I'm at my new QTH! The family survived the move from a ground floor apart to a two storage house! 😅 I still have to clear the garage so I can turn it into a ham shack / gym. So almost all my radio stuff is still packed in boxes. 😟 But the cravings got too strong. I dug up my IC-705 and a small magnetic loop and started to play around! I got picked up by the rbn, but no qso's where made.....yet! 😉😂 I did get to practice sending "cq cq cq de sm2yuw sm2yuw k" in cw! 🤣 Well, we will see if my 10watts will be enough for a qso soon. Continuano le mie prodezze "HI" in telegrafia questa qsl devo ringraziare EQSL.CC . Vi riporto un episodio divertente. Sono così scarso in CW che una volta volevo testare la mia filare random in 30 metri. L’accordo è perfetto … riesco a “calare” con l’adattatore il ROS meglio che in tutte le altre bande. A questo punto decido di fare una prova. Batto un classico CQ CQ … aggiungo il DE … poi per non fare il pirata scrivo il mio nominativo IZ1KVQ. Stavo già spegnendo quando sento la risposta. Romeo sicuro … un numero ??? due numeri??? un Carlie poi nebbia che sia un OM russo??? Batto un punto interrogativo (TI TI TAA TAA TI TI) ed il corrispondente molto gentilmente e piano piano mi ha ribattuto 2 volte il suo nominativo ma purtroppo il paziente corrispondente rimane ancora ignoto. Nella mia mente scende un nebbione fitto capisco che Romeo??Ciaqrlie?? conferma il mio nominativo e mi assegna 599 …. Just a little interesting tidbit I thought I’d share with the typosphere about the 1916 Canadian Northern Railway Underwood telegrapher’s Mill I’m currently working on. I’ve been collecting Canadian railway Mills (typewriters specifically made to transcribe telegraph messages) for over 30+ years and have amassed around a dozen or so machines from the Canadian Northern, Grand Trunk Pacific, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways spanning from the 1910s through to the late 1950s. Universally the typeface is 10 CPI (for maximum visibility in reading train orders in low light), however this particular machine prints in 12 CPI. That’s something I’ve never seen before, definitely not in person or evidence of in old train orders, station correspondence or telegrams. The provenance of this machine is bulletproof, it was 100% used by the Canadian National Railway in train order service, but as to why it is 12 CPI, I have no idea. The whole point of the Mill in railway service was to transcribe telegraph messages in the most visible print, making it smaller seems counterintuitive to me… Space on the forms wasn’t an issue so, I have no clue. Just for my own curiosity, I took quick type samples from a few of my easily accessible Mills for comparison (including a Royal Canadian Navy Mill). Ever wondered who the girl in this photograph is? It is Pia’s mother Birgitte Justine Piparajik Arqe at age 18. The photo is taken in 1947 in Ittoqqortoormiit, Scoresbysund by a telegraphist named Sven Lund Jensen from Denmark. Pia’s mother is a recurring figure in several of Pia’s works appropriated from the photographs of the Danish telegraphist. This iconic yellow-toned image first appeared in Pia’s 1995 essay ‘Ethno-Aesthetics’ with the caption ‘Scoresbysund, 1948’. In 1834, an English man performed an experiment, with his device of #revolving_mirror, to measure the velocity of #electricity in a wire. His results gave a calculated velocity of 288,000 miles per second, that is, faster than what we now know to be the speed of light (186,000 mi/s), but were nonetheless an interesting approximation. With this experiment, the man achieved renown amongst scientists of that time. Later by his suggestion, (in 1862) #LéonFoucault and #HippolyteFizeau used this revolving mirror to measure the velocity of #light. That English man is our "scientist of the day" today. It's the birthday of Sir #CharlesWheatstone, one of the most celebrated scientists & inventors of his time - - - (Scientist of the Day - 06 February) In 1834, Wheatstone was appointed professor of experimental philosophy at #King’s College, London, where he used the above mentioned experiment to measure the speed of electricity in a conductor. But he is best known for his contributions in the development of the Wheatstone bridge, which is used to measure an unknown electrical resistance, and as a major figure in the development of #telegraphy. Although wheatstone bridge was first devised by #SamuelHunterChristie (a British physicist and mathematician), who published it in 1833. The method was neglected until Wheatstone brought it into notice in 1843. His paper, entitled, "An Account of Several New Processes for Determining the Constants of a Voltaic Circuit", abounds with simple and practical formulae for the calculation of currents and resistances by Ohm's law. He introduced a unit of resistance, namely, a foot of copper wire weighing one hundred grains (6.5 g) and showed how it might be applied to measure the length of wire by its resistance. He was awarded a medal for his paper by the Royal Society. He was #knighted in 1868.
