Last December, Brayden had a golf lesson with a private coach that opened up new opportunities for his golf game. The coach invited Brayden to play on his 2024 @pgajrleague golf team, which is the direction we were hoping to take Brayden’s golf game in the new year. Not only did the coach invite Brayden, he wanted him. The coach looked past the disability and saw his ABILITIES. He saw Brayden’s talent. He wanted Brayden on his team!⛳️ Brayden has been practicing with the Cabarrus CC 13U PGA Jr team the past few weeks and played his first tournament with the team last night against Cabarrus CC 17U. As Brayden stepped out on that course he became a self advocate walking the course making a path for other individuals with Down syndrome. He became a team player competing in his first tournament. He continued making a difference in more ways than just a golf game. There are no words to express how proud we are of this kid. He loves the game of golf and continues getting stronger with each swing. Brayden did amazing at his first tournament!! It’s not an easy sport and the coach expects the same from Brayden as the rest of the team players. I turned 3 months old yesterday! I’m thriving at home, and my parents and family and friends are rocking caring for me with all my equipment. Tomorrow I have eye surgery to investigate some damage my mom discovered while I was in the NICU. They’ll be reattaching my retina and collecting cells to rule out retinoblastoma, a type of eye cancer. On my second surgery and I just turned 3 months old! What a wonderful and proud day for so many of our families. Today we had our Mansfield show at Portland College. Headlined by our Mansfield Dance Warriors groups, both junior and senior, it showcased some amazing dancing from all the dancers. They were joined, in the show, by ‘Sing & Sign Together’, our NDSSG Makaton choir. And 13 of the Nottingham Dance Warriors joined the Mansfield Warriors to perform a special rendition of the Fight Song. Thanks go to all our wonderful dancers, Lianne the dance teacher and all the amazing volunteers, without whom the groups wouldn’t function. And also to Jess and all the members of the choir. Refreshments were provided by the mums, including some beautiful homemade cakes At the end, we drew a raffle that some of the mums had organised, with 43 prizes! Sicken helg ändå! Mamma har varit i Stockholm på årsmöte med @svdownforeningen Hon har fått fortsatt förtroende av medlemmarna i landet att sitta kvar i Riksstyrelsen under ytterligare 2 år.. Unsere heutige „Eiszeit“ in der @eisdielenart_herbolzheim war eher zu einer Stammtisch bzw. Frühschoppen Zeit, mal abgesehen vom wahrscheinlich höheren Niveau, haben wir einfach noch die trockene Phase des Tages genutzt. Das ebenfalls angenehme zu dieser Uhrzeit, der Spielplatz war angenehm leer, so dass der kleine Mann auch mal auf die große Rutsche konnte, ohne das Gewusel von anderen Kindern. Leider hatten wir Schaufel und Co. vergessen, aber zum Glück hat man ja zwei gesunde Hände, um im Sand zu buddeln. Als der Regen einsetzte sind wir dann fluchtartig heim geradelt. Nachmittags haben wir uns dann mit Bau von Mats neuem Lieblingsspielzeug vertrieben. Vor einigen Wochen haben wir diese Kugelbahn von @hubelino (unbezahlte Werbung, da selbst gekauft) üentdeckt. Seitdem ist Mats schwer davon begeistert. A year ago today, it was a Friday night, around 630pm, I received the call telling me that the amniocentesis confirmed what I already knew in my heart to be true - the baby I was carrying in my womb had Down Syndrome. It had been 2 days since I got the amnio done and I spent those two days worrying and crying and praying that the 1% inaccuracy of the NIPT testing would be our reality. I wanted so badly for the doctor to tell me that you didn’t have that extra copy of chromosome 21, that it was a mistake in the NIPT results and that you were “normal” (the word is “typical”). But that’s the thing… God doesn’t make mistakes. He knew exactly what He was doing when He knit you together in my womb. I regret every second I ever prayed for you to be different than who God created you to be. I couldn’t imagine who you’d be without that extra chromosome. I couldn’t imagine my days without the indescribable warmth and light that emanates from your little soul. Your eyes are like windows to the purest form of love and I couldn’t imagine how differently it would feel to look at you if you weren’t exactly who you are. Here we are, a year later, and you’re kicking butt in recovery from your second open heart surgery, you’re meeting all of your milestones, and you bring nothing but joy to everyone around you. The last year has been HARD, but you are SO worth it. Since last night, we’ve finally done it! We are free from the nipple shield. A reason to celebrate! 