NIGHT by Elie Wiesel Der er skrevet meget om 2. Verdenskrig, intet af det er smukt eller sødsuppe. Det er uanset afsender barskt, grotesk og absolut hjerteskærende, så hvorfor læser det? I flere år efter krigen var der ingen der ville udgive jødernes fortællinger om deres oplevelser, verden skulle videre, verden skulle glemme den skamflet af historieskrivning, som Tyskland havde ført pennen over. Heldigvis tog et fransk trykkeri Elies bog til sig i 1958, heldigvis kom flere bøger til og heldigvis var der nogen der nægtede at fortie og glemme de pinsler som bl.a. jøder måtte lide og dø under. For han var nød til at skrive “to help prevent history from repeating itself”. Verden er muligvis ikke blevet meget klogere, en sørgelig sandhed, men vi skal fortsat ikke glemme og ej lade nye generationer glemme. Denne bog “måtte jeg læse” sagde min datter til mig. Hun er i 8th grade i Middleschool og de har 2. Verdenskrig som emne. Denne bog er skrevet i 1958, genudgivet et hav af gange, Elie modtog Nobels fredspris for den i 1986 og den er fortsat lige aktuel. En jødisk dreng fra en landsby i Transsylvanien, en landsby der ikke tro på rygterne om tyskernes kommende, men pludselig ser sig selv fanget i en ghetto. En landsby der i løbet af få timer sættes på kvægvogne og fragtes til Auschwitz. En dreng på 15 der af en anden fange får anbefalet at lyve sig ældre, hvilket betyder han ved ankomst sendes til højre og ikke ventre, hvilket er vejen hans mor og øvrige søskende sendes, for at komme direkte til gaskammerne. Dette er krigen fra en 15 åriges øjne, dette er frygt, håbløshed, modløshed og overlevelse på trods. This week I have listened to "Morgon og kveld" (Morning and Evening) by Jon Fosse on #storytel and it's one of the most beautiful, Sad and profound reading experiences I've had in a while. A child who will be named Johannes is born. An old man named Johannes dies. Between these two points Jon Fosse gives us the details of an entire life, starkly compressed. Beginning with Olai, a fiskerman's thoughts as his wife goes into labor and his son Johannes is born. Then the second part we meet Johannes as an old man. His wife is dead and so is his friend Peter. He wakes up to a new day when everything is exactly the same, yet totally different. Třetí četba, po třiceti letech, slavného románu Láska za časů cholery (1985), který je čtenářsky asi nejoblíbenějším dílem kolumbijského spisovatele Gabriela Garcíi Márqueze (1927–2014), nositele Nobelovy ceny za literaturu (1982). Vedle románů Sto roků samoty (1967) a Podzim patriarchy (1975) a novely Kronika ohlášené smrti (1981) je to autorovo nejznámější dílo. Garcíu Márqueze řadím mezi své nejoblíbenější spisovatele. Tento román jsem poprvé četl asi v 17, pak ve 20; ve stejné době jsem dvakrát četl i Sto roků samoty, takže i k tomuto milovanému románu se teď vrátím. Co napsat o tak slavném díle? Skvěle se tu projevilo Márquezovo vypravěčské umění a bohatý a šťavnatý jazyk, díky nimž povýšil poněkud sentimentální příběh na velký čtenářský zážitek. Je to autorův nejdelší román a já jsem si ho i potřetí velmi užil, navíc po tak dlouhé době a ve zcela jiném, zralém věku, s jinými osobními zkušenostmi a zážitky a také se znalostí celého Gabova díla. A ocenit je potřeba i vynikající český překlad. Hlavní postavy jsou tři. Florentino Ariza, jeho dávná láska Fermina Dazová a její manžel Juvenal Urbino. Když doktor Urbino zemře, osloví Florentino po 51 letech Ferminu s tím, že ji nikdy nepřestal milovat. Naplní se konečně jejich láska? A co všichni tři za ty desítky let prožili? O tom je tento nádherný román, o lásce a jejích rozličných podobách, o vášni, touze, manželství, čekání, stárnutí a stáří... Z pewnością ważna i wartościowa książka o odchodzeniu, rozliczaniu