Cumhaill, otherwise known as Finn MacCool. (I was quite amused that one of the Amazing Hazelnut Facts web pages mistakenly called him Phil MacCool. Presumably, they were getting him muddled up with 80s comedian Phil Cool.) Fionn could then access all the wisdom of the world if he stuck his thumb in his mouth and recited an incantation. I’m a bit confused about some of the details to be honest, but fair play to the lad. It must be quite hard to look wise when you’re sucking your thumb. So, what I’ve discovered is there is a link between hazelnuts and wisdom. And while I’m not saying that Twinings Nutty Chocolate Flavour Assam Tea comes with a cast-iron guarantee of wisdom-imbuing properties, it’s got to be worth a go, hasn’t it? It’s certainly a good reason to have another cup, I reckon.

Good morning from Texas. I’m heading to the spa this morning so it’s tea to go. This is the Special Jasmine Black Keemun. I have been drinking and purchasing this tea for some time now as it’s absolutely delightful, it makes a nice change from the Jasmine green teas. The Jasmine is nice and light so you can still taste the actual Keemun but it has that lovely mellow floral finish. This delightful sweet Keemun tea comes from the province of Anhui in the eastern part of China. Careful production of the tea and the jasmine flowers creates a deep golden cup with sweet, floral taste. The fragrant floral aroma comes from the jasmine blossoms which are freshly collected before the midday heat. They are promptly delivered to the factory so that they are on the tea when they completely open at lunchtime. The black tea is prepared for blending by heating the leaves slightly in high humidity, which opens the cells a little. With the now prepared leaf the fresh jasmine blossoms can be mixed so that the fine precious essential oils can be transferred from the blossoms to the tea. This process is performed 3-5 times in different batches and are then blended. Recently, I went to a tea-tasting masterclass at #twinings with my lovely friend Rebecca, who was given the tickets as a birthday present. It was hosted at Twinings’ London flagship store at 216 Strand, which has been a Twinings tea-selling establishment for approximately a million years. (I just checked, and apparently, it's 307 years, which is pretty much the same as a million years if you round up to the nearest million.) We were each given six teas to try, one from each tea type: white, yellow, green, oolong, black and pu’erh. The teas we tried were Chakra Silver Tips from Indonesia, Hua Shan Huang Ya, Long Jing, Tie Guan Yin, 2nd Flush Darjeeling and Tuo Cha Pu’erh. We were given a handy tasting notes sheet on which to record our impressions of each tea and on which I completely failed to write anything useful at all. They were all jolly nice, though. Taken from the April Tea Lovers Tea Club Tea box is Mochatava. Dark chocolate Pu-erh blended with an Ethiopian coffee that has citrus and berry notes that all combine to make a tremendous sweet chocolatey cup. I do add a little organic whole milk and sugar to this blend. I just want to say that I am not a coffee fan at all, and don’t usually drink or eat anything that is coffee related, other than tiramisu (I love my tiramisu). But I really enjoy this blend. To me it’s more chocolate, with just a kiss of light coffee at the end.