🥳🤱I’ve been breastfeeding for about 2 months now, every 2-3 hours, that makes in total about 250 hours and 15,000 minutes, and I can wholeheartedly say that it’s been a fantastic experience and at the same time one of the most demanding full-time jobs I’ve ever had. This is especially understood by any woman who finds herself alone on the couch at 3 a.m., pumping and trying to stay awake. It’s no wonder mothers burn an extra 500 calories a day. But it’s also a tremendous joy because Arturo and I have managed to overcome this challenge together despite the skepticism of many pediatricians and the weight fluctuations right after birth. And we did it without artificial milk and bottles but with a lot of patience, perseverance, dedication, and conviction. Many had told me before: You have to stay strong, breastfeeding a child with Down syndrome is not easy. But it is above all the greatest gift I could give him at the beginning of his life. Now he has well-trained jaw muscles and the superpower for his immune system packed for the future. And about that, I am not only happy but also incredibly proud. What makes a perfect family holiday: happiness and special memories 🫶🏻 It doesn’t matter where we are in the world as long as we are together. We had the most incredible time, we laughed so much, ate lots of ice cream and made memories to last a lifetime! Gabe had his very first track meet today with @specialolympicsoh ! He did both track and field events. He got 1st in the Assisted 50M and 2nd in softball throw. There were a lot of people there and I’m so proud of how well he handled everything overall. We had some small meltdowns, and he was definitely tired, but it was a great experience for him. It was also amazing to see how he listened to what he was taught in practice and applied it to his events today. “I pick Dad!” This is what I hear from both big kids EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. He’s the fun parents and the favorite and he’s also super involved which the fun parent often isn’t. They love him sooo much and I love watching that. Reese wants to be just like his dad in all the ways. Chris is a very hands on dad and he plays with them daily. Reese gets upset each time he leaves for work and all the kids including Ellie rush to the door when they hear that he’s home. We are lucky to have you ccalassy Thanks for being their Dada! Yesterday Macy had her first homecoming dance 🪩💃🏻♥️. Unfortunately, I was out of town 💔. It made me so sad to not be there to help her get ready and see her off, and then it filled my heart to the brim to see how so many people gathered around her to support her and make her first homecoming dance one to remember. I wasn’t there to do her hair but our trusted and adored babysitter did her hair and make-up while Josh was at a swim meet with Truly 🌟. Then her best friend Stella came over with her mom jills1880 and helped her into her dress and morgan_sandler showed up with his camera to take these stunning photos. Her dad joshavis of course, made it all happen. I know I have talked candidly about how difficult community and friendship has been for Macy. Honestly? As soon as I heard about the homecoming dance the thing that kept me up at night was thinking of Macy experiencing her first homecoming dance alone. And while there is still much lacking when it comes to friends at school (hopefully that will change soon!!! 🤞🏼) there is no doubt that this girl is cherished and adored by so many. Yesterday mom Fry would have been 75 years old, We decided to dress up and go out and celebrate her birthday and I think it’ll be a new tradition in her honor as well as papa Fry. I have a lot of unprocessed thoughts and emotions about the loss of my mother in law. Who truly was like a second mom to me but also a best friend. Witnessing and experiencing the illness she suffered was traumatic for all of us. There are no words for how difficult and painful ALS is and was for her and for all of us. And when we lost her, Grace was just starting her cancer battle. She was fighting for her life. We were fighting for her life. I couldn’t be at Sandy’s side like I wanted to be. I couldn’t be there for my husband and sister like I wanted to be. I had to take my daughter in for intense chemotherapy. I had to say my goodbyes to my best friend over the phone while driving my daughter to the hospital. I know this is a lot of hard things to share. But I still have yet to process any of this. Years of survival mode. So much happening all at once. Trauma changes you. Forever. I miss you Sandy. I could always be completely real, myself, and transparent with you about every single thing in life. You understood me better than anyone ever has. You just knew my heart. And I miss you. I love you with all my heart and soul. Thank you for being the human you were. Someone who loved her people more fiercely than anything. Who stood by us stronger than anything I’ve ever known. It is October 1st which means it’s Down Syndrome Awareness Month! We’ve got a few new followers on here so it’s also time for an introduction! Hi! We are the Avis family. We are a multi-ethnic, multi-ability family brought together through adoption. We are the creators and founders of “The Lucky Few”, a phrase and ethos I created 15 years ago which is now embraced by the Global Down Syndrome community, meaning there are few of us who love a person with Down Syndrome and those of us to do are so very lucky. One of our goals around here is to shift the Down syndrome narrative. Attaching the word “lucky” to the diagnosis has been major progress in doing just that. What an honor and thrill!