się z własnym losem, podsumowaniach, tych osobistych i tych o szerszym zasięgu. Ale jednak dla mnie przede wszystkim to krytyka apartheidu panującego przez długie lata w RPA. Za dużo tu publicystycznych w swym wydźwięku passusów dotyczących polityki państwa, rasizmu, klasizmu itp. Gubi się w nich głęboki humanizm przesłania powieści. A może właśnie w ten sposób miały być rozłożone akcenty? Today I’m letting my artistic bro Papi show off his latest creation: a purple and brown cross painting 🟣🟤 just like Asle did in “I Is Another.” IYKYK. This is the second volume in Jon Fosse’s “Septology” that contains books III-V. This picks up where we left off with Asle the artist 🎨 in “The Other Name” (first volume). Asle drives to the gallery in Bjørgvin 🇳🇴 to drop off some of his paintings for an exhibition 🖼️ Along the way, he reminisces quite heavily about his childhood, adolescence, and his life as a young married man. Some of Fosse’s devices I find so very curious and fascinating at the same time include: 🔸 He starts off each book with Asle seeing himself standing in front of one of his own paintings that he finds particularly captivating: the simple cross with purple and brown brushstrokes 💜🤎 🔸 Asle always seems disoriented at the beginning of each book wondering what day of the week it is. Each book (but IV) in fact takes place on a different consecutive day of the week during Advent. 🔸 Each book closes with Asle in a meditative state, praying in Latin 🙏 Now I’ll move on to “A New Name”, the volume that contains the final 2 books in “Septology.” If you had asked me last year whether I had any interest in reading a seven book series, I’d have told you absolutely not. Будь-які прикметники, які б я використала, не віддадуть належного значення цій книжці. Надзвичайно? Шокуюче? Усе це коптили. Але це унікальна і важлива книга. Особливо для нас, тих із нас, хто живе на Сході й ніколи не втече від примари великого ведмедя. Ця книга вчить вас, що росіяни завдали собі принаймні стільки ж шкоди, скільки й нам, іншим, своїм програшам. І я не знаю, як Алексієвич вдається знайти свідків, які, окрім подій, які вони пережили, ще й такі ж виразні, як великі російські письменники. Вона називає їх «гідами», тими, хто веде її через людські всесвіти. Але я не маю дивуватися, коли незважаючи на злидні, голод, злидні, війни, злочини, зґвалтування, убитих дітей, батьків, братів, нестерпність життя... всі говорять про свої повні бібліотеки. Принаймні до «демократії». Книга Алексієвич не є певним прикладом того, що робить радянську людину. Це набір окремих голосів, кожен з яких пропонує проблиск дуже особистого та суб’єктивного досвіду. The New Republic критикувала Алексієвич за підтасування заяв її свідків і редагування їх, щоб надати їм більшої літературної сили. Я згодна з автором статті, який стверджує, що це мало зворотний ефект. Через редагування Алексієвич свідчення її співбесідників часто звучать одноманітно: втрачаються характеристики особи, яка їх видає, оскільки ми не можемо почути її регіональні акценти, модель їхнього мовлення і навіть фальшиві ноти, що часто можна знайти під час реального інтерв’ю. Розриваюча книжка. Читати спокійно неможливо незалежно від того, чию історію читаєш – типового «совка» чи людину сучасних поглядів. Людські долі, якими пройшовся каток історії. Це завжди цікаво і завжди болюче. Історії радянських людей, які не можуть пристосуватися до реальності без союзу, бо там їм було добре, бо там вони були як всі і не відчували себе на обочині життя, і історії людей, які вважають союз злом, бо так чи інакше або постраждали від нього або задихались в його тісних обіймах. За розповідями тих, хто жалкує за «совком» і тих, хто радіє, що він канув в минуле, яскраво проявляються людські типажі.

