A few weeks ago I had to call the school to excuse Tessa for being sick. The receptionist asked how Tessa was doing and I explained that she was pretty miserable. The receptionist said, "Oh I hope she feels better soon.. That girl just does something to my heart." I knew exactly what she meant because Tessa does the same thing to my heart. A couple of days ago, we were out shopping and Tessa kept trying to put items into a woman's cart. I kept apologizing, but the woman stopped her conversation on the phone to tell me, "You're so lucky to have her." She wasn't bothered by Tessa's antics, and she knew. She knew the fact the world keeps trying to hide as a secret.. we are so lucky to have her. We do receive judgement. We do experience criticism. But these stories prove that some people are beginning to understand. They see the value in Tessa and others like her. That gives me so much hope for Tessa's future. I wish I could have had a glimpse of these moments the day she was born. But hopefully sharing them here will give a future " lucky few" mom a glimpse into her child's future. I know not all prayers are answered in the ways we would hope. Six years ago when we prayed for Tessa to get better, we learned she had leukemia. Our prayers were answered and she did get better, it just took over two years to get there. This past month we have been praying for Tessa's labs to normalize. She had one number that was "off" so the oncologist asked us to re-draw her labs. We got the results yesterday and our prayers were answered just how we had hoped. Her blood work came back great and I have been crying tears of gratitude and relief all day. When your child is diagnosed with cancer, you don't realize you have been given a burden for life. The fear and worry will always be there. I don't think there is any escape from that. But for today I'm going to TRY to focus on the fact that Tessa is healthy right now and let go of the worry. Thank you for all the prayers and support. There are no words for how grateful I am for it. We shouldn't have to do labs for a year and that is a huge milestone. These last 3 years, we've been doing regular blood draws and I feel like that almost made it a little harder to heal. On the other hand though, it also has been a bit of a safety net. We have had reassurance throughout these last 3 years that her labs looked good. Now, I have conflicting feelings because we won't have that reassurance for an entire year. But I'm going to do my best to move forward with gratitude in my heart and hope on my mind. So here's to one year of being present and staying optimistic. Way to go Tessa!!! Yesterday marked her third round of chemotherapy, and we're delighted to report that her recent blood results have shown she's fighting fit to continue her treatment. Tessa's resilience and determination have been truly remarkable! If things continue on this encouraging path, she's scheduled for her final chemo session in just four weeks. After unavoidable delays, we are thrilled to report that The Sunshine Cart made it’s first official rounds in the St. Jude Clinic at OSF this week! We hope to have it on the pediatric inpatient floors soon. Child Life passed along that the cart was a big hit and shared the following: “There were SO many positive comments about the cart, and it absolutely sprinkled in much needed Sunshine on the cloudy and dreary day. This is an amazing gift, and I can see Tessa's sweet smile, thinking about how proud she would be for impacting so many other families.