“I just sit and stare into the empty nothingness, and probably in a way I am that empty nothingness I’m looking at.” . The first time I entered the snow laden world of Jon Fosse’s Septology I treaded heavy and with swift eyes darting from page to page not fully engaging with what I was taking in. Now one year later and this same artistic world of godly delight was taken in with slow ease and purpose, and what a miraculous world I missed, the way that Fosse writes imitates a few of my favorite writers but he really has his own inevitable way of doing things, dare I say “Fosseian?” I will say this book demands a slowing down, a careful attention, Fosse’s prose is sparse yet evocative with a keen attention to detail that imbues every scene with a sense of depth and resonance. His use of language is quiet and elliptical yet possessing of a lyrical quality that is both haunting and beautiful. Fosse’s attention to rhythm and cadence creates a sense of musicality that draws us deeper into his novel . Septology expands on many themes such as the nature of our existence, a sense of otherness, the mirroring lives of his characters that question a “What If” in our lives and shows us the two separate paths we can possibly take, religion and mortality mixed with memories flood the pages of Septology creating a whirlwind of emotions, causing us, the reader, the reflect upon our own lives and what choices we have made until now. The structure also mirrors the fragmented nature of memory and consciousness as events unfold out of sequence, past, present, and future meld together in a seamless continuum in a stream of conscious narrative lasting the entirety of the seven books. The Buried Giant - Kazuo Ishiguro. Ishiguro is a favourite of mine. Both his work and his interviews are beautiful, consistent and genuine. Reading his work almost always leaves you both peaceful and deep in thought. The Buried Giant though left me a little disappointed. It is crafted in his inimitable way - soft dialogue, repeated phrases, gentle eloquence. This has all of that, however the understated style he is famous and revered for leaves the final part of The Buried Giant somewhat hollow, or at least less touched. The story which meanders through medieval England, using place, clan and gender to define and examine roles, is typically slow paced. It may just be me, but all other Ishiguro novels have had the underlying intent and moralistic questions present enough to be sure of what you are being asked to ponder. To look forward to a specific quandary you will be required to make judgement on. The Buried Giant never seemed to grab my attention or hone my interest towards a particular focus, save for the banishing of the mist and the pros and cons of this occurring. Not to say the read is difficult or onerous, but Ishiguro’s slow pace lends itself towards needing an outcome that explains the specific and detailed narratives he is so famous for. Whilst the end of this novel gives enough to ponder, it didn’t quite have the lasting impact and deep thoughtfulness that Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun had. I do like to indulge in his work though, and his style will always be something I revere and look to learn from. But if you’re looking to start your journey with Ishiguro, I would recommend not starting with The Buried Giant. #theburiedgiant #kazuoishiguro #ishiguro #literature #nobelprizewinner

An image of theoretical physicist Peter Higgs whom we lost earlier this month …..he was an alumni of Cotham School (the Alma mater of Ellie ,Josh ,Abbie and Markus). In 1964 Professor Higgs predicted the existence of the Higgs boson (aka the God Particle). The Higgs boson is a fundamental particle associated with the the Higgs field which provides mass to other fundamental particles. It also provides a greater understanding of the universe. Four decades on , experiments at CERN , proved the existence of the Higgs boson. Peter Higgs received the Nobel Prize for physics in 2013 (to make him even more of a hero , he turned down a knighthood on principle). A beautiful story of an old man who goes out to fish. He goes alone because his friend, the boy, isn't allowed to go with him as the old man is considered unlucky. After a lengthy search, the old man catches the biggest fish of his life, only for sharks to surround him... I think this book is just lovely. I am well aware there are loads of clever and meaningful things you could find buried amongst it's pages, but reading it at face value is so very rewarding, you really don't need to put in too much effort to get an awful lot out. Just one TW, which is that inevitably fishing involves a bit of butchery. I like to start reading a new book without any idea what to expect, like dive in completely clueless. Most of the time I don't even read descriptions, and oh my I always witness the unexpected 🫠 This one is such a captivating story. A haunting and thought-provoking narrative of identity, mortality, and love. The story is set in a boarding school called Hailsham, where children grow and indulge in normal schoolwork. They are completely unaware of what lies ahead in their lives- and the dark, disturbing secret on which the walls of Hailsham are built. It is a story of three friends who navigate their lives after uncovering the truth of their existence. Their emotions, love, friendship, and sacrifices linger in your mind even after the book ends. It sprouts a weird emotion that you love and hate at the same time. It was as if I had read it before somehow and at the same time, it's completely new. Weirdly familiar and chilling! The masterful exploration of what it is to be a human and the sacrifices we make for love makes it an unforgettable read!! **Spoiler alert** It is set in a dystopian world where human clones are created for organ donation.
